What we do on 2nd and short

  • This has been a complaint of mine for a while with GD, and I thought i noticed us doing it even more this year. Someone else noticed this and posted this on shaggybevo. This and play action on third and long, down by multiple scores are always my favorites. What I don't get, is why with a young QB we wouldn;t be looking to get him easy completions in this favorable situation?

"Texas offense on second and short (3 or less yards), not counting goal line:

    Rice
Ut 2-3 at Rice36 Johnson, Cody rush for 9 yards to the RICE27, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-3 at Ut22 Newton, Tre' rush for 4 yards to the UT26, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-2 at Rice38 Whittaker, Fosw rush for 7 yards to the RICE31, 1ST DOWN UT

    Wyoming
Ut 2-1 at Wy22 Gilbert, Garret rush quarterback sneak for 2 yards to the WY20, 1ST DOWN UT.
Ut 2-3 at Wy13 Newton, Tre' rush over right guard for 2 yards to the WY11
Ut 2-1 at Ut24 Whittaker, Fosw rush over left guard for 9 yards to the UT33, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-2 at Ut44 Johnson, Cody rush up middle for 6 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN UT.

    Tech
    None

    UCLA
    None

    OU
U 2-2 U25 Whittaker, Fosw rush for 11 yards to the UT36, 1ST DOWN UT
U 2-1 U20 Whittaker, Fosw rush for 24 yards to the UT44, 1ST DOWN UT
    U 2-2 U31 TEAM pass incomplete.

    Nebraska
Ut 2-3 at Ut33 Newton, Tre' rush over left tackle for 5 yards to the UT38, 1ST DOWN UT (*Note end of half on next play)
Ut 2-3 at Ut45 Johnson, Cody rush up middle for 16 yards to the NU39, 1ST DOWN UT

    Iowa State
Ut 2-1 at Ut18 Gilbert, Garret rush over left end for 13 yards to the UT31, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-1 at Isu19 Whittaker, Fosw rush over right guard for 2 yards to the ISU17, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-1 at Ut38 Newton, Tre' rush over right guard for 5 yards to the UT43, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-3 at Ut50 Newton, Tre' rush up middle for no gain to the 50 yardline

    Baylor
Ut 2-1 at Bu42 Newton, Tre' rush up middle for 3 yards to the BU39, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-1 at Ut40 Newton, Tre' rush for 6 yards to the UT46, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-1 at Bu30 Johnson, Cody rush over left tackle for 1 yard to the BU29, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-3 at Bu44 Newton, Tre' rush over left tackle for 6 yards to the BU38, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-2 at Bu32 Newton, Tre' rush for loss of 1 yard to the BU33

    KSU
Ut 2-2 at Ks41 Newton, Tre' rush for 1 yard to the KS40
Ut 2-1 at Ut30 Johnson, Cody rush for 3 yards to the UT33, 1ST DOWN UT
Ut 2-2 at Ut23 Gilbert, Garret pass complete to Kirkendoll, Jam for 15 yards to the UT38, 1ST DOWN UT

First off, we only had 24 2nd and shorts. We are never ahead of the chains. Our first down offense is an abortion. We had no second and short opportunities against Tech or UCLA. Two straight games without having a second and short seems almost impossible. Not once in those games did the defense jump offsides on first down and we run it for 2 yards? How is that even possible?

Out of the 24 opportunities, only 2 passes. One of those passes was in the fourth quarter down big to KSU. I can only assume somebody up signaling in the play on that one. The other was an incomplete "team pass" against OU. I can't even remember this, was it a trick play? Every other time, run. Run. Run. Run. Run. Run. Was this what we worked on all Spring to be a power running team? On second and short? On the positive side, our 2nd down conversion percentage is off the charts. On the negative side, nobody gives what your second down conversion percentage is, because it is second down. It's practically a free play if you have ever watched a game of football in your life. How is it that we don't take one shot down the field on second and short ALL SEASON, especially when you've set up the play action by running the ball every fucking time?"

  • QB sneak on 2nd & 1, classic.

    Quarterback

  • Quarterback said...

    QB sneak on 2nd & 1, classic.

I remember that. Just painfull. The decision to do that really should be a fireable offense if it isn't on the goaline. It shows such a lack of basic strategic intelligence....I just don't know where to begin.

  • HB toss.

    Legendary Horn

  • Maybe Gilbert wasn't loose on second downs with short distance to gain?

    groly

  • I'd say that's what you call a tendency.

  • I'd like to see the stats on what the offense runs after we get a turnover.

  • I'd like to see the stats on third and short. If the success rate isn't very high, second and short shouldn't be considered a free down, and while variety in the offense is always a good thing, maybe we shouldn't complain about an 80% success rate on getting first downs with running plays averaging 6 yards a carry when we have the 110th most efficient passing offense.

  • I hear what you're saying, but IMO you shouldn't let a fear of not converting a 3rd and short take away the huge advantage that you have over a defense in a 2nd and short situation.

If you were running a defense and the other team had you in 2nd and short, wouldn't you want them to run something up the middle or a QB sneak?

  • No, I don't mean the team shouldn't mix in some deep pass plays. I just think having a predominantly (just not overly so) rushing attack on second and short might not be such a bad idea with this particular team. That one was a qb sneak might be on whether the defense was set or a linebacker in position. Only about a third of the runs listed are noted as middle or off guard runs.

Should they get a little more varied? Probably. Should we want the team to throw more in general? Bite your tongue.

    bierce

  • Definitely not a call for even less balance. More about recognizing low risk/high reward situations and seizing them.
