Houston Astros

The common thought is that the Astros signed 3 guys with Top 10-15 talent. By taking Correa 1st overall we saved enough money to sign McCullers and Ruiz. The club signed 19 of its top 20 picks, I think, and that is how the system is restocked. It will be a few years before we know if it pans out, but I read maybe 4 or 5 baseball sites that track the draft and minor leagues....all said we nailed it.

Here's what Keith Law said the night after Round 1, before he knew the Astros would also draft/sign Ruiz.

"The picks: Carlos Correa at No. 1, Lance McCullers Jr. at No. 41
Summary: Pre-draft deals are illegal in baseball under Rule 3 -- the team could lose not just the player but the pick, as well as the bonus pool money assigned to it -- but if Correa were to agree now to a deal below the assigned value for the first overall pick ($7.2 million), the Astros could spread the savings over subsequent selections, possibly giving most or all of that to sandwich-round pick Lance McCullers, Jr., a first-round talent with a strong commitment to Florida. It's a risk for Houston, but the payoff could be huge; if you believe McCullers, a 6-foot right-hander who reworked his delivery last winter so he could throw strikes, can be a starter, you could make a credible argument two of the top 10-15 players in this draft are now under the Astros' control."

  • Here's what Law said a couple of days later:

"I love this draft. They’ll likely sign first overall pick Carlos Correa (1) for well less than the $7.2 million assigned value — I’m expecting something around $4.5 million — and spread the money to high-upside prep pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. (1A) and sweet-swinging third baseman Rio Ruiz (4). Shortstop Nolan Fontana (2) stays at the position with great instincts, an average but accurate arm and a great eye at the plate.

Brady Rodgers (3) has plus command, and will work with three and possibly four pitches, although his fastball will likely sit at fringe-average. Brett Phillips (6) can run, throw and play the outfield, and has played linebacker in his spare time. With a solid swing, he seems like an outstanding value in that spot. Preston Tucker (7) is a good senior sign with some pull power but probably not enough offense overall to profile as more than a bench guy."

  • Here's Jim Callis on signing those top talents:

"The Astros have agreed to terms with fourth-round pick Rio Ruiz on a $1.85 million bonus.

That's the biggest bonus compared to assigned pick value thus far in the 2012 draft, coming in at $1,489,800 over the $360,200 allocated for the 129th overall pick. Ruiz beats the standard set by fellow Astros draftee Lance McCullers Jr., who signed for $2.5 million as the 41st overall pick.

Ruiz had a chance to go in the first round before missing most of his senior season following surgery to remove a blood clot in his neck in March. The Bishop Amat HS (La Puente, Calif.) star projects as a third baseman with an average bat, plus raw power and a strong arm. He had committed to Southern California.

Ruiz's signing effectively ends any chance Houston has of landing 11th-rounder Hunter Virant, a California high school lefty who dropped because of a seven-figure price tag. The Astros still should be able to sign their three College World Series participants in the first 10 rounds (Florida shortstop Nolan Fontana and outfielder Preston Tucker, UCLA catcher Tyler Heineman) without blowing past their bonus pool of $11,177,700 by 5 percent. If they did exceed their pool by that much, it would cost them a first-round pick next year."

  • And here's part of a chat transcript with Jim Callis in which he says the Astros might have had the best draft of any team this year:

"Jason (Oklahoma): Do you think the Astros had the best draft?

Jim Callis: They certainly might have. Carlos Correa could be Troy Tulowitzki, and they got one of the best arms at the draft at No. 40 in Lance McCullers Jr. It they can sign their toughest signs (Rio Ruiz, Brett Phillips, Hunter Virant) in the later rounds—and it looks like they'll have the money to do so—this could be the best 2012 draft crop.

Jim (Munster, IN): Who was the steal of the draft between rounds 1a-2?

Jim Callis: Lance McCullers Jr. (Astros at 41) in the sandwich round, Tanner Rahier (Reds at 78) in the second round.

Jay (California): Is Correa already the Astros top prospect? Is it even close?

Jim Callis: Well, they have to sign him first. But I'd take him over Jonathan Singleton, Jarred Cosart and Co.

@Jaypers413 (IL): Odds of the Astros signing Virant, Hinojosa and Traver?

Jim Callis: I think they'll get at most one of those three, probably Virant. Don't think Hinojosa is signable and Traver probably isn't either.

Kyle (Dallas): Where can I expect Correa to be assigned? I really want to see him play.

Jim Callis: Back now ... I would assume Rookie-level Greeneville or the GCL. Probably signs very soon, too.

Mike (Orlando): Several interesting strategies this year, can you explain the Astros plan for signing Hunter Virant?

Jim Callis: Sure. I think by the time they sign Correa and McCullers, they'll have saved roughly $1 million vs. pick value. They might be able to take some discounts in rounds 2, 3 and 5, plus they can save maybe $500,000 with their senior signs in rounds 7-10. That could give them an extra $1.7 million or so to play with as they pursue Rio Ruiz and Virant.

Tim Ednoff (Irvine): Hey Jim, With Correa going 1-1, how does he compare to another high draftee in SS Manny Machado? Seems like both have fluid infield actions, questions about how big the body will get, and the bat to profile at third if a move is necessary.

Jim Callis: Extremely similar profiles. Correa might even have a better chance to stick at shortstop. I keep getting Troy Tulowitzki comps on Correa, with some A-Rod thrown in.

Paul (PA): In the sandwich round, which name sticks out to you as having the most potential?

Jim Callis: Lance McCullers Jr. and Matt Smoral have the most upside.

Greg (Oh): Which 1st rd player will get lowest, highest bonus?

Jim Callis: Highest will be Correa or Buxton. Lowest will be Ramsey. Those are just guesses, but I believe I'll be right.

