Mark Cuban on Jobs

  • Say whatever you want about Mark Cuban, he is someone who I have the utmost respect for from a business perspective.
His blog is a must read for me (wish he posted more).
He just came out with a great summary on where we stand with employment.
I work in the digital world in intelligence so I completely understand what he is saying.

  • Lot of truth there. Education means a lot in today's job market as long as you don't major in psychology or sociology or any of the the other liberal arts degrees. But Cuban as usual leaves out a significant portion of the economy. Skilled laborers. Electrician; plumber, carpenters, mechanics, cooks. Your can't replace a toilet on the internet. You can't fix a car on the internet. We're wasting a tremendous amount of money sending kids to school to be sociologists. We need mathematicians and engineers. But we also need skilled laborers. There actually is a reason that we have the illegal immigration problem we have today. A significant portion of the skilledcarpenters in this country are illegals.

At a young age they are like ok you are going to trade school if you aren't going to be x, y or z.

  • I know the company I work for, we have a high turnover of inspectors. They do oil/gas component inspections. These jobs can make people 6 figures consistently. I would say it's a brick and mortar job.

gordosan is right. Skilled laborers are vital, and they are a reduced class. Which is why a lot of them are now making comparable salaries to the digital world.
