Hard to put Mack on the list. DKR had 3 NC and 11 conference championships.. Mack has 1 NC and 2 conference titles. The difference is huge. It would be like comparing Earl to Tre Newton. Mack is a good coach, but he will not go down as one of the greats in the coaching profession. Given the history and tradition of Texas, I think anyone on the list should be considered one of the greatest at their job.

    Meh, it's all opinion anyway.

I will say though... 28 different coaches have overseen the Longhorns and only two have given us an undefeated NC. Royal did that twice, and Brown once (so far)

Mack MAY not go down as one of the greatest coaches in the profession, but there is very little argument that he is not 1 (of two) of the greatest football coaches at the University of Texas. And, still has an opportunity to do even more with the group we return next year.

Happy to give Mack the silver medal. It actually is fitting. DKR is clearly #1. He has done a lot for the University of Texas. He will always be welcomed in Austin and respected. I fully expect to see a statue of Mack in DKR in the near future and he deserves one.I am just saying the Mount Rushmore of Texas is a little more selective.

  • I would put Bobby Layne, James Street, Vince and Earl on Mount Rushmore but I would put Coach Royal on the top of the Texas Capitol, replacing the goddess of liberty, and have him with a hookem sign facing the stadium that bares his name.

Mack does not deserve a statue at the University of Texas. 2 CC's in 15 years? 1 NC? Absolutely not, man. He's an average coach at best. He's a good guy, but that doesn't warrant a statue being put up in his honor. He also has a losing record to our rival.

Rushmore has room for more than 1 though... I agree that DKR is #1. Mack would be my #2, and then, either Street, Nobis, VY, Earl, or Ricky...

For you Kelso, we'll go ahead and put Peter Gardere out there. 4-0 against OU. Not a whole hell of a lotta else though.

Lol, thanks. I'm at least thankful that he has a 4-0 record against them. Now that deserves a statue!

Just imagine if he can bring us another NC next year, or the year after.

That would make him a lock IMO.

Even without another championship, he's the second best coach in Texas history - by far. Isn't he only like 30 wins behind Royal?

I'm not really looking to argue that Mack is in mine and I think there are plenty of people in this discussion. Great topic.

Lighten up! I didn't "pick a fight"... I made a recomendation for his list based on something that he specified as an important factor to him.

In all fairness, he listed his Mt. Rushmore, and someone else quoted it and said it made them laugh. It was only going to go downhill from there.

  • DKR, Nobis, VY, Street

Nothing but love for Earl and Ricky, but it's about National championships for me. Without those three players, we likely don't win titles in 63, 69, or 05. (Granted Nobis was a sophomore of that 63 team, but he was still a big contributor to a team that never allowed more than 13 points in a single game)

  • Good point but Scott Appleton might be a great choice as well. I still believe Bobby Layne is one of the greatest symbols of UT football.
Of Course we could have Tom Landry somewhere on there.

  • my view of Longhorn Rushmore would show DKR (who created the longhorn helmet decal), Tommy Nobis (the original #60), James Street (undefeated as QB) and Earl (first Heisman)...let's not forget that the real Rushmore doesn't have a president post Teddy R, so the Longhorn Rushmore also cannot reflect all great or event the latest great Longhorn...

I agree that you can't put Mack on the list, but the distance between what he has achieved and what DKR achieved is not as vast as it sounds. I was around in those days and always admired DKR, but judging by the way we judge NCs now, he really had two, in '63 and '69. The third one we all happily count was the 1970 season title Texas was gifted by the UPI pollsters, who declared their champion before the bowl season, basing it entirely on the regular season -- which we don't do now. And, of course, Texas quite literally fumbled away its bowl game against Notre Dame. UPI is long gone and I've never counted that as a Texas national championship, though I don't blame the folks in the Texas athletic department for doing so since that was the way UPI did it back then. (Texas finished third in AP's final poll that year.) And the Southwest Conference in those days was not as tough as the Big 12 in Mack's tenure; it was basically Texas and Arkansas and everybody else scrapping for third. Blow U and Nebraska were still in the Big 8. I'm not saying this to denigrate anything DKR did; the guy walked on water as far as I'm concerned. But Arkansas was never going to be able to get the best Texas kids, even when Broyles was there; Darrell was going to get them.

So on that note, I'd say leave Rushmore to the players. But boy, hard to hold it to four, there's just been too many great ones. You could make an argument for Street, Nobis, Earl, Layne, Ricky, VY, Colt, Jerry Sisemore ... and hey, what about Jerry Gray?

    Can we have two?

    What about you guys?

James Street wants to know how the only quarterback in Texas history to be undefeated as a starter gets left off this list? Oh, he also won a national championship.

Gardere has almost as many wins against ou in his four years on campus as Mack does in his 15. Think about that for a minute.

Just as interesting is the Mt. Rushmore for DB's.

Johnny Johnson, Raymond Clayborn, Jerry Gray, & Mossy Cade

Cade doesn't belong with the others IMO.

    Interesting topic though.

I think Gray is No. 1 then after that it gets muddy. JJ is in there. You have to consider Huff, Thomas, Jammer and Richard.
