A Scary Thought

  • “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years…Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.” - attributed to Alexander Fraser Tytler

  • That quote started making the rounds during the 2000 elections. Tytler actually didn't pen it; though it did reflect his poor opinion of democracy. This is closer to being a quote, " A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. " He's probably correct.

Speaking if which, why is Homeland Security buying a billion rounds of ammunition. I saw that on the news last night. Don't know if its true; but it strikes me as very strange if it is. Even the social security department has purchased 200,000 rounds of hollow points. The nature of audits looks like its going to change.

  • one only needs to look at the history of former world "superpowers" to know that they all live on borrowed time. At some point, due to sheer greed, stupidity or apathy they fall or morph into something else. Probably won't happen in my lifetime given I am halfway through it but it will likely happen.

Roman Republic--509 BC to 27 BC. Preceded by Roman Monarchy and succeeded by Roman Imperialism.

We may not be good but we still have a few years left

The Grecchi Brothers were the example of early welfare. My 9th grade history teacher taught me that politicans use the masses to maintain power (and wealth) by giving free grain and staging big events like "the eating of the Christians" in the coliseum.
