a few thoughts on a Sunday morning

first a few cliffs from coaches meeting today:

Mack told the staff he's coming Back and there will be no changes. Said he's excited about improving on 2011 and is excited to see this staff grow with the team. Said he wants this Bowl practice to be the most intense since he's been here. Said after that going into the spring all positions are open. Said Texas is starting over and wants to see young players improve and get their chance to show something.

Having said that, there serious pressure coming from the top guys to get rid of Diaz. I was told Texas is willing to make a run at the best of the best and will pay for it. If they get rid of Diaz it's very telling about Mack's future with this program because he's is Diaz's corner.

Although the top 3-4 Boosters are with Mack, the vocal minority of former players and Boosters is getting bigger and louder. So much so that Mack is starting to ostracize anyone that he knows of that has said something negative about the program, players or coaching staff.

Mack and ESPN are having quite the feud right now. So much so that it is even becoming a source of dissonance between Mack and deloss. There was an incident last week where Mack got fed up with a few members of the ESPN media crew and denied their request for a segment.

You want some sunshine with that?

Texas isn't as bad off as some of us think. There's some reason to have a tempered excitement going into 2013. Here are some notes from someone within the program:

Texas is expecting several defensive Juco commits over the next month. Really excited about that because they feel these are guys that will be able to help them right away. Feels Texas needs to get much better at LBer and Safety in order to get to the next level. Says Texas needs to get bigger and stronger at outside LBer.

Speaking of, two players they are really excited about going into spring is Peter Jinkens and Tevin Jackson. If those two players can take the next step along with Kendal Thompson then this Lber crew gets a LOT better with Hicks coming back. One interesting thing I heard is that Hicks could be playing at MLBer again if they can't get someone else to take the next step. Texas feels a lot better about OLBer than they do MLBer right now. This position group should be very competitive this spring and will be one that probably will shape the face of the 2013 season. If Texas can become much better at Lber than this team can take a big step forward.

Did I mention that Peter Jinkens? He took a step forward last night?

Last night was a game that we saw the pressure finally get to Harsin in terms of his willingness to use Daje Johnson. There was some smoke that daje might be looking at his options after the season and not wanting to be another DJ Monroe. Yea, he only got 6 touches but he accounted for 100 yards of offense and it was clear Harsin wanted him to be involved. I believe he was targeted 10 times last night. Suddenly Daje has about 500 yards of offense on less than 50 touches for the year. Not too bad for the freshman.

How about Malcolm Brown? All he did was come back from injury and prove he's still going to be a factor for this program. I said it before and I will always say it, he's the most talented RB Texas and yet we're all so quickly to pass the torch to Gray. Yes, Brown's obviously injury prone and I'm not sure he can be a "full-load" running back but in this new college football era you don't need your top back to do that. If he can come in next year and stay healthy and share the load with Gray, this team is going to have one of the top 3 running back groups in college football. And Brown has never had a good OL to run behind.

Speaking of OL, Texas is looking at yet another Juco OL to bring in for banquet weekend.

I should have a few more notes later this week.

  • If all true, can't wait to see the sediment after the Horns get blown away by Oregon St.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Oregon St is the best matchup for the Horns at all.

No way the whole staff survives three straight losses and finishing 8-5 after finishing 8-5 last year. If that happens, then Texas truly is on the decline like in the mid 1980's.

Coaching changes could escalate a National Championship type run in 2013.

There is that much talent on the 40 acres.

  • OP just further cements the notion that Mack has incredibly thin skin. The ESPN stuff is also surprising. If push comes to shove who does Deloss side with, Mack or his precious LHN?

  • If Hicks can play MLB I'd like to see it..Edmond is just too slow...needs to drop 20lbs at least..no need for him to be 255 in the Big 12

  • The original post reads alot like Mack & his staff have been reading the various Texas sites...& wanted to intentionally release this information...just too coincidental for that same information that's been floating around multiple sites, to come out after a "coaches meeting" this morning

Quite honestly (if this information is legit), what else is Mack gonna say today?

  • Went to the Bama game yesterday and a few things stood out to me. First was their linebackers. They are big, thick guys. Our linebackers look like toothpicks in comparison. I understand that the Big 12 is much more pass oriented, but considering how terrible we were defending the run it would be nice to have some run stuffing lb's. Second thing was they had two great rb's and they needed them both to win. No reason for us to not to utlize Gray and Malcolm for at least 15 carries a game each.

I am more concerned about Diaz coming back but in the end while I disagree with the direction I will cheer them on anyway. Here's hoping 2013 is better but I saw little progress from this team year over year.

Their Oline is ridiculous too but the RBs run like someone stole their lunch and they are going to get it back at all cost.

If Mack and Diaz both come back, I will not attend nor watch a single game in 2013.

    That is a promise.

    1. So not only is the old man returning, but he isn't making any changes? 0% shocking that the old fart can't see the problems with the team.
    2. Stupid. Cheesy. Inconsequential. You can not preach intensity when you coach it out of players, and make coaches change from raised voices and vulgar language to throwing hats. A Mack Brown coached team will never, ever, be intense.
    3. Complete and utter bullshit.
    4. So these idiot millionaires have the nuts to call for Diaz' head, but not Mack's? Spineless. 1 putrid year and 2 average years is grounds for termination. He doesn't deserve to keep his job because Vince won him a ring and Colt & Muschamp almost did it again. Just spineless.
    5. This would mean a lot more if it was talking about head coaching replacements, not DCs.
    6. What does this mean? Talk about ambiguity. Does this mean he's leaving if Diaz leaves? Does it mean that he's going to pout like a baby some more?
    7. This is nothing new.

I said something earlier in the week about this because i thought I had read somewhere Mack thinks Diaz is bright and has a future so he doesn't want to ruin his career by canning his ass. stupid is as stupid does.

That being said I cannot fathom being unwilling to make a change at DC and thinking thats a good idea.

I know Mack can't see his balls, because of his big ole belly, but I didn't think he was actually devoid of them.

  • If this report is true there is one question for Mack Brown.....................

He told the press on many occasions the practices were intense and physical etc. Few examples was after the 2006 regular season (before the Alamo Bowl), after the 2007 season (before the Holiday Bowl), after the 2011 season (before the Holiday Bowl) and then the week after RRR this year.

So the question is why don't we practice intense and physical all of the time or do we just do when Mack Brown's job is in a shaky state?

  • When Mack repeats that he is not ready to go, he needs to be reminded that may not be his decision:
