  • I was talking with Mark Rosner of the Statesman last night about how this game got a whole lot more interesting with the recruiting classes both schools had. Not sure how I feel about it being in Reliant though.

  • Doesn't make much sense. The Rockets home arena would have been more appropriate.

  • I'm just pleased that we'll have a game to see in Houston...

We played UNC in Arlington at the Cowboys stadium, it makes as much sense as that.

The difference in that was it was the first year the stadium opened and was the first bball game there. It was as much about the stadium as it was UNC/Texas playing. If they played in Dallas now, it would more than likely be at American Airlines Center.

  • As to why Reliant?

Its my understanding if a city/dome hosts or will host a Final Four they must at certain times have a "dress rehearsal".............when Reliant first opened Texas played Rice.

The interesting thing is the game against Rice when Reliant first opened was played with an AlamoDome style layout where the basketball court was perpendicular to the football field and at one end of the stadium. Reliant's configuration for the Sweet 16 and Final Four was the new layout where the basketball court is the same orientation as the football field and mid court is at midfield. That configuration has a lot more seating and is probably a lot more expensive to set up with temp seats in every direction and a raised floor. Will be interesting to see what setup they do. Obviously, it will be an embarrassing turnout regardless, and I don't think the City of Houston can be blamed, just not the right building for the interest level. The Texas-Michigan State game was not sold out at Toyota Center.

I don't think it will an embarrassing turnout at all. While the MSU game was not a sell out there was a good crowd. The JerryWorld game vs UNC drew 40,000 and was the most watched college basketball game on ESPN for many years.

  • Prices for both of those games were too doggone high but I was there for both. So who is the patsy?

What I meant is I think you'll have a turnout around 15k, which is not an embarassing number, but will look embarassing in Reliant. I do not see the 40k number from JerryWorld for a few reasons. First, Reliant is still a great, great stadium, but it is now 10 years old and has hosted a Sweet 16 and a Final Four. No one is going to go to this game to experience basketball at Reliant Stadium. There have already been plenty of opportunities for that. Second, Texas and North Carolina that year were both elite teams. This game both teams are coming off very mediocre years.

This year, both teams are going to be much improved.

Last year's game was one for the ages... the Dark Ages.

UCLA mediocre yes but a team that makes the NCAA tournament is in way mediocre.........IMHO We might say mediocre for Texas basketball ............but not for most of the basketball world.
