No problem Sir, hopefully you'll enjoy it. Another good movie I liked is "Taking Chance" with Kevin bacon. Not as much war as drama but good none the less IMO.

I was ten when my father took me to see The Longest Day. It was one of the very few times he and I went to the movies together. I knew that he had been there on D Day, but knew none of the details since he didn't talk about it. After the movie, he told me, "Son, that was just Hollywood's version of what happened." Then he told me his story of June 6, 1941. He was an MP and his company was the first MP unit to come ashore on Omaha Beach. Their mission was to take charge of any German prisoners the infantry captured, to free up the infantry to keep moving forward.

The English Channel was extremely rough after some bad storms had rolled through the day before. Riding in the landing craft caused everyone to get sick and puke their guts out. The floor of the boat got so slick with vomit that once the front gate lowered and they had to disembark, it was very hard not to slip and fall on your way out. Plus, just at that moment, a German shell made a direct hit on the landing craft next to theirs, so body parts of other MPs were raining down on them as they waded ashore.

Dad got his first Purple Heart that day, after shrapnel hit just above his collarbone soon after reaching the beach.

Years later, when walking out of the theater from watching Saving Private Ryan, I thought to myself that this was much closer to what Dad described. I really had a good cry thinking about how I wished my Dad could've seen that movie with me.

I as a active duty soldier have a lot of respect for men like your father that landed on normandy beach. I always try my best to give thanks to those that served before us and helped give us the freedom that we have now. Men such as your dad deserve as many handshakes and thanks as I can give. That being said I love Saving PRivate Ryan for the way they showed the war, it's not easy, it's not glorious is nasty and should be shown that way.

Its not just that he gets shanked. Its that he gets shanked by the guy they were going to shoot back in the field but Upham talked them out of it and they let him go.

Your right but how can he as a man just sit there and let another man die when he has the power to save a fellow sm life. Put a round in that douche and call it a day.

Actually, that was a different German. The one who was going to be shot earlier was killed later by Upham, but he wasn't the one in the life or death struggle upstairs when Upham froze on the stairs. One of the things I like best about that movie is that it portrayed heroism and cowardice in the most realistic fashion of any war movie ever made. They are shown as two sides of the same coin and that one man can be either a hero or a coward at any given moment of extreme stress. Everyone has their breaking point, yet nobody is beyond redemption given the right circumstances.

When I was in Vietnam, I served under a Colonel who had been awarded the Medal of Honor in the Korean War. One day, we had a very frank discussion on the topic of heroism and cowardice. He told me that no man has ever been been born who cannot be either a hero or a coward at any given time and that pure chance is often the deciding factor. That conversation came back to me vividly while watching Saving Private Ryan.

By the way, a movie was made about Colonel Millet's actions in Korea. His role was played by Gregory Peck, who became his lifelong friend afterwards. The movie was Pork Chop Hill. He was a Captain at the time of the battle. He led his company on the last bayonet charge in US Army history after they ran out of ammo part way up a hill defended by a large Chinese force.
