    Very.

  • that's some suprising news. I've barely heard of this guy and I think we all expected Walsh to win the job.

He's had no problem making decisions like this in the past. See: Zac Robinson over Bobby Reid.

    Meanwhile in Austin..............

I didn't know what the expect, honestly. Unlike some coaches, Gundy has never had a problem with promising starting positions to players based on hype coming out of high school or previous performance. He's always looked at the position very objectively and chosen the player that he thought gave them the best chance to win and had the most potential to get better going forward. And the results pretty much speak for themselves.

I'm just surprised that the winner is a true freshman that should be getting ready for prom. That's impressive.

While I generally agree with your statement if Harsin had named Ash the starting QB then there was a good chance that McCoy, Wood and Gilbert would have all transferred. I believe that is why Harsin had Ash playing with a package of plays because he wanted to get used to playing if Gilbert didn't perform.

I think that Gundy has Lent, Walsh and a Junior at QB so he might have a transfer problem.

This. Gotta think this will light a fire under Walsh and Chelf. It'll be interesting to see if either of those guys comes back after a big summer to try to get the job from the true frosh.

That I understand. I'm just asking what's the excuse now that Ash is taking most of the first team reps now anyways? Why are they still trotting that BS line about "needing two QBs" out there for the public when everyone knows it's Ash that'll start come September (barring any (unforeseen) circumstances? Are we still afraid Case is going to transfer if we name Ash the starter now? If so, why in the heck do they care?

    Black Shipley

  • Heck, I didn't even know Lunt was in the running for the starters job. Everything I've seen basically said it was a battle between Chelf and Walsh.

We are in agreement on that. I am not sure why they don't come out and name Ash the starter now. I would be fine with it if they did name Ash the starter and McCoy transferred because of it.

  • So, surely we can beat OSU with a true fish QB this year. I think our chances just got better assuming he keeps the job.

    Agreed.

While I think Mack Brown is a great coach, I respect Gundy a lot more when it comes to how they treat their quarterback battles.

I always find it funny that coaches assume that not naming a starter = more competition and thus more improvement. It's such a fallacy. It's very possible that somebody could work harder once they know they're the starter. It's also very possible that a back-up could work harder knowing that he's behind the competition.

I just think it'd go a long way in helping Ash take on the pressure of being the QB at Texas incrementally rather than all at once in the Fall. Name him the starter now. Let the media and others interact with him as such now and during the summer and he'll be a lot more used to it than if it were to occur in the Fall when they are trying to gameplan week to week.

Sadly, I think they'll play this two-QB semantic crap all the way up through the first couple of games, which will not serve as an endorsement of Ash in any way and will do nothing to instill confidence in him.

  • I think Mack has a ton of respect.....maybe to a fault, for the McCoy family and doesn't want to come off as sending any negative messages Case's way by naming Ash the outright starter. I'm probably wrong here, but I've wondered about this for a while and Mack is definitely strong with his PR skills. Just my 2 cents and based on zero fact.

I think we've probably disagreed on this before, but the public appearance and the quarterbacking reality likely aren't one and the same. From what I've gathered reading the various reports and seeing the way the spring game unfolded, the Texas QB position is about as open has it has been the previous five summers. This is Ash's job, just like it was Gilbert's job heading into the summer out of the spring last year. I'm optimistic that he can hold on to the reins beyond halftime of the second game, though.

There just seems to be a huge disconnect in what you just posted IMO. UNless I'm just misunderstanding what you are saying.

You say the public appearance and the reality aren't one in the same. In public (Spring Game) we saw both QBs get reps with the first team and Mack even mentioned that Case did some nice things (even though he threw some really awful, I mean, terrible passes). In public, Mack spits out the previously mentioned "gotta have two QBs to be successful" line of garbage. But yet, just about every report we've read here states that Ash is getting the lion's share of the first team reps and that he's going to likely end up the starter come September. The two don't add up.

I just can't fathom why on God's green Earth Case even has a shot with his physical deficiencies considering the fact that he was looking to transfer during bowl practices. It makes absolutely no sense. He's lucky he has a scholarship.

Either Brad McCoy has some serious dirt on Mack and will pitch a fit of epic proportions if Ash is named the starter, or maybe Mack has fallen head over heels for Case after the win against A&M. But still, if that were the case, why did Ash start and play the entire bowl game? Maybe he and Harsin just don't have a clue and we really have no QB. If so, we may be in trouble.

I don't know. I just don't get it. It's pretty plain to see that Ash is and will be better than Case, but yet here we are, about to go into the summer 7-on-7 season with no clearly defined leader for our team to rally around.

Was Mack not watching Florida circa 1998 with Doug Johnson and Jesse Palmer? I mean, COME ON!

Ok. I gotta take a break. I FEEL LIKE I SHOULD BE TAKING CRAZY PILLS!!!!1!!

  • The key is to find out if the other two decide to transfer as ours seem wont to do these days. Also interesting that they can name their starting QB and their program doesn't go into a tizzy. We seem to be one of the few schools that has a very hard time doing that. Wonder why?

Yes, both QBs got reps with the first team, but only one of them went out there first. I think the spring game cemented Ash as the starter. Mack comes out after the game saying that there's an open competition, Case did nice things, etc., either because he's trying to keep Case engaged, he's handing out verbal participation ribbons, or the previously mentioned illicit pictures currently held by Brad McCoy.

We had the same situation last year as well. McCoy got reps with the first team in the spring game, but Gilbert was the guy all summer with the first team. It continued into the fall until the 2-8 and 2 pick performance against BYU. We all wanted to believe that the competition was open because none of us were sure that Gilbert was the guy (putting it kindly). It wasn't, though, just like every other QB "competition" since 2006. I get that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense and can be annoying to have Mack out there giving these statements, but it is what it is.

Now, if we go into next fall and we're shuffling QBs the first few games or Case is the guy, then I'll have a lot of concerns with significant question marks floating over my head.
