I think you're wrong, and here's why. People have such short memories these days, and nobody cares about anything but right now. That's the very reason that people are so down on Mack right now. If Texas was back in the Top 5 next year, the national perception would be right back where it used to be.

Just listen to those Alabama fans that call Paul Finebaum. Do you think Alabama fans care that from 2001 - 2007 they twice failed to make a bowl, played in the Independence Bowl 3 times, and the Music City Bowl once? Heck, no. They think they are National Champs in perpetuity.

This. I think the fan base here turns easily. So if he wins a national championship or gets to a BCS bowl while beating OU, that works. I disagree that the program has permanent damage even if he wins a national championship -- that statement is only a reflection of how down people are on the program right now.
