What's the deal with all of the recent "offers"?

  • I think Gerry Hamilton just put it the right way in a post below.

Texas is simply "throwing some lines out" to see who might be interested.

These are all quality players, so it's not a question of ability, but a question of who might have mutual interest. Gauging interest is simply part of the process.

The difference being that most coaching staffs do this after the kids junior season, not 3 weeks before NSD.

  • It's just confusing why so many seem to think they have offers after we make contact. It's very strange.

But is it not part of the process that should have occurred say...several months ago and not less than two months from signing day?

I think that's why most of us are all like WTF?

This, plus it's not like we have the type of momentum to pull off these last minute attempts. Seems pointless IMO. Maybe the staff is kicking tires and throwing out lines to try and leverage a commitment from Harrison etc, but I don't know. Just seems .... "disingenuous" to me.

This happens for other schools as well, but there is a contingent here that thinks it only happens to Texas because of Mack's "qualified for an offer" stuff. That probably complicates things, but many kids across the nation report offers when the school would not agree. It happens.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

  • These late offers haven't happened anywhere close to this extent in the past. That's probably not a good sign for who we have left on the board.

  • It is certainly odd, especially for Texas. Also you have to consider that a few of these have come from a new coach. Porter has connections that Major did not. He is out testing them. While it is strange, whats the alternative? Sit back and try to grab some low hanging fruit in some Texas suburb? We can argue about if they screwed up the last few months, but what they are doing now is a proactive move to make the class better. It may not work, but at least there is some activity..

  • Horrible job by mack and the Texas staff. He was lazy and now its biting him in the a$$. You do this months ago, not when everyone has made up their mind. He is not Mr. February anymore. Unfortunately, he probably thinks he still is...

  • I understand why they're doing it, as its obvious we've got a few spots to fill. The timing of it is what's bizarre to me.

There had been such a lull in recruiting at the end of the season, during which you all said they were doing evaluations and such. It seems like even early December would have been a better time to start reaching out to these players. At least that gives players two months instead of three weeks.

Looking back at last year I know Daje was a late commit, but there had been contact between he and the staff for months prior.

When did we get on Santos? Cottrell? I feel like they were the last two...

It just seems, from a worried fan's perspective, that the entire fall was a waste, recruiting wise. Our class shrunk, and few new faces were brought to the table... Until now.

  • I think we are seeing the results of the three beatdowns by OU. Lots of young men have rethought their opinion of Texas as a place to play for championships as a result. We need to hussle for recruits rather than cull them.

  • In other words, desperation. We cannot even convince 3 star junior college players to commit now.

Why wait until less than a month before signing day? The same needs they had after summer are the same needs they have now.

I think they struck out on a few they probably wanted. I think scholarships freed up when guys like Campbell pass, when Hicks and Smythe de-commit, when Harrison and Billings, and even Robinson, are still stringing things out.
