Who here is a Dallas Cowboy fan?

What about our Mods? Are you guys Cowboy fans? Booby? Gerry? Jeff? This is actually kind of interesting to me.

    I meant Bobby. Oops.

  • I get geographical proximity. I get rooting for a team whose former head coach had been a Horn, even if he seemed to go out of his way to not draft UT players (none selected between 1964 and 1986).

I don't get rooting for a team owned by a clown from Arkansas who seems to relish drafting Sooners, Razorbacks, and Aggies at visible positions (Jones, Murray, Bennett, McGee--though I will admit Murray was a great value at pick 71) and who insists on inviting teams from out of state to play in his stadium, giving them a recruiting footprint in Texas.

I'm a Smith fan for sure. Cannot stand Aikman or Irvin, but Haley, to me, was more of a 49er, so he was tolerable. I always liked Larry Allen too

I was lucky...During the 90's living in Denver, a good friend of mine was the son of one of the coaches. We would travel back to Dallas and meet over at his parents house on a Sat afternoon...It was always interesting to be sitting out at the pool when the RB's started showing up for position discussions and food before they headed off to the team hotel...Moose was my favorite... You just could not ask for a nicer guy...Guess that is why this 90's version of the Boys was always my favorite...

That coach got me tickets to my first Super Bowl in Pasadena...What a time!!

I had to upvote. I loathe the Cowboys and take joy in their suffering but I tried to hold my false impartiality, as not to start a thread offending Cowboy fans and creating a battlefield of cowboys and indians. I think the only thing that could turn me was if Jerry signs Vince after Tony Romo chokes again. "Oh no! We suck again!"

Well Smith was all class to go along with that world class talent. Haley and Allen were monsters at their respective positions. I despise the 49ers but they were good and Haley was just great with them and the boys.

Haley was one of the best DL's i'd ever seen. I agree that he was great on both the cowboys and the 49ers. He was just a force on the line.

Another cowboys favorite of mine will always be Staubach. I wasn't born when he was playing, but i've seen what he did and he was a class act AND a very talented player.

  • He would pull them out in the 4th quarter every time against the Redskins. At least it seemed so to my young, Redskin loving eyes. He was the anti Romo. Super clutch and as good as any qb, ever.

  • This is a screwed up team! EVERYWHERE you look it is crap! Defense is an abortion, and the o-line is total shit. I hate watching them yet I continue to punish my self..

  • they will never win big again as long as jones is there,The dumbass has completely got away from the hard nose defenses and the grind it out offense, that they won so much with during landrys heyday and jimmy johnson. Its a shame that 1 person can destroy a franchise the way he has,i have always been a cowboys fan but cant hardly watch them anymore. they are pitiful.

Being a lifetime Longhorn, I have never been a fan of the Cowboys. My interests followed Earl Campbell to the Houston Oilers. I even remember rooting for the Redskins as child against the Boys. After Jerry Jones took over there was no way in hell I was going to be a Cowboy fan. I was just wondering how many pOsters are/are not fans of the Cowboys. Maybe if they drafted a few more Longhorns my attitude might change but I doubt it. More of Packers/ saints fan now after Tennessee dumped several Longhorns.

It is strange that my kin in North Carolina are really big Cowboy fans. Not really they met at North Texas I guess. But when we skped last night there was Tommy in his cowboy cap. He goes to several games a year. Me I have two teams. UT and whoever is playing OU. Actually there is a third team. The Montgomery Bears. I am indifferent to the cowboys, dislike the Texans over not drafting Vince, and I do root for the Saints with Drew Brees- as I do know his family.

You summed up a lot of my feelings better than I could. I never did understand why the cowboys never took a Horn for 20 plus years.

Rodge dodger had fire. Always wanted to win. Not enough (Cowboys) to beat the Steelers.

  • I grew up a huge 'boys fan way back to Dandy Don, Morton, Lee Roy, Bob Lilly, all the way to the Jimmy Johnson days....was at the Cotton Bowl in 1966 when Meredith threw the interception in the south end zone as time was running out to lose....when Jerrah hired Barry Switzer I was off the reservation. Jerrah hasn't done anything since to bring me back to my roots...just don't see how any Longhorn fan could root for the Cowboys these days with Soiee Jerrah in control.

I am disgusted with Jerry too but with that logic, DKR nor Mack Brown would have ever been allowed the reins in Austin...and no, I am not comparing Jerry to either DKR or Mack...

Being a fan of the Cowboys does not necessarily have anything to do with being a fan of the Longhorns...

I hear you...haven't loved in Dallas for 10 years...now in Houston. Bottomline I'm a Longhorn fan first and last...I see nothing in the makeup of the Cowboys franchise that says I should root for them...even though I was an America's Team disciple back in the day....

  • Everyone loves a winner. The Cowboys have taught me that.

But I love the Horns through good and bad, and I can't say that for the Cowboys.

I grew up, like many of you, idolizing Staubach and Landry. I still remember not understanding why Staubach had to retire, and may dad trying to explain it to me.

I hated to Landry ousting, but came to love the Jimmy Johnson 'Boys. What a team.

And now, this. Jerry Johnson sucks, to put it mildly, and even many of the true die hard Cowboy fans don't deny it. They are a warning sign to Longhorn fans, IMO. Making more money than anyone else does not = fan happiness.

Only one thing can make a fan feel the same way they feel on their wedding day: Championships. This Cowboys organization doesn't get that or doesn't care. It's evident in the way they run things, from drafts down to the smallest things that makes pro teams great.

It sucks, but I find more to admire about the hated Steelers than the Cowboys these days. Free agency changed everything, true, but Jerry Jones is a blight on old school Cowboys fans. My God, the man hired Switzer.

  • Cowboys fan who wants to punch Jerry in the throat and banish him to Cuba, get rid of Garrett, and try to start this thing over from scratch. The Cowboys are the epitome of soft and undisciplined in the 21st century.

First, when it comes to professional sports, it is usually geographical proximity that generates interest. As for the other things you mention, some of them have to do with luck and some of them have to do with the fact that professional sports are strictly business, and are not conducted with an eye toward "securing the borders" or being loyal to the local college teams.

Once a loyalty is firmly established, people generally continue to root for the team, even if they don't like the way the team is currently being run, or some of the player and coaching decisions. When free agency first hit the NFL, Troy Aikman (who had just signed one of the largest contracts in league history, no doubt skewing his viewpoint) wondered aloud, "What are the fans supposed to do? Root for the uniforms?" When it comes right down to it, that's exactly what we do.

  • I'll never forget my first year as a Cowboys fan. I lived in Mexico at the time and my uncle took me to see the Cowboys vs Redskins when I was just a kid. Cowboys ended up beating the Bills 52-17 in the SB that year. I never stopped following and never will.
