What kind of punishment would you give Metta World Peace?

  • I think they should kick him out for the playoffs. That kind of crap needs to be dealt with, especially coming from this thug. This is the same guy who went into the stands and started beating on a fan. I can't believe Kobe was playing it down saying how everybody knows Metta is such a great guy. If that elbow hit Harden a few inches over, on the temple, it could have been much more serious.

I was at the brawl at the Palace the night it happened.... craziest night ever. Artest needs to be down, total scumbag. He tried playing it off like he didn't know Harden was there, but if you watch the replay you see him bump into him first then swing the elbow. The entire playoffs should be the minimum imo, it should probably stretch into next year as well if there's any justice. Raffi Torres got 25 games. I know it's a different sport, different rules, but that should be where the NBA starts with Artest considering his past.

  • Artest seriously is crazy, kind of scary if one day he goes totally mental no telling what that dude would do. If you look at him when he throws the elbow he just like he turned into a different person. I think it was Jon Barry who said I was Ron artest who did it not MWP. Should make a movie called Ron, Meta, and Irene.

  • I'm not entirely certain that punishment in this case should end with the league offices. There are on rare occasions incidents in sports that rise to the level at which I wonder whether there is a valid reason to not let the normal legal actions take place. The emotion of competition can't insulate all behavior from liability. Artest really pushed the limit of whether an act was merely outside the rules of the game or entirely outside the rules of civil and criminal law.

Had this incident happened at any nationally televised event other than a sporting event, the LA county prosecutors would have a charging instrument filed within a week.

  • It needs to be one of the most severe suspensions ever for an on-court assault. He's a repeat offender many times over and all other players know that they can't (or at least shouldn't) be suspended for a higher number of games for committing a similar act. This is a good, legitimate opportunity to make it clear that these type of non-basketball related acts won't be tolerated and will result in excessive punishments.

All that said, I doubt he gets more than 10 games. I'd personally like to see 41 games (half a typical regular season) subtracted by however many playoff games the Lakers play this year.

No. At this point, it should be a lifetime suspension. Bierce is right. This should go beyond league discipline. He should be looking at criminal prosecution. This guy is a sociopath.

How close were you in relation to the brawl in the stands?

  • David Stern loves any opportunity where he can display his power. Stern has a serious "napoleon complex". I expect the suspension to be as large as his ego.

  • No playoffs this year and 10 games next year.
I would also force him to chnge his name back to Artest just because he's a joke if he represents world peace.

    TXbravehorn

  • Standard NBA punishment for an elbow is 2 games. This one was pretty vicious, so let's say 4.

    GPie

  • He shouldn't see the court again this year, for sure. I agree with those that have said the remainder of this season and additional games next year. Whatever it is, it needs to be severe.

The "Metta" part is even more of a stretch. That is a Buddhist term that roughly translates to "Loving kindness," which is the caring for the well-being of another independent of any judgment of them and includes the practice of meditation to achieve a union of understanding with the other and ultimately resulting in finding true happiness in another's happiness.

I don't think that elbow was laid to Harden's head in an attempt to remove life's suffering from him.

  • Suspended from now until after Round 2 of the playoffs.
Name changed on jersey back to Artest, possibly misspell it to Arrest and blame autocorrect.
Fine him a game check for every game Harden misses.
Instruct referees to officiate him even more tightly.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

    Bierce,
I am with you. I think the last few years in sports (ok, maybe more than the last few years) have demonstrated that in many ways, maybe because of the money and pressure now involved in big time athletics, the rules of conduct are being stretched beyond any reasonable level of "what can be expected".

A lot of states have adopted laws that have "consent as a defense" to assault, and sports is one reason for such laws, but in those situations, you have to "assault in the way the other person consented to". (my words not some courts, but it is a good generalization)

That consent in sports is that you hit hard, but hit within the rules, and things that happen when you are clearly trying to be in the rules and something bad happens, well you did consent to this situation.

NOBODY in football consented ot what the Saints did with their bounty situation No one consented to the Saints intentionally going out to cripple them.

Sports is simply going to have to police itself or the real police will start doing it for them. I don't think that is crying wolf. I truly believe that, someday soon, when the next Brett Favre, playing in his home stadium, gets a knee blown up because somone clearly intentionally went out to break the rules and "do harm", some local police force is going to go after the offending player.

The bounty thing changed a lot of minds in this country toward this sort of thing. Maybe not for all die hard football fans, but for a lot of fans and DA's and cops.

So i hope the BB commish steps up and says they don't need the help of the police, this will STOP.
It is why i love what happened to the Saints and my two football teams are UT and the saints

  • Lifetime ban plus 10 elbows from MMA fighter Jon Jones.

  • On another level, Artest once again demonstrated that as a society we have lost the ability to genuinely apologize for bad behavior. His comment was something along the lines of "I'm sorry he (Harden) had to get hurt." He didn't "have" to get hurt. It wasn't a random, uncontrollable act of fate. It was a deliberate, premeditated action that could have reasonably been expected to inflict great bodily harm, and it did.

In response to the original question of the thread, my first reaction was: lethal injection.
