What about Brewer? Am I missing something?

Haha...was that known? I suspected it was mom, dad or him after that post and went through earlier posts and thought it looked obvious.

OP mentioned she was a mother on another thread, and I thought this one kinda dropped out of the blue. The time frame of the poster fits with his arrival on the 40 as well as the feel of a middle aged mom learning the ins and outs of a college football bbs, but I'm no great internetz sleuth.

Just enough to make you go hmmm...like when some Belmontians managed to drop by a few threads not so long ago.

  • IIRC she mentioned that she was 26, blonde, and that some of us might call her a chick.

The board has had a year to discuss and get bored with Brewer, while Swoopes is our shiny new toy. He is also a much more polarizing prospect, resulting in a ridiculous amount of discussion.

    Well put.

Swoopes is very much a project. And per people who know, he isn't close to Vince or RGIII despite the hype.

I have no clue if Brewer can unseat Ash but anyone putting any stock in spring game performances is simply odd.

The best thing for TEXAS long term is for Brewer to shirt in '12, backup Ash (or win the job which I doubt) in '13 then have 3 years to start. Now if Swoopes wins the job in '14 (after a much needed shirt year) or '15, fine.

If not, my understanding is there are a couple top flight '14 QBs and it would not shock me if Swoopes never starts at QB at TEXAS.

Or he could be the clear cut starter.

Keep this in mind (and assuming he shirts), is Mack Brown still running the show in 2014 or 2015?

Or if he is, is Harsin and/or Major still here?

What offense are we going to run? Cuz we're building a run first O with heavy TE use.

Moral of this long winded story is the Chuckie had the correct answer and we have a great deal of time.

But I stick with the idea we shirt Brewer, that is the long term answer to our QB depth chart problems which frankly has been a mess since Matt Norgren graduated. It certainly came back to haunt us in '09.

We have an experienced backup to Colt, I believe we win the title in 2009.

Ash showed almost no signs that he is the answer at QB in the spring game even against the second team defense playing vanilla formations. At best he appears like a serviceable game manager who will not lose games with turnovers except against excellent defenses but not win them either. Another bust in a long line of busts at QB since McCoy 1 was recruited in 2004. He does not seem like he grasps reading defenses well just like Gilbert and he does not have a great arm or accuracy either as offsets but may make better decisions than McCoy 2 or Gilbert. Brewer showed some promise in the spring. Brewer will likely be getting meaningful minutes by mid season 2012 if likely WVU and OU losses occur and may be starting in 2013 if Ash stays on his current path. Swoopes is a project with upside who might contribute in 2014 at the earliest so UT fans better hope that Brewer is the real deal or several championships will be missed unless the RBs and OL super perform/stay healthy and the defense throws near shut outs against the top teams.

He was a true Freshman, in a new system, that didn't start working on the full system until after 3 games into the season. We had no answer at either tackle position or at center. Still, we were 6-2 until our three top running backs went down.

Expectations of Ash were completely unrealistic.

  • HuttoHorn comes up with the exact explanation.

I've noticed that this is just the way things work in recruiting.

I agree with you and would add that a freshman QB who goes off-script too often will be riding the pine in almost every major college system out there. Coaches have this insane idea that they know more than the players. You earn the right to do that over time.

That's the real question to me. Depending on what kind of success Texas has over the next couple years I could easily see Mack riding off into the sunset.

Add in that all three coordinators (Harsin, Applewhite, Diaz) will get looks for HC jobs if the Horns have a lot of success on either side of the football. The down side of hiring the big name assistants is they're likely to not be around long before the big time job offers come around.

So really, the question is what kind of offense will Texas be running when Swoopes as a Tr. Frosh or RS Frosh. Unfortunately, we won't know that answer for a while.

Not a bad thing to have a solid pro QB and dual QB on the roster though.
