Dwight Howard a Houston Rocket?

  • This from AAS 9 Things and 1 Prediction on Monday:

    10. One crazy prediction: Dwight Howard, a close buddy of Hakeem Olajuwon's, will become a Houston Rocket.

  • Heard on the radio they have to get the 5th and 8th picks 1st........or something similar, to make it happen. The 14th and 16th picks aren't going to cut it.

    HoopsCoach

  • Morey is doing everything in his power to get him. The interesting part is his willingness to take Howard without signing him to an extention, so even if he gets him he could be one and done. Guess it's their best shot at getting a superstar becasue they never draft high enough or seem to be able to convince the big-time FA's to sign with them. Going to another year of drama from Howard regardless.

  • And isn't he coming off back surgery? Kind of risky, but I like the idea because it gives them a chance at a superstar and even if he leaves it doesn't matter.

The rockets either need a superstar or they need to suck bad enough to get a high draft choice and hope that player becomes a superstar. This move would guarantee one or the other.

    HoopsCoach

  • As a Rockets fan, this would be awesome! but extremely unlikely.

  • The rumor is basically as follows:

-Trade Lowry to Toronto for the 8th pick.
-Trade the 14th and 16th picks, plus cash or player, to Sacramento for the 5th pick.
-Package the 5th and 8th to Orlando for Howard. (Rumored Orlando would take Drummond with 5th pick).
-Pray like hell Howard can be convinced to re-sign in Houston.

I'm all for it. The current roster is obviously not going to win a championship or compete for much more than the bottom rung of the playoffs.

  • I'd be all for getting Howard and then not resigning him. They're never going to be worth a damn without getting high draft picks and making the most of them. It's gotten old watching this franchise just keep itself afloat, and that is reflected in their numbers and the public's lack of enthusiasm for them.

I agree that renting Howard and not re-signing him is a fine option also. Anything but this current mediocrity.

  • We traded Budinger to the T-Wolves for the 18th pick this morning. We now have 14, 16, and 18.

    Something definitely is brewing.

Right on. Thanks for mentioning that as I had not seen that. Morey has assembled chips. How will he play them? Hopefully he won't trade Richard Jeffson, Jason Collins and Brandon Armstrong for Eddie Freaking Griffin.

  • Some new Rockets rumors....

@MarkStein - ESPN says Josh Smith could be Rockets Plan B. Sounds more like ammo for Plan A. Dwight, Josh BFFs since preschool.

    I like that idea.

@Draftexpress - Sources say Houston has an offer of Lowry, the #14 and #16 picks for Tyreke Evans and the #5 pick on the table. Up to Sacramento to decide.

    I dislike that idea.

Almost 100% positive Tyreke Evans would be a chip in another deal.

  • Is Deron WIlliams still considered a "superstar"? I know he recently said that his two choices in FA are the Mavs and Nets but I wonder if the Rockets land Howard that would change his mind. I know he played HS ball around Dallas but Houston is still pretty close to home.

what's your hesitation with Tyreke Evans? Off court stuff?

I don't know if he's considered one, but he certainly plays like one.

What position does he play? He's not really a PG and his outside shooting isn't really what you need from a 2. Need better 25% from 3 pt range.

Hopefully, it's to package and trade.

He doesn't shoot well. He doesn't assist well. He's not an efficient player. I'm not really sure what he does really well. He's a decent player, but he's not someone around whom I'd choose to build a franchise. He's been a league average PG thus far.

sorry...accidently downvoted you...could someone fix that...

what I was trying to say was that T. Evans was definitely a downgrade from Doran

So what's the point of it then? Do you think Houston wins the championship with him this season? It's not like you get compensation picks for losing free agents.

I will take anything, literally ANYTHING, besides being the best team not in the playoffs for three straight years. If that means a complete rebuild and terrible teams, then we get better draft picks. All it takes is one high draft pick to turn a team around, and you will not find that at 14.

If you are going to get him then you MUST try to resign him. If you have no intention of signing him you are better off keeping the 5th and 8th picks (assuming we can get them) and build from there.

The main point is change. Keeping the same roster isn't going to improve the team, which has had the 14th pick (just outside of the lottery) in 3 drafts in a row now. Something needs to change. Go big or go home. If we get Howard for just 1 season and then he leaves, well that leaves money to play with. Or maybe the Rockets suck the next season and get a Top 4 or 5 pick to build around. I don't know, but sitting around with the current roster isn't a quick path to anywhere but the middle.

I am ok with either of your thoughts. Try hard to resign the guy or just build with the 5th and 8th picks. Works for me. Middling around as the 20th best team in the league on a yearly basis just kind of sucks.
