had a chance to have a brief conversation

  • with someone close to the team.

    * the mood is not good, obviously. Haven't heard him this somber after a game, even after the title game last year. Said the concern and focus right now with a young team is to get them past this and ready for OU, said they are treating it the same way they did after 2007 KSU.

*biggest concern offensively is that they haven't done anything great and continue to make the same mistakes. Said the HMIC is beside himself right now and more than a little pissed. Lots of emotion today from players and coaches. Can't blame one area for the offensive issues. Upperclassmen players making freshmen mistakes. WRs running the wrong routes and not giving effort. linemen confused on who to block or getting too high. Said coaches didn't do their job this week preparing the players, especially on offense.

    * They never expected to be mostly a pro-style team this year, but certainly expected more success. Disappointed isn't the word. Used the term "shocked" more than once.

*said several young players stood up in the locker room after the game and got emotional. Not exactly players you would think would be ready to get up in front of the team like that and show emotion. That was probably the best part of what happened yesterday.

*said the running game is not even a work in progress anymore. They need to start over.

*said that he expects several changes to the depth chart if this is all we can expect. Nothing is promised. Mack made that his theme today.

Will try to get him again later this week but I doubt he will have time.

  • Thanks El Mahico. Your posts and contributions are appreciated.

This is when people dig deep and learn the most about themselves. Coaches, players, etc.

  • Thank you. Changes in teh depth chart are necessary, just wish we didn't have to see this first, to get there. Bototm line, is Monroe should have been playing more from game 1. GG should have been throwing it more and down field from game 1. Dead weight OL seniors should be on the pine. We need to be primarily 4 wide as our TEs are worthless to us. We need to coach much more aggressively. We need to coach with more exciting game plans to get the energy of the team up.

We play not to lose adn not to make mistakes. That is fine and good when you are the overwhelming favorite, like we were all last year. This team needs to go for it on 4rth and 2 from the +40. This team needs to take shots down the field.

  • Having recruited RB's, Olinemen and WR's to run the spread for the past 6 years its a little disturbing that the coaches are shocked how poorly we do in a pro style O

  • Thanks for sharing! Hopefully this place will be more civil to you!!!

    krzy4ut

  • Sounds like our typical reaction to this sort of thing. Nothing surprising here, but thanks for sharing.

    RichUT

  • This isn't shocking at all. List some players on offense that are sure fire NFL draft picks? There are none.

    Quarterback

  • Any comment on the special teams. If possible I'd say they are worse right now than the offense.

  • "linemen confused on who to block or getting too high"

even if they knew who to block they still couldn't do it.

Hell, Hix couldn't even get out of his stance and just watched Ayers blow by him.

  • thanks for posting EM.

i wonder what we're going to end up doing about this offense. we've got one week till OU. where do you even start? it's totally perplexing right now.

    zoethelizard

  • Thanks for that, EM. Good to see you still posting despite all of the BS you are given elsewhere.

"They need to start over" sounds ominous, but I don't see how else to do it. The offensive coaches should have learned in the UCLA game that what they have done for four games ain't working, so going back to the drawing board is the only real option with the running game, despite it being rather intimidating. Better to sort it out now -- despite any growing pains it brings -- than to stick with what simply isn't cutting it. I just hope being so "shocked" doesn't slow down their preparation for OU.

  • EM, thanks for posting. Always good to hear what the inside is going through.

    I want to add this:

In some ways, you wish this would be an off week, so they could get their sh*t together.

And in others, you're happy that it's OU, because you know that focus better not be a problem.

  • I don't understand how the staff is shocked. The offense has struggled all season and the defense is susceptible to being exposed by the run after the top DTs get tired.

    alincoln

  • I said from the beginning that Texas would best be served offensively to be in 4 wides with Monroe as the RB. Speed makes up for little blocking.

Monroe got absolutely no blocking on his long run on Saturday, and still got 20 yards. If he had gotten one block from the WR, he would have scored a TD.

    NLeininger

  • I'd be surprised if I lost by 22 a game I was favored by 16.

As Johnny Walker said, outside of DJ, all phases of the game stunk up the place.

Think some people are kidding themselves if they don't think there are problems everywhere, not just on offense.

Defense played lights out in the first half. The offense not only was horrible throughout, but shows zero signs of potential. The book on us is written and every team capable of matching us with athletes will completely swarm our simplistic offense. GD will not run plays with deep routes as realistic targets (only as clear out routes).

And other people are kidding themselves if they think the issues are anywhere near as problematic as the issues on offense. The attempts at equivalence by some are absolutely ridiculous.

  • Running deep routes is pointless if both safeties hang back (as they've been doing) and double or triple cover anything going deep. They can afford to do this because our running game sucks so much that they can stop any running attack not named "DJ Monroe" with just 6 defenders in the box. Throwing lots of deep routes against the defense we've been seeing will only double or triple Gilbert's interception rate.

We have only one major problem on defense, lack of a second elite DT. That can easily be schemed around as long as our offense doesn't put us in deep holes. If the offense can just not turn the ball over and score even a couple touchdowns a game, opposing teams can't just pound the ball and try to run the clock out on us.

Muschamp said in so many words that the defense began taking more risks going for turnovers in the second half because they knew that they would be getting little help from the offense, which resulted in more yards given up and more sustained drives against us. Credit UCLA for taking care of the ball in the second half.

Question: Does Mack have an aversion to hiring a top offensive line coach?

Agreed. The offense is a complete mess. Special teams is poor but not crazy poor. The defense is fine.

Equating the issues of the defense to those of the offense would be for the criminally insane.

The defense gave up about 70 yards in the first half. That's a very good half of football, despite being put in some awful situations by bad special teams and offensive turnovers. It was only in the 2nd half when they felt like they needed a gamechanging play that the defense started to give up yards. These are UCLA's first half drives:

    Own 20, -1 yards, punt
Texas 20, -11 yards, missed FG
    Own 20, -1 yards, fumble
    Own 20, 29 yards, punt
    Texas 4, 4 yards, TD
    Own 41, 37 yards, FG
    Texas 33, 2 yards, FG
    Texas 42, 15 yards, fumble

On average, UCLA's offense started their drives just on the TEXAS SIDE OF THE 50 YARD LINE. Despite that unbelievable handicap, the defense gave up only 13 points. On UCLA's 3 scoring "drives" in the first half, they TOTALED 43 yards combined.

  • As a contrast here's out drive chart the first half (credit Scipio Tex):

    6 plays, 42 yards PUNT
7 plays, 24 yards FUMBLE (UCLA now has ball on our 46, defense prevents a score)
    3 plays, 7 yards PUNT
4 plays, 5 yards FIELD GOAL (Texas D gave offense the ball on the UCLA 19, we manage a field goal)
0 plays, 0 yards FUMBLE (Curtis Brown fumbles inside our 5 on punt return, UCLA receives gift TD)
6 plays, 22 yards DOWNS (The 1st of our many short-of-the-sticks debacle)
2 plays, 3 yards FUMBLE (UCLA gets the ball on our 33, defense holds them to a field goal)
4 plays, 15 yards INTERCEPTION (UCLA has ball on our 47, defense prevents a score)
4 plays, 31 yards END OF HALF (No attempt for points with Justin Tucker after Texas D gives back ball, botched series)

The defense is alone in this fight and can expect little to no help from the offense.

  • This sets up to be a pretty fascinating game. OU has glaring problems and Mack Brown teams have always responded extremely well after loses. Usually those were loses to OU followed by Texas rallying the troops the following week...it will be interesting to see what happens with the loss coming before the OU game.

I have a sneaky feeling Texas is going to play a lot better than most of the nation will think.
