Will Connor Brewer be the odd man out?

  • Mueltrain06 said...

Brewer is more like a 4.8 guy and does not possess very good lateral quickness (I think he timed out at 4.56 in the short shuttle his senior year which is well below average, even for a QB). He is not a guy you want running the zone read very often because if the defense doesn't respect your running ability the play is useless. He was built for the spread where the system requires quick throws and accuracy. So that part of Applewhite's plan would suit him perfectly. I just don't see the zone read being something that Brewer would be particulary good at or suited for.

Could he run it a few times a game as a change of pace, sure, but he is not near as athletic as Overstreet, Swoopes, or even Ash. Brewer ran a little in high school (384 yds his senior year), but I wouldn't call him a dual threat by any means. His top end speed may be the same as Colt's but I'd venture a guess that Colt had better lateral quickness and was a better athlete than Brewer is.

I'll take anyone at backup QB over Case though... what a waste.

Can tell you for a fact he ran a 4.6 his senior year at the Texas camp.

Because the coach she was recruited by was let go. Connor is his own man. He has family at other colleges. So what

This. I'll say it again, he's not going anywhere. Especially not due to his sister.

Not a knock on the OP, but I don't know why this topic comes up 1 or 2 times a month.

I just don't see him here past spring or the 2013 season because of the offense moving towards a up tempo/zone read attack and he's more of a pocket passer. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I like the run/throw option myself, but up tempo doesn't mean he couldn't run the offense. Okie State's up tempo was pretty hard to stop when Weeden was there, just as well as when they've had guys who could run and throw.

That, and the recruitments of Overstreet, Swoopes, Heard, and flirting with Nick Marshall. Pretty clear indication of the direction AppleWyatt want to go with the offense. Brewer is the last of the nonDT QBs recruited.

I'm fairly confident that each of those Qbs were recruited by Harsin. He liked a guy capable of extending plays and running the occasional inside veer option. He rarely ran any ZR outside of a Belldozer type player at Boise.

AppleWyatt may employ them differently, and really, Heard is the only non project of the bunch.

  • I think Applewhite is going to run an offense that's going to resemble the offense Greg Davis ran. He'll need a qb with a quick release, is accurate, makes fast, smart decisions, and has good feet. I think Brewer is all that.

I can tell you for a fact he ran an electronically timed 4.82 before his senior year at The Opening... The Texas camp, I believe, was around the same time. You tell me which time you trust more... Hand times or electronic times

I think he and Applewhite were on the same page for a more mobile future. Just look at the "Ash package" and the various incarnations of the wildcat starting with the extremely effective WildFozz. The JGray wildcat was his go-to short yardage play in 2012.

The future of football is the mobile quarterback.

  • I don't think bringing up wildcat packages with Gray or Whiitaker taking s a snaps really helps your argument. In fact, they, like the Ash package were merely ways for us to run the ball when we struggled by more conventional means. Surely we would have seen more of the veer of ZR this last year with Ash taking the majority of the snaps, or more packages to get a player like Overstreet in the game if that's what Harsin wanted. He didn't. BSU never had an issue running the ball without their Qb's legs, and we wouldn't have either if we had stayed the course.

My conclusion is that Harsin wanted a mobile Qb, but not necessarily a QB centric run game. Applewhite may go another direction. We'll see. And we'll have to watch what Harsin does at ASU to see what he truly wants in an offense devoid of Mack's input.

Don't see how he would have recruited Swoopes to anything other than a QB centric run game.

Does DT in the quoted post Defensive Tackle, as in S-L-O-W, quarterbacks?

Now that I re-read the post, I'm even more confused.

You could say the same of Overstreet except that Harsin has never used the ZR or inside veer as anything but a change of pace, or as a package he's run from the wildcat or with a specialty QB at BSU. And frankly, Swoopes doesn't seem to be the kind of athlete that you build a QB centric run game around. Certainly he's more mobile and athletic than your average pocket QB, but he's no VY, Cam Newton, Pat White, or any of the series of QB's that Oregon has plugged and played. He's a tall athletic QB, but nothing that will keep DC's up at night on a QB keeper.

Harsin wanted some guys who could make off schedule plays when the opportunity presented itself to combine with an already stout rushing attack and play action series. You go find a quality dual threat quarterback if that's what you want to do. Whether he picked the best option to fit that bill is also another matter for debate.
