kids would love to play for John Gruden

  • I don't doubt that Nick would listen. However, I think he'd listen just to drive up his salary. His legacy wouldn't be that much greater by winning titles at Texas vs. Alabama. At some point, once you've won more than 1 title (and he has 3), your status as a college football coaching deity is pretty much cemented.

Oh, and John Gruden is a terrible choice. Horrible.

I know Texas can spend more money than Bama on a head coach. But you are right when you said winning is their bottom line. I think they are willing to spend more than Texas would be. They would match anything Texas throws out their in my uninformed opinion.

Bama could match any money for Saban. The key is to stroke Saban's ego of winning MNCs at three different schools. He would go down as one of the greatest coaches ever if he accomplished that. Also there were internet rumors (not sure if true) last year that Saban's wife is a socialite that would love to be in Austin.

I think it would do something for his legacy, both in his mind and realistically. Especially if is wins national titles here. Taking three different programs to national titles and winning would make him the greatest college coach of all time.

He would definitely listen to increase his salary anywhere for sure.

I'm not writing him off b/c of his nature. He doesn't strike me as a Mack/Paterno/Bowden type. He's reached the pinnacle at Bama twice and there's nothing left to accomplish there. I think he wants a challenge. I also think that he wants people to know he's the best college football coach of all time. If he came to Texas and won a national championship he'd be the only coach to accomplish that feat at 3 different schools.

To a lesser extent I think he'd like to get out of the SEC and if I was given the opportunity to spend my last days coaching in Tuscaloosa and the SEC or Austin and the Big 12 it'd be an easy decision.

  • I have to agree that Patterson is probably a no go after what happened to TCU this off-season. You don't get a job at Texas after 80% of your roster fails a drug test.

Briles would be a great hire but I worry about his age, 5 years younger than Mack.

I'm really warming up to Dan Mullen if Will can't be lured back.
