West Virginia oline

  • So, we're all nervous about WVU and their offense cause of holgerson and the whooping they put on Clemson. But I was listening to Jesse Palmer on college football live and he was saying that there line not only may not be great, it may not be good. Talked about stats from last 3 regular season games and they were pretty pedestrian, including giving up 9 sacks in the last two games. That tech type offense has always been about rhythm and if u can get pressure, u can slow/shut it down. With as much pressure we got over the last half of the year and what we are returning on the line, I have to think we can get to geno smith. If we can run on the them like I expect, I certainly have more confidence than I did after that orange bowl. even in that game, nobody talks about the clemson fumble at the one that was returned for a td and would have put WVU in a serious hole. Turned the mo 100%. Clemson would have a pretty big lead at the time, instead they just folded. Mods, what r ur thoughts on their oline?

After just reading the spring recaps, it sounds like their oline even had issues with their own sorry D.

  • I thought their o-line was solid the few times I saw them, including against LSU. But perhaps I'm giving too much credit to the O-line and not enough to Geno Smith's elusiveness and savvy. In the end it doesn't matter who gets the credit. They know how to move the ball and score. And they'll be a tough out for our D this year.

Hard to say until the season starts, but they seemed concerned about their defense going into the spring game and excited afterward. It could have been a situation where the offense made the defense look better. It happened to us a couple of years ago.

Lol. My original thought but I did go look at those last 3 regular season stats and they were right at around 375 yards a game against Pitt, usf and cincy, not exactly D powerhouses. If oline really is a weakness or at least not a strength, we may not have to win a shoot out which is what I was thinking, especially with our D. Not trying to get all cocky, maybe WVU is not quite as good as the impression of the orange Bowl left in my mind.

  • Every year there is an overrated team in the preseason polls based on their skill positions but the oline sucks. Inevitably the teams never live up to expectations. Maybe WVU is that team this year.

  • Their O-line is average sized but their defense is the size of Tech's last year. Hopefully we can run over their 3-2-2-1-2-1 defense and control the clock in Austin next year

I'm just trying to imagine what that would look like. lol

  • I think Texas beats them like a rented mule. I expect a big year though. I'm all in. I think as long as there is conservative play from the QB position and gradual improvement in the passing game, it'll be a BCS bowl type year.

WVU went to a 3-4 defense that will utilize a 4-3 when needed. No more 3-3-5, Thank God.

As far as the Oline goes, we have 4 starters back. We lost our LT who was the weakest link last season, and he will be replaced by Quinton Spain who is a monster.

That said, Spain and Jenkins will be the only 2 Olineman that compare in sheer size to the rest of the Big 12 Oline. The line improved as the year went on last season. Having 4 starters back has us really excited about this unit.

Remember, its Jesse Palmer. He also said we lost 8 starters on offense when in reality we lost 1. ONE. And that was the weakest OL we had.

  • I'm very much in the WVU is overrated camp, their win against Clemson was more of a fluke than their losses. The defense lost most of its punch and the middle is especially weak, its a great match for Texas to have.

Not sure what broadcast u were watching, but he sure as heck didn't say anything about them losing 8 starters. Go check out those stats in the games he talked about. He was dead on and and btw, I will guarantee jj and oak are a lot better than the DEs for usf, pitt and cinc. I think holgerson is an awesome offensive coach and Im trying to trade for smith in my cffl league but ur smoking some nice stuff if ur not worried about our dline.

Who said I wasn't worried about your Dline? I said that WVU's Oline will be improved and we are excited to watch it because of the 4 returning starters. I never said anything about Texas' Dline.

I'm not worried about WVU putting points on the board. What will make or break WVU's season is how well the 3-4 defensive transition goes. Linebackers and DB's aren't a problem. The 3 down front? That is a problem as of right now. If they haven't improved from last year(we had Bruce Irvin and Julian Miller as seniors last year coming off the end) then that will be a weak Dline, no doubt.

Appreciate your thoughts & constructive feedback, MarineMountie. That's what makes these boards interesting.

Looking forward to seeing how y'all transition to the Big XII... Y'all & TCU were nice additions, IMO.

Can't wait to see a game in Morgantown where I can get my (legal) drink on!

Count me in for the above!

Most schools will use the LSU approach last year's game... run the ball till they stop you, score in the Red-Zone, play good, opportunistic defense & create pressure & turnovers! If you can't run the ball & score and don't have a good defense that will keep that type of "Run & Shoot" 'O' off balance, then it will be a long day against a Holgerson offense...
