Houston Astros

  • I have to admit when the season started the Astros would be worse than last year and might rival the 1962 NY Mets as the worst team in MLB history. A month into the season the 'Stros are 12-14 with a 4 game winning streak. The young players (Martinez especially) look like they belong...............BTW Martinez is an RBI machine with a great approach at the plate. CJ looks like he did at the end of 2010, Jed Lowery plays a solid SS with excellent at bats, Bogusevic while not hitting for a high average now hits the ball hard and is patient at the plate. The last few years if an opposing pitcher threw 80 pitches by the 8th inning it was a shock because the Astros were not patient at the plate.........this year is very different.

The pitching is solid and the team seems to be in every game............

  • I live about a mile from the Juice Box and still haven't been to a game yet (I'm a Cubs fan). I'll be going to a few games here in about 2 weeks when they play the Rangers and Cubs. Hopefully they have the roof back.

Well, I hate the Cubs....always have, always will.................They are the same as agroids in my sight!!!! Seriously though, I lived on Lake Houston for 38 years and although I have moved into Ranger territory, I still watch the Astros every day.
I had much rather watch the young guys that they are putting on the field with a chance that they will get better(and they will), than watch a bunch of over the hill has-beens that are stuck on the field to boast attendance.
Just like the young Horns have emerged and will become a force in the Big 12 this year, the Astros are finally truly committed to the young talent that they are starting to assemble.

  • The Astros are being held back by the incompetence of Brad Mills. A real manager would have them a game out of 1st.

You can't forget about Jose Altuve. Hes hitting .360. Playing like an Allstar.

Yep. Too true. Team OPS is better than average and the division remains mediocre. It's not a team that's likely to stick around until September but a fantastic start for the franchise.

I wonder about Altuve..............OBP is terrible for his career (has been a bit better this year) for a player 5'5" he should have an OBP of 40+. In addition while his speed is good his overall quickness is not real good. He doesn't get to balls really good 2nd get to often enough to be a top notch 2nd baseman.

U mean his 1 year career when he was 20 years old? Come on, the guy is the second youngest player in the majors. His career minor league average was well over .300. He's had a lot more walks this year than last year. Give the guy a chance. As far as his speed, check out his sb totals. If ur drinking the haterade, u r not giving the guy a chance.

Look at his career in the minors. I know from experience one of the toughest things to teach a player (if he doesn't learn it at an early age) is the strike zone and patience at the plate. Think about a former Longhorn with a tremendous ability/athlete...........Drew Stubbs. He leads MLB in strikeout % because he can't take a pitcher deep into a count. We hope Altuve can make the change at the plate but the odds are against him. Look at what I said about his speed and HIS QUICKNESS.............2 different things. Plus never said I hated anybody read the post again.

  • I still think the smart money says the Astros are more likely to cool off significantly and finish in dead last.

Cool to see them fighting to this point, though, something we haven't seen from an Astros team in a while.

  • I continue to be impressed with this young Astros team. They are 2 games below .500 in a weak Central Division (just 4 games out of first). The team ERA in May is the best in baseball at 2.67 (through last night).

Brad Mills consistent bungling is holding this team back.

I haven't watched closely enough to have an opinion on Mills, would you mind sharing what his shortcomings have been as a manager?

    Thanks in advance.

From my point of view it is impossible to judge if Mills is good or bad. He worked for a bad GM and Owner his first year.....................I judge a MLB manager on 2 primary things:

    1) Does he relate well to the players and does he keep the locker room lose.

    2) How does he handle the bull pen. There is an old saying........."show me a good bull pen and I will show you a good manager" The manager is as good as good as his last pitching change.

And how has Mills handled both points?

I think this year well.................hell we need to remember people were saying at the beginning of the year this was the worst team in baseball. We might still lose 100 but for me right now with a stable ownership and GM situation he would be a candidate for Manager of the year.........IMHO.

Being specific he relates very well with the clubhouse.........I think it helps that he has a son in pro baseball about the age of the majority of the current Astros roster. The bullpen has perform well (so has the entire pitching staff)...........

  • This recent series with the Dodgers shows how bad a manager he is.

Game 1: Pulls his starting pitcher, who was cruising and pitching a shutout, instead uses almost his entire bullpen.
Game 2: Uses the same bullpen pitchers from the previous night who were highly ineffective, issues an IBB to one of the worst batters in the Dodgers lineup, and then refuses to use his best relief pitcher with the game on the line.
Game 3: Puts out a shitty lineup to start, and again issues an IBB to same batter from the previous night. Since he already burned through Lopez and Wright the previous 2 games, they are no longer available so he goes with the absolutely shitty Del Rosorrio.

Under his tenure of mismanagement Astros starting pitchers have thrown 2 CG.

He's over his head as the man calling the shots. He'll be gone next year though.
