latest practice reports

  • I read some other practice reports that state that the offense is starting to win a lot more vs the defense than in the past and that ash is looking real good post scrimmage, is this true?

    houhorn

  • The offense is much more competitive this fall than they were a year ago against the Texas D.

But, to be clear, the Horns D has won the vast majority of team drills.

  • Bobby what time is the scrimmage tomorrow?

  • I feel like our defense is actually better than it was a year ago at this time, so that's pretty positive to hear.

  • Both offense and defense know their scheme so it's just fine tuning. This offense is going to surprise a lot of folks.

Agree. They are probably better than they were vs Cal.

I've read the same thing (Jesus).

During the summer 7 on 7's the defense started out dominating but towards the end the offense was breaking even with them.

Now I'm reading that the offense is catching up to the D in Fall drills as well.

I consider this to be good news.

Correct. Mack can always change it one way or the other by 30 minutes to an hour.

The offense is behind the defense. There's no harm in saying that. But the O has improved.

i love the burnt orange Kool-Aid as much as anyone, but I think it is time to tap the breaks. Cal game was one of the most dominating performances I have seen in a bowl game. I seriously doubt that Texas is at that level in August. 2/3rds of the LBs are going to be starting for the first time. Nobody is quite sure how healthy Jeffcoat is currently. I think the defense can surpass where they ended the yr last yr, but I have a feeling it will take some time

Perhaps you are over valuing Cal's offense?

Jeffcoat is more effective now than he was against Cal considering he was playing with a torn pec. As for the other new starters on defense, the 2 Lb's have the talent & should have the necessary experience by the time we reach the meat of our schedule to be more than adequate replacements for the departed players. Phillips is an upgrade over Gideon imho due to better speed.

  • The starters that we lost have been replaced by more talented and capable players. Edmond will be an improvement over Acho and the general gaining of experience throughout the defense as a whole will help considerably.

Cal's offense had, by far, its worst day all year against Texas. They had over 300 yards of total offense against every other opponent and over 400 yards of offense against 5 of their Pac12 conference games.

Against Texas, Cal had a total of 195 yards of offense. That was, for the most part, a pretty decent Cal offense that Texas' defense snuffed out.

I agree in spirit here. The talent is certainly there to be better at every spot. I love Philips. I think he will be a playmaker that the defense has lacked. I think he leds the Horns in INTs. I also think people are confusing potential and production. Potential gets coaches fired. Production wins. Acho and Robinson were extremely productive players and both were drafted. I seriously doubt Cobb or Edmond can match them right from the start. I think expecting that is unfair to Cobb and Edmond. Remember Hicks had some head scratching moments as he adjusted to his first season (OSU?). Cobb and Edmond have an advantage as this is the 2nd year in Manny's defense, but there will be a few road bumps on their way to realizing their potential. Remember Cobbs has been banged up a lot and missed a lot of time over the last 12 months. I expect the defense to be as good as the one we all saw against Cal, I just think there will be a learning curve

Sess, I'm not knocking our defense vs Cal. It was really good. My point was that I believe we have a better D now than then. More depth, more experience and a year in Diaz system.
