Waiting for the Texas offense to show up

  • from Cedric Goiden in today's Statesman...

We're still waiting for the UT offense to show up

That 22-play drive that Texas put up in Lubbock on Saturday night was the offensive highlight of the night.

  • Why the net has rapidly killed newspapers.

Brown and offensive coordinator Greg Davis have to be resisting the urge to just hand the ball to Gilbert and have him wing it 30 or 40 times; they're hesitant to put so much on his young shoulders this early

We threw 35 times vs Wyoming and 36 vs TT.

Not sure what "urge" is being resisted but I'm curious what games this guy is watching.

If we were going to put it on GG, he'd be throwing 45-50 times a game which frankly, is fine with me.

  • When it comes to the Texas offense.... it is what it is. I just don't see much improvement happening through the year. We may never see it show up this year and play to our expectations.

I think this is what concerns most everyone. If that's the case, then the Cotton Bowl awaits (or maybe the Alamo). But then again, the defense is outpacing expectations IMO.

One can win far more games with a great D than a great O.

Short of us really stinking it up, hard to imagine us not getting tapped by the Cotton Bowl.

Hard for me to imagine Texas loses 3+ games with this defense.

  • I'm sorry, but I don't know why people are surprised by our offensive ineptitude, especially the ground game. Fact of the matter is that since 2004, we haven't been able to run the ball UNLESS we happen to have bonafied superman RB playing QB. Selvin Young said it best, and I'm paraphrasing "it's a heck of a lot harder to stop the running game when you're worried about trying to stop two RBs".

Truthfully, until Young took over for Mock midway through 2003, Benson didn't exactly set the world on fire running the ball either. Since then, year after year, especially in the early part of the season, we tell ourselves the same lie - "we're only holding back play for OU. On Oct 2, we're going to bust everything open and shock the world".

You know what, fool me once, shame on you, but fool me 15 times...

I don't necessarily agree with this comment. The Horns didn't exactly light up the scoreboard in 1983 (except Rice and aggy), but their defense kept opponents from doing it either. The 2010 version of Texas Football may be capable of doing the same thing.

    that's hilarious!

  • Nothing will change much in our running game except slow, gradual improvement, unless DJ or Shead start getting serious reps.

    It is what it is.

  • IMO, this isn't 1983. Offenses have changed. Teams will score more points even against solid defenses because they stretch them in different ways. And the passing game has evolved.

But this defense has a chance to be the best in the country (along with maybe Nebraska).

I have a hard time seeing them lose three games, too.

Where Texas is at the end of this three-game stretch (UCLA, OU and Nebraska) will be the barometer for season (unless injuries start cropping up).
