Who fills the staff opening?

I know there is a limit on the number of coaches out recruiting, but is there a limit on the number on payroll?

    Yes.

  • I am watching Mathis coach his Desoto Eagles right now on FSSW+ and he is intense. A natural leader that we could sure use. I would sure like to see him coaching the RB's at Texas....

Burton Burns is making $290k this year, and is probably in line for a pay increase if they win the title this year. He's also 60, so he's probably plenty comfortable with the fact that he's a career RB coach and not really looking to bolster his resume.

Unless Texas gives him a ridiculous number that he's forced to consider, like $500k, then I doubt he's moving.

    Harsin made $625 Major - 500 Wyatt - 315 Searels - 425 Chambers - 200

I'm assuming Major gets a raise to what Harsin made, Wyatt gets a raise as well, and Burns would command a higher salary than Searels and surely more than 90k more than Chambers.

Those were 2011 salaries. They each got a bump this year.
    $700,000 - Diaz
    $700,000 - Harsin
    $575,000 - Major
    $439,500 - Searels
    $413,500 - Akina
    $344,000 - Davis
    $206,500 - Giles
    $206,500 - Chambers

The point still stands. Texas could justify paying Burns as much or more than all of the non-coordinator assistants.

  • Oh I agree, it just makes your point stronger. Just didn't want anybody thinking we are lagging behind in salaries.

  • Desoto's season is about to come to an end, so I'd imagine we'll find out relatively soon if there's any smoke to the Claude Mathis rumors.

    Either would be solid

I agree with hammock or mathis, unless somebody like Anthony Johnson jumps to the top of the list unexpectedly. I think there is ZERO chance the rb coach at Alabama comes to Austin--actually, it's probably less than zero.
I would be willing to throw in Mad Dog, as part of a package deal with Diaz, to any school that would be willing to take them.

To add on to this, Burns' salary has gone up 16% since the 2009 season, which means he coached a Heisman winner and 1st rounder, a Heisman finalist and first round, two national championships, and only got a pay raise of 16%.

    Meanwhile...
    Smart went up 163%
    OC pay has raised 61%
Their S/C coach makes more than Burns and his salary has gone up 103% in the same time frame
Their WR coach (two guys in the timeframe) is now paid 26.7% more than he was in 2009 (2009 guy "put" Jones into the top 10)
Their DL (Bo Davis) was making 250k, their DL coach now makes 310k, for a raise of 24%

"Among coaches who have been here the whole time, Burton Burns’ pay increased the least."

As unreasonable as it sounds for a guy with no ties to Texas to leave for a lateral move, I could definitely see him leaving if the pay check would substantially better.

I get where you're coming from, but I would assume Alabama would bump him up to around whatever we offered. He should hope that we contact him for that very reason.

Pretty bold move. Figured it would be Rucker. Of course Mack, the former RB, couldn't be bothered to get his hands dirty. Or does he even remember playing RB?

Tells me that Bama either doesn't really value the guy all that much or that they feel he's tied to the program and lifestyle at age 60 and won't want to move.

Also, Sumlin is gaining rep as having aggy being the hip place to be, do we counter than with a 60 yr old grandpa from Alabama?

Some red flags there for sure as to whether we'd even want to hire the guy

    DexterStanley

  • Burton Burns sure looks like he would be a great hire as would most of the Bama staff.