Mike (Tampa): What was the real reason for McCullers fall to the supplemental round? Signability or concerns over whether or not he can remain a starter? Do the Astros truly feel they will be able to come to terms with him?

Jim Callis: Signability. The Astros will get him done. They can sign him and Correa and be roughly $1 million below the bonus pool for those two picks.

Adam B. (Cincinnati, OH): Appel, Correa, Buxton...any of them rank in top 5 in last year's draft?

Jim Callis: Buxton or Correa might have gone ahead of Starling or a banged-up Rendon. Doubt they would have gone ahead of the pitchers taken in the top four (Cole, Hultzen, Bauer, Bundy)."

  • Wandy to the Pirates for 2 former UT signees (Colton Cain and Robbie Grossman)! If Grossman develops this is a total steal.

Great job by Jeff Luhnow and Jim Crane in unloading every dude on the roster that was scheduled to make big money next season. The rebuilding has begun in earnest. They signed their top draft choices, unloaded unproductive guys with big contracts and are seeing what the youth can do. The MLB product will stink on the field for a bit, but this is the way to properly rebuild.

Beat me to it on the 2 former UT signees, but reading up on Grossman makes me think that it's very possible that Houston may have indeed gotten a steal. Just hope he develops. Cain has a hard 94 mph fastball for a lefty so maybe with some more seasoning, he could be a contributor as well.

I love what the Astros are doing. I believe they're constructing a great organization. I also think they may be back in contention a lot more quickly than some people think. That's the hard part.

There's no timetable on young players, and if you don't believe me, check with the A's. Remember, they were supposed to be lousy this season.

Oakland general manager Billy Beane looked at his club last offseason and reached the difficult conclusion that it wasn't good enough to hang with the Rangers and Angels in the American League West.

Instead of selling a silly company line about maybe being competitive if this or that happened, Beane had the guts to do what only the really good ones do. He traded three All-Star pitchers for a bunch of prospects and turned his Spring Training into a tryout camp for the talent he'd collected.

He loved what he saw. He didn't know how quickly the A's would be good again, but he committed to running those young players out there and putting them in the right kind of environment.

He knew that some of them would be good immediately, he knew that some of them might need another year or two in the Minor Leagues and he knew that some of them wouldn't make it.

Regardless of how this season -- or even next -- was to turn out, Beane was committed to his plan, to putting a foundation in place that would sustain the A's for years to come.

Now the A's are one of baseball's surprise teams, with all those kids forming a terrific pitching staff, and young outfielders Josh Reddick and Yoenis Cespedes seemingly on their way to stardom. If Beane had played it safe last winter, he never would have found out about Tom Milone and Jarrod Parker and Ryan Cook...............continue reading

  • Astros trade Chris Johnson to Arizona...................this franchise is becoming a laughing stock of professional sports. If you play well they trade you or send you to AAA (Wallace is an example)

The Diamondbacks have acquired third baseman Chris Johnson from the Astros for minor league outfielders Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering, the teams announced. Borchering, 21, was Arizona's first round pick in the 2009 draft while Krauss, 24, was taken in the second round of the same draft.

They traded a crappy big leaguer for prospects in the middle of a rebuilding project with new ownership. They are indeed the laughing stock of baseball, but this is exactly what they are supposed to be doing. Not sure how anyone can complain about all of their moves this year....

Crappy big league prospect..............methinks you haven't watched CJ this year. Johnson had a disappointing year last year but he has played very well this year. Yes they've made some moves but you (nor I) know if they are going to pan out. Some of the young players and drafted have good resumes. I know this the 2 "moves" pitching in the bullpen have been terrible. Plus the move to the AL is still on this ownership's watch.............I some posters here love to defend uncle drayton and Crane (not saying you are defending drayton) but the record is what you say you are not what you wish it was.

  • Pay attention, class.

The franchise is not BECOMING a laughing stock. It is ALREADY a laughing stock. These trades are the steps toward regaining legitimacy, and hopefully sustainable legitimacy.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/houston-finds-value-in-return-for-replaceable-part/

"Jeff Luhnow is at it again....The approach being utilized by Houston is an excellent one. The organization does not have highly-sought-after commodities to trade (Carlos Lee, Brandon Lyon, Wandy Rodriguez, Johnson) so they’re seeking former highly-regarded prospects that have fallen in value but remain promising...

The Houston Astros organization had an outstanding run of contention from 1994 to 2006 and it’s going to be a few ugly years in Texas. But the good news is that Luhnow and his front office crew, along with new owner Jim Crane, are trying to build a team that will have sustainable success for another long stretch of time. The organization was picked over and left for the buzzards when previous owner Drayton McLane Jr. entrusted the organization to former General Manager Ed Wade who neglected the minor league system and thumbed his nose at the amateur draft."

  • The Astros snap their 12 game losing streak by winning 9-4 vs the Bucs..............Harrell is going to be a stud..........will get some votes for rookie of the year. So 35th this is a good move by Crane's group that is paying off..........he was claimed off the wavier wire in July of 2011. (even though Crane was not the owner officially his people were calling the shots most of the year while waiting MLB approval)

I would agree with you if we were talking about last year. But this year he has shown maturity and more patience at the plate. (especially the last month) Is he an all-star.........no but I could see him as a building block batting in the 6th hole. Plus he is good in the clubhouse. Also he takes coaching..............unusual in today's pro athletes.

CJ is the definition of a league average player whose stats are aided by an unsustainable BABIP of .360. His walk rate has barely improved. His wRC+ is barely above average at 107. His WAR is only at 0.5. His OPS+ in only at 105. His fielding stinks. Trading him allows Brett Wallace to get recalled and play every day.

There was no reason to keep CJ. He is a building block on the worst team in the majors, not a building block towards a bright future.
