talked to a friend tonight: the defense update

  • * buzz, buzz, buzz. this defense is the best unit Will has coached in college football in terms of speed and attitude, especially IF a few young players are ready. Every group (the DL, LBers and DBs) are superior groups. No weakness to hide. He's never had that scenario as a DC. Feels as though they can take lots of chances this year and play more aggressive without giving up much. Says Wilson and Jeffcoat will have more than surpassed expectations. When you look back at the great UT DEs over the MB era (Redding, Orakpo, Crowder) these kids are far more ready coming in. Not even in the same ballpark. Never see an entire defensive freshman class this ready.

    * no worries at DT. "feel as comfortable as you can expect with this many new players. Higgins has a chance to be great." Loves Ashton Dorsey ability to fight through his freshman issues and has really come on.

    * LBer group are weapons. That hasn't always been the case here people need to fear this group. Hicks hasn't let down the entire camp and will play ALOT. Special talent there. Jackson isn't ready for primetime just yet because he's been nicked up. Talent is there and he sure as hell is a football player. May redshirt. Benson will play this year. No doubt.

*secondary. Nothing else to say. Absolutely loves Carrington Byndom. Future star.

Says Scott might have the edge and most likely is your starter at the other S spot. Just been more consistent.

asked again about the backup QB spot and he says that Conner might just be more ready physically right now at this stage. Expects him to be the guy when it's all said and done.

I went a little too far with the info this time guys (simply because practices have been closed and info is all over the place). But i thought i would share nonetheless.

  • Appreciate the info EM.

  • Thanks for posting.

The comment about Wood's ability to take the hits and be physically ready is a definite difference between the two back-ups. Mack's presser today should give us even more insighton the QBs.

  • Thanks el mahico. Much appreciated.

My thought on this class defensively have always been they got some really, really smart kids in it. Jeffcoat, Hicks and Byndom come to mind as guys that are very mature thinkers in football terms. Guys that are easy, for freshmen, to trust on the field.

If Dorsey also proves to be in that category, more of a bonus.

  • Great report. The D is going to have to help this team out of a jam here and there while the O grows up.

  • The most important thing about this freshmen D class, they show up to practice every day.

  • "No worries at DT."

    Love the sound of that.

Now I'd like to hear - No worries on the Offensive Line.

  • Great info Mahico !!! when muschamp was at LSU , he played Freshman, right from the bat, LeRon Landry, That DT that went to Kansas, all his future 1rst rd picks.

I got to go to several of LSU games , my brotherlaw had box seats for his company, I was more focused on Saban , had no clue who Muschamp was at the time. Saban sure would tear into his players......big offensive lineman, or dB's , it didnt matter.....

Best news out of all this is Carrington Byndom....sounds like he is a mini Earl Thomas. Coming from that Lufkin, East Texas/ SEast Texas / Golden Triangle area....those boys are usually well coached, and can play immediately. must be in the water

  • MAKES you wonder, if a skinny Orakapo could become an NFL super STAR.....,

If JEFFCOAT is as polished and crisp in technique as they say, what if by his 3 or 4th year, he becomes as strong as Orakapo.

What if WILSON as strong and raw and tenacious that he is, learns the technique that JEFFCOAT HAS

Almost Scary to think we could quite possibly have two monster DE's , Top 10 draftpics on the same team....

What Jeffcoat lacks, Wilson has, and What Jeffcoat has Wilson Needs. Sounds like a perfect marriage for both to learn from each others present weakneses and push each other.

  • Thanks EM! What is really amazing is that the 2010 class reminds me of the 2002 class (VY's class) and it appears 2011 may be even BETTER. It is amazing what type of talent we have coming in. I am so pumped to see this team play!

    Thanks for the info.

  • Just wanted to state the simple fact that I heart el mahico's "friends". This kind of insider info is what this board will make it's name on, and will bring the burnt orange faithful here in droves.

Thanks a ton for the info, bud.
