Why have we had such tough luck with receivers?

  • Thinking about our recent failings at receiver. We really can't say we haven't had good talent. The list is long. Dan Buckner, Darius White, Greg Timmons, Chris Jones among others. I am curious what the thoughts are out there. I have heard various reasons including attitude but after a while doesn't it boil down to how and what one is doing? We have people not succeed in the defensive backfield but not the sort of meltdown at wideout.

  • Wyatt has only been here 1+ years and like Searles, takes time to turn the position over...It was years and years of ineptitude at all levels...

    all National top 100 recruits. other than Shipley it has been the black hole.

    Actually Buckner caught 40+ balls for Zona this past season.TTech under Leach had success with the same type of players. Crabtree was a 3 star, if I recall. Baylor's team last year had all those little receivers. Oklahoma State had two big receivers who were not too fast but won two hardwares as best in the country. I understand your view but I also see the side that says we are supposed to recruit good players and coach 'em up. I think we thought we recruited good players. I also realize we have new Coaches so we have to see what happens this season. Hopefully there is a sense of urgency to begin to produce successes from the position otherwise there is going to be a diminishing return with the reputation of the program. Our competition will have no problem telling kids about it before long if they are not already.

    you recall wrong.

    1. he was grade risk. talent wasn't the issue.

    2. it came down to Crabtree or James Henry for Texas, not both. we obviously made the wrong choice.

    Before him UT had Darryl Duke. He didn't maximize the talent on hand either.

    My memory sometimes fails. What was Crabtree coming out of HS?

    I agree mostly with this belief, but I think there were a bunch of entitled, low-motivation types/headcases like D. White and Buckner, Mal. Williams who could have been all everything but never could get the mental to match the physical gifts; A number of WTF takes like Montre Webber, Philip Payne, Marshall. John Chiles I think could have made a very nice slot guy if we had just put him there as a FR instead of pretending he could be VY 2.0, Brandon Collins was just a jackass whose wasted talented is exceeded only in Longhorn circles by Ramonce and Andre Jones. DJ Grant couldve been an all-conf TE and still might make my year upcoming if he can stay healthy and remember what he ate before the UCLA game this year. D. Terrell left too soon imo, Greg Timmons didnt ever make himself standout.
    I think Desean Hales and Chris Jones schollies were total wastes. Desean Hales could have gone to Justin Blackmon, Jeff Fuller, or we could have even kept Antoine Hicks that year. Chris Jones will always be a mystery. All I have ever heard of John Harris is that he practices well, and sure does look promising if only for him never being healthy.
    I think all in all, WR is up with OL as the most entitled underachieving position groups that helped torched UTs decade long streak of success and dominance. I am excited to see things turned around and the hardworking, bust-ass types getting the playing time and chance to lead the next championship-caliber UT teams into the future.

    Totally agree, maybe even if we had done it as a soph. He really had the qb dream though.

  • Hardly any quick twitch athleticism guys unless they were tiny. Kennedy was obsessed with recruiting big tall guys that just weren't quick enough off the line to create separation.

  • We got away from the speed receivers and started going with the big body types imho.

  • To me it was as much development as it was evaluation. Some of those kids were really good. Hell even some of the ones that went on to do something at Texas were slow to see the field. Everyone else seems to plug a freshman in and go. I can't think of another freshman that played outside of Ship and Davis.

  • Jones was a talent. He just would not do what you need to do on the college level to put on weight. PED's!!!

  • It has to do with the total evaluation of talent. There are a number of points that have to be evaluated and I think the staff has been letting the recruiting services do the evaluation for them. A receiver needs speed, but also needs good hands, the ability to separate, and the brains to learn and run precise routes. He also needs a good work ethic. Far too many times the staff has recruited the elite and the elite don't always have that work ethic and desire.

  • Texas' S&C program was at fault as well.

    Baylor has WRs across the board in size, but they all can run.

    Williams, 6'3 205 4.48
    Sampson, 6' 200 4.34
    Goodley, 5'11 220 4.34 (likely Wright's replacement)
    Lee, 6'2 210 4.52
