Time Warner Interested in Purchasing the Longhorn Network from

  • interesting, as the other provider for my area is TWC. Have been growing tired of FiOS, so that might prompt me to switch.

That doesn't do anything. Honestly. That's what they were banking on. It happened and it didn't help their cause. If something like this happens,we'll forecast it,staff accordingly and it's smooth sailing. In reality, not as many people want the LHN as much as folks want say,FOX or ESPN. We get busy when we're in contract disputes and the networks produce a crawling message on the screen telling them to call and that DIRECTV is "trying to take the channel away". But we only get like that if it's a big time provider. We don't cave to demands because of it. Trust me. They ask for unreasonable prices and bank on another provider picking it up and giving consumers another option, which puts a per subscriber fee in their pocket. That's not happening. It usually has a domino effect pricing wise and then monthly rates increase. DIRECTV doesn't cave on stuff like that so we don't have to raise rates. We have an industry low 4% annual increase compared to DISH and others' 10% because we are willing to take a stand for whats right and we have been successful in 99% of all negotiations.

The only way this gets done is for ESPN to come off its high horse and negotiate. If one of the big 3 or 4 agrees and offers LHN, then that puts some added pressure on the others to do the same. Grande and FIOS isn't going to do it and neither is Texas and ESPN putting more games on LHN, when they know a majority of Texas fans don't have it. Taking that action is only going to piss people off more and I’m not sure that’s something the University wants to start playing games with. The ball is clearly in ESPN’s hands and the cable companies know it and there not going to change their stance because frankly they don’t have too. Once the geniuses at ESPN get that, then and only then will we have some movement on this.

    That was my point exactly.

Yeah, I know...guess I should have said I agreed with you. This is really all smoke and mirrors stuff being played out by ESPN before they come to some realization (probably as a result of financial loss) that there going to have to come back to the table and make some concessions for this to work. I don't think the University is willing to put more games (football) on the network. I know they made that announcement about the possibility of adding more games, but my guess is Dodds did that to try and stir the pot for ESPN. DeLoss has to know that without any movement by the cable companies, the decision to add more games would be a greater PR disaster for the University. I just don't think he really wants to go down that road despite some of his quotes on the subject. I hope I'm right, because if they end up adding more football games to LHN this year with the same coverage opportunity in place, you can bet the outcry and anger from the fans is going to hit the "beyond pissed off meter" and I'll be one of them. I can only imagine some of the "behind the scenes" conversations that are taking place between the University and ESPN execs. The university may be getting its $$$ from this deal, but they run the risk of taking a huge hit in the image department and potentially in the pocket book if this doesn't get resolved one way or another soon. You start taking away games from fans to play "games" with cable companies and that could backfire pretty quickly.
