Spring Practice Presser

Here are some of the highlights from Mack Brown's Thursday afternoon press conference to kick off spring practice (Note: Hookem will have more from the media availability later):

Mack said he feels like the program is heading in the right direction. "I feel like it's the best offseason program we've had in the last four years."

He touched on the strength and conditioning staff, saying Bennie Wylie and Jeff Madden being on the same page are the reasons why the offseason has been good.

Another reason he believes they're due for a more successful 2013 season is because the team as a whole is older, faster, stronger team than the last two years.

Mack thinks they'll be good, but he said the team knows where they have to go to get to where they want to be.

Mack said 25-30 prospects will be on campus for this weekend's junior day.

---

A lot has been made of the player development personnel in recent weeks. Mack said they're still looking into it.

Texas is posting a Director of Player Personnel position today. That job will be to oversee recruiting.

---

Linebacker Demarco Cobbs is out for the spring with a knee injury. Trey Hopkins, Deoundrei Davis and Will Russ (back) are also out.

Camrhon Hughes will be limited.

Jackson Jeffcoat is likely to be held out of contact this spring.

---

With Major Applewhite taking the reins of the offense, they want to be spread up-tempo but still want to be balanced.

They want to run fewer formations, fewer substitutions.

Mack believes they can go back to the tempo easily. He feels the added dimension is now Texas has an element of the power running game.

In hopes of making the transition easier the Horns have tried to make their offseason workouts as up tempo as possible.

Mack said the second half of the Oregon State game is who they want to be offensively in terms of tempo.

---

Of the young linebackers, an obvious area needing an upgrade after 2012, Mack loved what Peter Jinkens did at the end of last year. Dalton Santos is down to 235.

Junior Jordan Hicks will be at outside linebacker this spring. They like Santos and Steve Edmond in the middle.

---

Mack said the DoPP position needs to be "the best recruiting coordinator in the country."

He also said the DoPP also needs to be savvy in social media and understand what it'll take to get the message out there.

---

On tackling, Mack felt the defense tackled better in the second half of last season.

He feels Adrian Phillips wasn't ready to play when they threw him in there. He said the defense being older, in better shape and more confident will help.

On that note, Mack said the common thought that Texas isn't physical in practice is a myth.

---

Mack said Stacy Searels has done a great job with what he had and he's pumped with what he's got going forward.

He said Searels had chances to leave but didn't.

---

The fact that Texas is more physical, older and more talented with the ability to use more combinations will make the line better.

He said the spread makes it easier to run the ball and wear people out. That will allow Texas to be better in short yardage and goal line.

---

Jake Raulerson will start out at center.

---

Mack said the TCU game is on the coaches more than it was on David Ash for playing him after he got injured against Iowa State.

Ash is the clear-cut starting quarterback having won 10 of his last 13 games.

Vince Young, who's on campus this semester taking classes, has helped Ash this offseason with his leadership skills.
