Where do you stand with Rick Barnes?

I'm between A and B. He has been here long enough to have the benefit of the doubt. However, I feel he has not progressed as he should.

I question his going on these recruiting sprees to get the so-called "one and done" recruits. Any one knows you need that type of player; however, you also need the bread and butter guys that are going to be the staple of stability for the 3 years running.

Also, Barnes needs to quit fighting the fact that he needs an offensive coach that teaches the basic fundamentals of basketball. I truly find myself wondering exactly what type of plays Barnes is running. Barnes is a defensive coach. I agree with his coaching ability there. However, our offensive plan is too simplistic and every coach in the county knows how to defend us. Tell me why he will not get someone with the knowledge to do what everyone knows is the right thing to do and that is to have great coaching on the offensive side of the game.

If Barnes has another bubble year or a one and done season, I would hope that Dodds would look for another coach.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that for the money this university pays it's coaches that we should all expect MORE! And that includes basketball (men and women) , football and baseball (softball). I was totally appalled to hear Plonsky make her absurd comments regarding GG. This university should not need to wait over a 3 year period to decide if the coach that was hired is or isn't doing a great job. We should be in the mix in all sports! I wish we could send a message to the Dodds and Polonsky's of this World that we expect greatness from all aspects of sports here at Texas and we expect them to make this happen!!!

  • nothing to really add here.

i'm a big fan of Barnes but absolutely sick with the one-and-done players.

obviously, you recruit Kevin Durant, but you can't take multiple one-and-done kids in
a single class or even successive classes.

not only does it hurt the team, but it makes it very difficult to be a fan when you make
the Erwin center a turnstile for kids that have no roots in Texas.

  • ...and one other thing, i think making the tourney is a ridiculously low standard.

while I have reasonable expectations and am proud of our 14 consecutive tourney appearances, we all aspire to be more than one of the top 64 or so teams in the country.

What makes you (and others with this view) think that Barnes is satisfied with that?

  • Do you guys think there is as much whining on Kentucky boards about all of their one and done players under Calipari, as there is here?

There is obviously a reason they aren't.
    Because they win.
I don't see how that point is relevant.

So, would you fire Brad Stevens and Sean Miller since their teams didn't even meet that rediculously low standard?

Too me this is the problem with trying to bring in someone else. These guys can't even do what Barnes has consistently proven to do over and over.

Yeah, they avg 2-3 a year and we have had 4 in the history of the school.

I guess you are also making the arguement that their guys are more talented, but shouldn't that make our guys easier to replace? Shouldn't that also have more of a negative impact on their next season?

Actually, my uniformed comment earlier was not directed at you. I know you actually follow basketball and know what you are talking about, even if we have different opinions on certain topics.

My point with Kentucky is that it obviously is not a stupid idea to recruit one and done players. Kentucky makes a living out of it. I don't know the stats on this but I would have a hard time coming up with a NCAA champion that didn't have a top 20 recruit on their roster.

It is funny to me that people talk about wanting us to win a NC, yet they whine about recruiting the one and done guys. Harrison Barnes and Jared Sullinger were both expected to be one and done. Where would OSU and UNC be if they didn't recruit those guys because people believed they would be one and done? Where would UK be if they stopped recruiting one year players?

The one and done players aren't the problem, especially when they replace each other. The problem is our evaluation of our 3-4 year players, which ironicly is what most people want Barnes to focus on.

  • HoopsCoach & Bob in Houston -

Read my original post, I'm a huge Barnes fan. I said I was proud of the 14 year run, never said Barnes was content with first weekend exits from the tourney.

btw, Barnes detractors, we were ranked no. 3 in the country barely a year ago, right?

so Barnes apparently needs to do a better job recruiting one-and-dones to stay for a second year.

that's easier when the kids have some roots on our side of the continent (Sullinger is from OH, Harrison from IA).

...both Gibson and Aldridge stayed for more than a year (although rehabbing Aldridge's hip kept him around for another year).

It isn't 64. Think harder, it's more like the top 40. I'm not saying that should change your opinion, just that you aren't thinking clearly.

Close to Jumping thinks replacing Barnes is a boring topic. That is because he can't come up with someone we can't all tear down. Everyone has faults. Everyone makes too much money. Basketball is a different sport on so many levels. Our fans have no idea how to comprehend that.

  • I think I'm closer to A than B now. Is his record the past 5 years that much different than Coach G who just resigned because she wasn't moving her program forward. I mean they both made it to the NCAA playoffs each year and lost in the first or second round. I understand not being able to keep the players long enough to create a great team (leaving for NBA early), but other schools manage to do it. We may be a football school, but Baylor putting together great teams and whipping us - that excuse doesn't hold water any longer.

No, he needs to recruit one and done guys like he does, assume they are going to leave, and recruit accordingly. He just needs to hit on more of his other recruits. Maybe recruit more 2-3 year guys as well.

People that want more Texas recruits act like he isn't trying to do so. His goal when he got here was to sign the 2 best players from TX every year. I still think that is his goal, but with AAU recruiting getting shadier every year in TX, this becomes more difficult.

  • I think it's A, but I've been at A for a few years. I don't need volumes of evidence to determine someone isn't that great at his job.

Baylor has lucked out big time in the tourney and we destroyed them just last year when they missed the tourney entirely with a veteran ball club

Just because Barnes is the best we have had, it doesnt mean we cant do better.

You always should strive for excellence, otherwise you are likely to end up mired in mediocrity. Which is exactly where Texas basketball is right now. Its just an "acceptable" form of "mediocrity" to some because "Texas is a football school." Not true for others.

Why have we won NCs in baseball if "Texas is a football school"? That excuse is as lame and worn out as...well I wont go there. Ill just say its lame and worn out.

Exactly! Not only that, but we have won a basketball championship at Texas as well. The women. There is absolutely no logical reason Texas can win a women's ball championship and not a men's.

I'm not going to knock anyone for having an informed opinion. I just don't believe that most of the people in the A category are a good representation of true fans. Based on their other comments in their posts they are obviously not very knowledgeable on the subject.

Idk if Barnes will ever win a NC but I do think it's possible based on teams he was able to put together in the past.

I answered B, but I don't think that's a fair statement. If Barnes was still producing teams of that caliber, I doubt we'd be having this discussion. The reality is though, he appears to have been passed up by a couple of in conference coaches. That's not acceptable. He needs to raise his level a notch, or we need to find someone who can. Regardless of recruiting tactics, we can't have Baylor out recruiting us. Nor is it acceptable for Baylor to make deeper runs in the tourney than we do. Now, this could all change next year. That's why I answered B. However, the trend is disturbing.
