The NCAA tourney is an extreme longshot.
The NIT has never taken a sub .500 team in it's 75 year history.
However....
The CBI tourney has taken several teams in the past that have finished with sub .500 seasons. Washington St. was 15-16 last season, and came within one game of winning the CBI. The year before, Oregon was 16-17 and ended up winning it all.
Here's the catch; the CBI tourney is a pay for play tourney.
"The CBI, of course, is a pay-to-play deal. Teams that host first-round games are required to shell out $35,000 and the fee goes up in subsequent rounds, doubling by the finals. But home teams also make money from the gate (as well as concessions and parking), so it's still a moneymaker unless absolutely no one shows up. The problem is going on the road to play. Then the losses could mount, but that's no different than going on the road during the season." http://www.wvgazette.com/Sports/201302200291?page=2
Texas has plenty of money, and could certainly "pay for play" all home games if they wanted to get more experience for the future.

Will Texas try to play in the CBI basketball tourney?
