Tommy Nicholson wants aggression at the plate, runs to score

  • Willt said...

Try recruiting East Texas where schools like Arkansas, A & M, & Baylor
have been getting their players. Good players make good coaches.
Most Texas kids grow up dreaming of playing for Texas. But remember
you have to introduce yourself to them before they will sign. Try coming
out to one of your camps and see who might be camping on the 40
acres. The evaluation of players the last couple of years has been
awful. I could have done better.

Talent eval has been bad the last couple years, eh?

  • Glad to hear this about the hitting philosophy. Wilt made some good points also about East Texas. The hitting approach the past few years of regularly taking the first pitch (regardless of if it's a fast ball down the middle) has been pretty pathetic. It's common knowledge that certain hitters will just stand there hoping for a base on balls.
Combine that with seeing hitters bailing out of the box as they swat at the ball indicated to me a long time ago that the hitting coach was not doing his job.
I like the attitude of being aggressive and hopefully not so predictable and passive at the plate. Hopefully Nicholson will actually teach hitting technique which has been sorely lacking, and hopefully we will start getting more high caliber players that can hit with power. It doesn't have to be home runs, but driving the ball into the gap will work just fine.

Is it too early to ask if Nicholson has had a positive affect on recruiting yet?

Way too early, but I think he'll bring a new energy to it for sure. We'll see in a few weeks after the showcases are finished.

I know he's a hard worker. When Augie called him to tell him he got the job he was on the road recruiting for Sac State.

I wonder how much of an impact he will have on our overall offensive philosophy. Will Augie move into the 21st century and eschew his obsession with small ball? That would be nice. I'm hoping that's what he means by "aggressiveness."

I like that he plans on being more hands on, I'm not sure how Tommy was in this regard but we have had several hitters come through here with major issues with their swing that never changed for the better (Etier for one).

My question is how many scholarships will Augie give him for bats

  • Actually the trend is in small ball direction more than big inning baseball.

  • If we can improve our approach at the plate, maybe Augie lets guys keep their bat in their hand a little more often. But the minute he bunts a guy over from first with nobody out, I'll know there really isn't going to be a change.

I personally wouldn't count on Augie changing his style at this point. He has had a lot of success un the past with that approach.

This is in no way meant to look or sound like that I am jumping on you! So bare with me as I get whats in my head out...

I think there are a lot of misconception on what Augie tries to do. He adjusts his philosophy to what type of team that he has. Lets go back to the '09 season and the '10 season. Those two seasons he probably had one of if not his better offensive minded team.

I am talking about an overall minded team. Yes the bats have changed but there are also evidence of other key situations.

I am talking about hitting over 100 doubles and also having 104 and 75 Sac Hit receptively in those two seasons.

In 2012 86 doubles and 67 Sac Hits.

I really believe that when People look at what Augie tries to do, they immediately jump to the conclusion that he is going to bunt. Very seldom when Weiss and Walsh came up to the plate did they bunt. He wanted those guys to swing away.

I'm actually in complete agreement with you on that. He's proven that he will let guys swing the bats if they are capable. My issue remains though with that certain strategy of bunting.......and I've watched our guys take so many first strike pitches the last five years that I can't help but think they are being told to. When your guys struggle to begin with and then they're hamstrung on top of that, it becomes much tougher to hit.

  • How about taking a look at the type of baseball athlete recruited? Most of them are about 5'9" - 5"11" about 140 pounds. These guys are not exactly power hitters. I remember when Vanderbilt came to play here last fall. All their guys were 6'2"-6'4" 220-240 pounds. They crushed the ball and us! We're not even playing well defensively either. What is Nicholson's approach there especially with the infield? This program needs an overhaul...

I don't mind the bunting and small ball, because executed regularly it is very successful.
What has been nauseating for the past two years is watching a pattern of hitters taking the first pitch like clockwork, and it's often the best pitch they will see. Other teams know that, keeping us behind the count time after time. That is annoyance #1 for me.
Watching hitters overstride or stepping away with the front foot as they swing, or having a batter move his back foot backward just as the pitch is about to be delivered for a full season with no correction whatsoever was mind bottling as aggies would say. How about laying a bat behind the hitters heels during batting practice to discourage that habit? It works as an old fashioned way of fixing the problem. When you fall on your butt a few times from stepping on the bat you eventually stop doing it.
