Where do you stand with Rick Barnes?

  • Now that the season is over and it appears we're going to lose both Brown and Kabongo, I was hoping to see where everyone stands on the state of the Texas basketball team. I know lots of people are frustrated with our current run of one-and-done's but where do you fall:

    A) Texas basketball has peaked and is on it's way back down. It's time for a change.
    B) The next year or two are make or break for the Rick Barnes era. Making the tournament is great but we need to start showing progress again asap.
    C) Rick Barnes has made the tournament 14 years in a row at a football school. I'm happy with that and don't want to risk losing that for the sake of change.

I really like Rick Barnes and recognize the limitations on the Texas basketball program, however I'm leaning towards A over B. I feel like much of the excitement built up from the TJ Ford through Kevin Durant years has left and I have a hard time coming up with a scenario where it returns based on our current situation. In the end, I can't help but remember how poor our offense has been in the tournament over the last 4 years and recognize that Rick Barnes is going to have a very difficult time winning it all with his offensive coaching limitations.

    Where do you stand?

  • I'm at B. His "bad years" consist of still making the tourney but the program must ascend. We are at a crossroads here IMO.

  • IMO, he should've been fired the minute he said that his goal was to get players into the NBA, instead of winning championships. Before that, I went to UT basketball games and followed the basketball team closely. Since then, I haven't been to a single game and very seldom even read any stories about his team.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

    that isn't what he said.

To be fair, I think that quote probably got taken out of context. I don't remember everything that was said but I think everyone focused their attention on the NBA part and ignored his discussion of how on court success would be a natural addition to his players developing into NBA caliber athletes.

I also should point out that I'd consider myself to be in the top end of Texas basketball fans. At this point I've seen a football and baseball championship so I would really like a basketball next. I certainly wont complain if the football team pops out another 3 or 4 MNC but I really would enjoy the trifecta of major sports.

  • Put me at B. I had my mini freakout after last years tournament and with all the youth here and coming and going I think he gets another year or two to right the ship. The one and dones have killed us. E need the team to gel and that just takes time.

  • "We would love to win a national championship, but we're not obsessed with it because we're obsessed with these guys trying to live their NBA dream," Barnes says, with a nod to their predecessors. "What's happened to Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, T.J. Ford -- I'd give up a national title for all of our guys to be able to live their dream."

Thought it would be best just to bring his actual quote over here since it has been a few years now.

    Hornographer

  • "I didn't say that I don't care about winning a national title," Barnes said. "Of course we do."

Barnes said that when he was interviewed by ESPN writer Elena Bergeron for this story, she asked him if he "feels the pressure to win a national championship" this year more so than other years.

"I don't know how anyone can ask that question," Barnes said. "It's every year you want to win it. I told her every year we want to win it.

Then his response after the uproar.

So you fell for people twisting his words into this obscene idea too?

  • I'm more of a B, with a pinch of C. UT has been to the tournament 30 times in the history of the school; 14 of those trips are under Rick Barnes. Yes, the tournaments have been disappointing the past few years, but 16 trips to the tournament in over 100 years, followed by 14 trips in 14 years.

I think that's a fair point to put the overall picture in perspective. To be honest, I don't even go back to the Tom Penders years so it's much different for me to say A than someone who has seen much worse times than now.

As much as fans want to see championships (myself included), I think the responsibility of college coaches is to help student-athletes prepare for life after college. If a coach helps a student-athlete get to the NBA or just be a better human, I'm good with that.

Championship expectations at Texas in basketball are not realistic IMO, no matter who is coaching.

  • B, but that is a slight overstatement. I said something similar at some point early in the season in a thread somwhere, but I think I stated it more along the lines that this year isn't (wasn't) a make or break season, but the next two years are critical to seeing if Texas will return to the 2003-2008 level of performance or remain as a annual brief tournament visitor.

I personally think Texas needs to start showing improvement soon, but I think it will with the maturation of a couple of deep recruiting classes, the bulk of whom will be around for a few years. Whether the AD would agree and can Barnes if the next couple of years doesn't see a deep tournament run and the establishment of a new trend for deep tournament runs, I can't say.

Why not with the talent in state and the money here there is no reason the hoops team cant win a Championship.

But that is clearly not the case, since we saw the team was there or nearly there between March 2002 and March 2008, making the Final Four once, the Elite Eight 3 times, and the Sweet Sixteen 5 times in 7 years.

  • I still think he needs a veteran assistant coach.
I suggested Doc Sadler in another thread.
Where Billy D actually made the turn is when he hired Larry Shyatt (Barnes disciple) to effectively serve as defensive coordinator.

  • You really need a D option-

    D. I do not know. I do not care. I am more interested in the Horns having an opportunity to sign up a 6 7 240lb qb who has 4.3 speed and already knows how to read and react to defenses.

Oh, I am a B. I believe it is Barnes ability to be a positive representative of class as regards our university that is important. Old Abe would not get his players to class and got into a fight with the faculty over it and was gone, Kaiser Bill got into trouble with key administration and played boring basketball and was gone, Tommy P. picked on the wrong player in an absolute circus of events, no wonder DeLoss is happy to be "worry free" with solid company man Barnes.

For some reason I could not upload the picture directly. The man in the grey flannel suit is a classic about the company man.

  • It seems like the majority of people are in the B camp. What would have to happen in the next couple of seasons to swing you either way? I know that's a tough question as there are lots of variables involved but I'm just wondering what the minimum expectations are as far as necessary improvement.

I would be in favor of hiring the women's assistant from Baylor. Barmore is a great coach.

  • More B. I think if we concentrate more on In-State recruiting we would be better

Shyatt is a good coach, but Florida made there turn by keen recruiting and having those underrated recruits stay an extra year. They also made the championship game in 99 before Shyatt was ever there.

He was assistant at Florida from 04-11. Take out the two championship years and they had 2 NITs, 2 first round losses, 1 second round loss and 1 elite eight.

I think Barnes got the veteran assistant coach in Lanier, so I'm firmly with B. However Barnes bad year was a very bad year and last year's finish didn't help.
