UT Football Predictions?

  • I think UT might go 7-5 in football this year. I think they will struggle against OSU, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Baylor and TCU. What are your thoughts based on their schedule?

09/01/12 vs. Wyoming Austin, Texas TBA
09/08/12 vs. New Mexico Austin, Texas TBA
09/15/12 at Ole Miss Oxford, Miss. TBA
09/29/12 at Oklahoma State * Stillwater, Okla. TBA
10/06/12 vs. West Virginia * Austin, Texas TBA
10/13/12 vs. Oklahoma * Dallas, Texas TBA

  • 10-2 is more likely than 7-5. Not that I think 10 is guaranteed or anything, but 7 wins only is a pretty low ball estimation.

It's somewhat early to tell. I don't know how decent the offense will be. If they can move towards more "error free" football then the defense will likely be able to stop the likes of OSU, WVU, and Baylor. Probably the biggest hurdles will be OU and KSU. We shall see. That is why they play the games instead of asking people on the internet.

  • Supposing relative health I see 9-3 as the worst probable outcome with losses to WVU, OU, and wait for it.....KSU. I think it's possible that OSU or BU could surprise, but probably not both. 8-4 is certainly possible, but it would take catastrophic injuries or all QB's coming down with mono simultaneously for 7-5 to enter the picture.

The optimist in me sees a 10-2 or 11-1 season with losses against one of OU, WVU, or another team that jumps from nowhere to hand us a second defeat.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

  • Its hard to say. There are questions with texas, but just as many questions with their opponents. It has to be based on what you saw last year which means, very good defene, not so good offense. That might lead to 7-5 thinking. If you feel the OL is for real, then you think 9 or 10 wins.

I say anyone with a pulse on the DL will give texas trouble. Fortunately for you guys, thats not very many teams on the horns schedule. Wyoming and New Mexico is just more practice. Ole Miss cant stop sunlight to make a shadow. OSU cant keep their DL off the blotter. OU is good when healthy. WVU isnt good but runs that 3-3-5 that will give you all kinds of stuff to worry about. Kst wil bring it. KU wont. IAst is always game. TCU will be decent only because its late in the year. Baylor is confident, so weather they are good or not, they will play like contenders. Tech has no DL.

So, by that count, I say 2 to 4 losses. OU, OSU, Kst, WVU.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

WV won't be using the 3-3-5 any longer under DeForest. They switched to a 3-4.

  • 9-3, then 10 wins with the bowl win. This will be our last sub-10 win regular season and we may just surprise and finish better than this too. We have the horses so it just depends if they exceed expectations and stay healthy, but I realistically expect a minimum of nine wins in the first 12 games. These young, serious coaches are not busting their intense butts and working the players for anything less than to be big winners so Zoo Uncle let me help you step up out of the muck and see a little sunshine because that was last years team not this one.

Really, how do you figure that based on last year's results and returning players? Texas had the best defense in the conference last year; produced a 7-5 record while debuting a new offense and defense; a new DL, OL, WR Coaches; by all accounts this year's version of the OL is better than last year's; behind the OL is the best assemblage of running backs may be in the school's history--no respect to the Tyler Rose; Ricky and Ced; and finally, a QB with one year of experience and maturity in the system.

So how did you come up with 7-5. Did everyone we are playing get better while we got worse?

I am a troll and I like making stupid predictions about UT football because I am jealous!

He didn't really say that, but that is what he thought.

    UT27am25

  • West Virginia, OUsucks and Kansas State have me worried, but that's it. Oklahoma State and Baylor both lost their great QBs and TCU doesn't have enough talent to last the season, imo. If the team can stay relatively healthy, and no positions are cursed (RB last year) then I think 9-3/10-2 in the regular season.

I do not share the same confidence many harbor in the QB, WR and kicker positions. There is also some reason to fear that the OL might get pushed back off the line a bit, but there should be improvement there. I'm not suggesting the other teams, or UT for that matter, are that much better from last season.

