hope it's not to early to look forward...2013 Pipeline 1.0

  • Overall, after a very good win which could have gone very differently. I'm pretty hopeful for '13. Not undefeated hopeful, but 10 or 11 wins hopeful and a chance to compete for top spot.

    Consider what went right:
+ Team could have been derailed by off-field fiasco. They weren't.
+ Diaz' defense could have tuned him out and given up. They didn't.
+ Ash could have imploded after 2nd half interception. He didn't.
+ Applewhite/Brown could have panicked and tightened up after 20-10. They didn't.
+ Offense and Defense could have quit after 2 costly Special Teams disasters. They didn't.

    Still a ton of questions:

What position will Hopkins, Bergeron, Moore, Ridgeway, Cobbs, and Diggs play next year?

    Will Hicks be available?

Will Jeffcoat be healthy and available?

Will Byndom try to jump to NFL?

So the offseason could be pretty exciting, or not, depending on what we learn to these big issues for '13...

    Enjoy...

Equally excited over here... one question though.

Why do you think Byndom would consider going to the NFL? I don't even see that as a consideration after this year.

Do you know something that we don't?

  • Thanks for keeping this up to date, I realize it can be quite tedious. A few minor comments/corrections:
    - Alex de la Torre did not redshirt. He played in 7 games and is a backup FB (not MLB).
    - Geoff Swaim will be a junior, not a senior.
    - Jordan Hicks qualifies for a medical redshirt, so if he's on the team in 2013, then it would be as a junior.
    - DJ Grant, T Ashcraft, and K Kriegel all graduated and are unlikely to return for their final year of eligibility.
    - Will C McCrary or N Boyer be back next year (they have eligibility left)? If so, will they get a scholarship? Usually the walk-ons that get a schollie in the Fall are seniors, so it's just a one year deal, but since Cade will be a senior and Nate a junior, it's a different situation.
    - Trey Graham was never placed on a medical schollie and still counts against the 85. He has one year left (plus a hardship) although I doubt he plays, but he could try to be another Irby.

  • One interesting observation. We may have only 1, or perhaps zero true freshmen playing in 2013. Our cupboard is finally filled back up.

Also, I forecast we'll have as many as 9 players likely to get drafted somewhere for the next three consecutive seasons: '13-'15.

I think we may actually be in for a very strong 2-3 years.

As much as we all hoped for '12, a close look 2 years ago at the OL made it pretty clear we'd still have issues there this year.

  • I didn't think you could apply for a medical RS until you had exhausted your eligibility.

I'm not sure if I have the terminology correct, but a medical redshirt is what Sed Flowers received and what Hicks should be able to get. If you've lost 2 years to the same injury, then you can apply for a medical hardship after your 5 years are up, which is what Jordan Shipley received.

True - he's a senior next year. No medical hardship is guaranteed... although likely if he/we want it at the end of next year.

Assuming there is a next year for Hicks at all. I hope there is... hoping he is cleared of the charges (assuming they are BS) and focuses next year to live up to his potential.

  • Jinkens has to be a possible starter.

Think you should put Naashon in the DE cue.

Vacarro Pequeno should be a Safety IMO.

Erik Huhn should be in the OLB cue.

Antwuan Davis should be in the S cue.

If we don't land Billings, Darius James might see time at Center.

Think Perkins ends up at OG.

Yeah, well.. look at what we have at center. A four-five year underachiever and a smaller smart center that struggles at times. He wants to play DT, but Bobby and Gerry and the depth chart shows the staff will likely look at him on O-line first. Unless A'Shawn decommits or something I think it's safe to assume Searels will get a chance to work with him. If not, say hello to Darius James. We need a big BAMF center now and we don't have one. Billings and James are the likely candidates.

Why do you think Perkins is a guard? I'm hearing Right Tackle all the way.

Right tackle could possibly work. Doesn't look like a LT or OT but I'll readily admit my judgement of O-line talent and two quarters would still leave you short of a cup of coffee nowadays.

I really doubt that Billings starts on the OL. He was offered as a DT on or before his OV, and I had heard that he was told he would start as a DT if he chooses Texas. Mods, your thoughts?

Perkins is being called the most promising OT Texas has signed in years, I'll be surprised if he ends up at OG.

Medical Redshirt is a colloquial and inaccurate equivalent term to medical hardship. I have heard the "apply after 5 years are up" story many times, but it is not actually included in the bylaws that deal with the medical hardship.

14.2.4 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the confer-
ence or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of “hardship.” Hardship is defined as an
incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised:
    8/8/02, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)
    138139
    14
    (a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-
year or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year
    in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/1/01, 8/8/02)
    (b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that con-
cludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 14.2.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to com-
pete for the remainder of that playing season; (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01,
    4/3/02, 4/24/08)
    (c) In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three
contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is
greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only
scheduled or completed competition against outside participants during the playing season that concludes
with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season
in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the
number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of
scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Dates of competition
that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States.) from the maximum permissible
number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the
student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competi-
tion in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specifically identified as such in
the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are
not exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded
from the calculation only if they are identified as such by in the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season
    regulations; and (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 8/4/05,
    4/26/07, 9/18/07, 4/24/08)
    (d) In individual sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than
three dates of competition or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the maximum permissible number
of dates of competition as set forth in Bylaw 17 plus one date for a conference championship (e.g., gymnas-
tics: 13+1=14, wrestling: 16+1=17), regardless of whether the team participates in the conference champion-
ship, provided the institution is a member of a conference and the conference holds a championship event
in the applicable sport. Dates of competition that are exempted per Bylaw 17 (e.g., alumni contests, foreign
team in the United States) from the maximum permissible number of dates of competition

    DERRRRP

My apologies. Hopefully there's an equal amount of derp in my take on Perkins. I'd love to get a legit OT in this class. Lately I've been thinking it's the Cali JUCO or bust.

Honestly don't know what kind of crack I smoked last night. I've probably typed "queue" and used it properly over a hundred times. My subconscious hungover soul must be telling me it wants to plays some pool. I don't always go DERRP, but when I do I prefer to go ALL DERRRRP.
