aggy already has 13 commits?

  • Damn the OP is taking a beating and he really didn't say anything wrong. Sumline appears to be a good recruiter and hard to believe that Texas has only 5 commits so far and aggy has more than twice as many.

Did I miss something or are you guys just overly sensitive after not getting another commit in two days. lynchmob

OP is an Aggie trying to get a reaction out of us.

  • Sherman did a smart thing towards the end of his tenure. He stopped going head-to-head with Texas and OU for the most part and instead targeted players that either had academic or off the field problems that scared off Texas or players that might be Texas' 3rd or 4th choice. My guess is that Sumlin probably is just recruiting the same players he might have targeted had he stayed at Houston, but it is an interesting approach. As others have pointed out, they will lose most of those 4 stars and their 3 stars will stick.

[Sumlin] Would you say I have a plethora of 3 stars?

    [Beaty] A what?

    [Sumlin] A plethora

[Beaty] Oh yes, you have a plethora!

I think A&M has some nice players in their class.

At the same time, I don't think Texas is envious in any way.

this is exactly my view. A*M is doing fine. Sumlin is a good coach and will recruit for them well. I FAR PREFER that A&M get the good guys and not OU. Any we don't get (and Tech does not get, sorry folks its a family thing with Tech), I am happy for A&M to get.
Hope they go to the SEC and do well.
Just hope that we dont play them again in my life time.
I am leaving A*M to my son and his generation in my Will.

  • As one of the Ag posters said on one of their boards, what Sumlin is doing differently from his predecessors is offering the 2nd & 3rd-tier guys now, instead of waiting until after he's lost all the head-to-head battles with Texas and those guys have already been scooped up. At this point in his nascent big league coaching career, Sumlin is, out of necessity, focused more on quantity than quality.

This (for the most part, but certainly not in all cases) is good for us, since he's now getting talent that the OUs and OSUs of the world used to get and we now won't have to face those kids. At the same time, those guys alone probably aren't good enough to make A&M a serious perennial contender in the SEC West, so the "SEC-SEC-SEC" angle likely will lose its shine in short order.

11/24/11: 27-25, 76-37-5, a winning record at Kyle Field, and bragging rights 'til Gabriel blows his horn. Well...bye.

  • So basically they have almost as many commits this year as they have decommits from last year.

I really don't think it's a huge shock that they have so many commitments compared to us right now. We haven't even offered as many players as they have committed. Right now, I don't think their class is as good as their class last year, and they're filling up on some questionable/UH-level commitments really early. I don't think anyone questions their top 5-6 guys. But there are quite a few unknowns in their class as well.

Perhaps Sumlin has evaluation skills along the lines of Sherman, like the year Sherman got in early on Klinke and Ogbuehi. Perhaps not. I'm not sure that they can continue to recruit the 5th, 6th, or 7th best classes in the SEC on an annual basis and expect to do anything in the SEC. They're going to have a problem recruiting if they go 6-6 or worse and miss a bowl next year. The shininess of Sumlin & Co. will wear off quickly, especially if we show significant improvement in 2012.

Just had an aggy friend tell me that they had 13 commits, and several of them were invited to junior days at Texas, but didnt bother showing up, instead committing to a&m! Wow! Looks like Sumlin is a pretty good recruiter. Kinda hard to believe that Texas has only 5 commits so far and aggy has more than twice as many!

It's all about quality not quantity.

  • Not sure when numbers of recruits earlier than someone else became to mean a "great recruiter." Appears to me to be a somewhat desperate strategy on Sumlin's part to put up a facade of recruiting prowess. It's only when you average the star ratings and see it way below UT's that it becomes apparent. Grabbing a bunch of 3's this early is like a marathoner sprinting for the first 100 yards and claiming he is winning the marathon isn't it? Kind of silly if you ask me.

  • That is the Trxas recruiting approach circa 2007. And considering they have a huge need to generate some momentum it might not be a terrible strategy this year.

But there are at least five players in that group already who have no chance of contributing in any meaningful way.

  • Its early yet and in a year Texas has limited spots open I like the way things are progressing at a more measured clip. If Aggie has some one our staff really wants then there is a good chance we still get that recruit. Signing day is a long way away and if we choose to compete for a recruit we are by far the best suitor.

  • Aggot raced out to a big recruiting lead on everyone last year. And by lead I mean sheer number of recruits, though the quality was lacking for 3/4 of the class just as it appears to be this year in the early going, and I dont see a future stud QB or 5* back in this group like last year. No, kohl Stewart doesnt count because I really believe he will be spending his future in the minor leagues, not striving for mediocrity in the SEC SEC SEC lol I dont really see any difference in recruiting philosophy from the last coaching staff. Am I missing something?

    ROACHCLIP

  • Based on the last class, they'll need upwards of 40 commitments just to fill a class of 20 or so players. They'd better get out to a running start.