I hope my prediction is way off, as the State of Texas needs the Longhorns to return to prominence, as does the Big 12.

  • Evaluating this team is difficult..........much like the 2008 team. Gil Bryant always says to be a good team the QB, Left Tackle and WS-DE must be good-to-excellent. The WS-DE position on this team is very good. We don't know how good the QB or LT will be at this point. For me I think Ash is going to be a good QB for the next 3 years. I love his intangibles.

Its interesting how things tend to be different from predictions. Most people thought the 2008 team would be average but for me it was the best team of the Mack Brown era. (they played a extremely difficult schedule and finished 12-1). Last year most experts thought the offense would carry the team and the defense would struggle but it was the other way around for most of the season.

For me now 9-3 with a Cotton or Holiday bid sounds about right........

08 was a great team and a lot of fun to watch, but the best team in the Mack Brown era brought home a crystal football.

  • Definitely seems like a troll effort. But I'll play regardless. Baylor and OSU simply lost too much offensively. Baylor less so IMO because they have an experienced QB. But their defense is awful and will remain so. I think our running game gets it done easy in that one.

OSU we get pretty early in the season, don't think they will have much time to get better before they face our D.

I don't like the stretch of ole miss -OSU - WV - and OU. Yes I think we win the first 2 but the fact remains those teams have just enough on offense and defense to soften us up for our 2 biggest tests of the season. In the end I think we get it done against WV, our D should be enough. But I believe OU has a cupcake before us. I would say we have a 50/50 in that game but the circumstances make me think they def have the edge.

KSU is the only other I'm worried about. But we get them at the end, so I think that is ours to lose.

I know I'm a homer but 13-0 is not out of the question. But I'll go ahead and say 10-2 for now. And if the team eclipses that, then hell yea I'm happy. Not to mention a 10-12 win season easily makes us a favorite for the MNC next year. Rant over.

I don't think LT is as important as people claim. The best ones in the NFL play on the worst teams.

  • i normally like this game, the prediction game. But this year it is tougher than normal for me to play. Why? Same three reasons that get cited all the time.

    1. QB. I like Ash, really do. And i even think Case is a good backup guy and i am glad he stayed around. But he is still not "there". He has still not shown he can be "the guy" that can lead us to great places. He has improved, and trust me i am with the guys that say "hey he was a true freshmen, no reps in spring or summer ,la la la". If after the first three games we see that he really has stepped up and can be our real leader and not just a game 'manager" ,than that moves me closer to the 10-2 or 11-1 prediction
    2. Center. If we have a center, than we have a really fine OL. But we have to have the Center position filled and strong. I just don't know yet
    3. kicking game. Got to kick the 3's. Got to. We may have to be a defense oriented team and play some close games. Got to have the 3's covered.

defense is a huge plus. and by OSU time, we should know about the offense

    so i will predict 10-2

and by the way, here is one prediction , for real

WE WILL NOT LOSE TO ksu. Not gong to happen. Not this year, and not again for a long time. Those days are done.

  • Can't make a serious prediction. There are things that I love about this team. There are a few concerns. If the concerns work out, we could win them all.

1 - I have high hopes for Ash. If he takes care of the ball and passes well enough that opposing teams can't stack the box, we'll be hard to beat.

2 - If Espinosa can control the Nose Guard, it will really help us.

3 - Kicking game. The punting looked good in the spring game. Obviously, we need someone to be consistent kicking field goals.

4 - Related to number 1. The receivers need to step up. With a passing game that puts pressure on defenses and the type of running game I think we'll have, we will be a nightmare to stop.

(Notice I have no concerns on D)

I really think we can go undeafeted with the way our D will play.. I think if our O can capitalize on some Turnovers that our D will force in big games then we can be very good...If our D forces turnovers wich i think they will. The two teams i think that could beat us is OU and WVU... We shut Kansas State down last year and we almost won if it wasnt for our crappy offense performance.. We have the talent to do it, it is just the matter if we can..
