Top 10 and Bottom 5 Horns

  • Man stuff like this is why I love this site. I might just cancel OB. I can see Nack blowing a gasket reading criticism of individual players.

  • I think Bergeron is the most overrated player on the team.

Not sure how Cobbs is not on the Bottom 5 list. Close to zero production, missed tackles, missed assignments. Maybe you left him off because he lost his job to Kendall Thompson.

Maybe we need a Top Ten and a Bottom Ten

Yeah, nothing says "real men" like Willow. clap

    So is Davis to blame?

No, not at all IMO. I think it's a combination of talent and scheme. Dez Jackson and Chris Whaley simply don't anchor well at all, especially not when stunting and on the move. They tend to "run" instead of maintain leverage.

    Couldn't agree more.

  • Well you are entitled to your opinion but I sure don't blame Bergeron when he is called to repeatedly run into the middle of the line where there are always two tacklers waiting for him.

And when you have run the same play basically, over and over, even the dumbest defensive coordinator will figure out eventually what is coming and be be able to defense it.

First drive of 3rd quarter, we stayed on the ground and got inside the red zone before we handed off to Bergeron and he was hit 4 yards in the backfield that killed the drive.
That wasn't Bergeron's fault. It was lack of blocking and non-imaginative play calling. We had run the ball on 1st and 2nd down every play of the series, throwing on 3rd down when forced. Eventually, West Va. knew what was coming and we were not good enough to simply out power them as I suppose we thought we could do.

First and 10 from the 12 yard line and once again, two running plays that never had a chance for more than 2 yards each. and then finally, when we are forced to pass, we blotch the play and end up getting nothing with a long missed FG.

In my books it was not solely the defense that deserved the blame for the loss. the defense was good enough if the offense had executed when they had those two blown opportunities.

  • Bergeron has a role on the team for sure but he's not the most talented runner and it's obvious by watching.

If people talked about him in terms of a nice complimentary back that can come in and lean on a tired defense than I have no issues with that. My problem is when he's put up as being as good as Gray or Brown. He's not and those two should receive the bulk of the carries. Now I understand that if there's injuries it changes a little but that doesn't change the fact that putting Bergeron on the field means you're taking someone that is better with the ball in their hands off.

The issue is what he was recruited as in his class. He was supposed to be an h back and I think Texas has lost their way again with what his role should be. He is not a feature back.

I'm not concerned about what Bergeron is or isn't. Its been a silly that people tried to make into into something that he never was. What I don't understand is why people are pointing fingers at the defensive tackles when its painfully obvious that the problem is scheme, linebacker play and Jeffcoat. None of our defensive tackles are Suh or McCoy; but neither of those two could have closed the freeway that opposing offenses have been running through in our guard tackle gap on the weak side. Jeffcoat is being ridden 5 yards outside and up the field opening a massive gap that no defensive tackle who is lined up head to head with the guard or on his inside shoulder has a chance to close. It has to be either the WLB or the MLB and neither can be seen, even on replay. I don't know where this meme has come from. I've seen it elsewhere; but its silly. Our problem isn't Bo Davis's group. They aren't great; but they aren't the heart of the problem.

  • I'm not a fan of these posts with the bottom X players on the team. Those players are already under attack constantly on the board. Why do we need to feed the mob?

Bergeron is an interesting example of how someone can get eaten by the group think that goes on. He hasn't changed his style or speed from last year. Yet at many points last year and during the off season probably 95% of the posts were concerned that MB was getting too many carries that should go to him. Now people are on here saying he is overrated. He is still there in the same capacity of a big bruiser designed to wear the defense down. Why do certain fans on here feel the need to tear him down?

Coaches are pretty much fair game because they get paid a lot of money to put the kids in a position to succeed. It isn't right to hold individual players up for criticism and ridicule when they are out there working their tails off to do the job. Now if they are spending too much time on 6th, it might be a different story.

  • Players are not above reproach. What is the value of a Texas degree they receive??

Most posters are not ridiculous with their critique. Bottom line it is the nature of a top 10 D1 program. We are here to discuss.
