Tiger Woods Sharpening His Stick for Augusta-76th W, 5th-12 Mths

While this is a great point, Nicklaus also played more tournaments. If Tiger didn't cherry pick so much his percentage wouldn't be nearly as good.

But his cherry picked tourneys are against the best fields. He didn't cherry pick the tourney in Puerto Rico.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

Agree to disagree on that one.

Tiger has traditionally played the best events on tour - best fields.

    Of his 76 wins...

    14 majors
17 WGC's (as good of fields as anything)
    1 Players Championship
    7 - Buick/Torrey
    7 - Bay Hill/Arnold Palmer
    3-4 Memorial's/Jack's tourney
1 - Byron Nelson when Byron was alive and field was strong

    Etc...

I think one could actually argue the other way...

Had Tiger played more, the lesser field tournaments, he would likely have 90+ wins already.

Of course, that wasn't possible. Healthy, time missed due to multiple knee surgeries and trying to stay healthy...and playing around the world for large $$$

If and only when Tiger gets to 18, Jack remains Number 1!!! Personally, I think tiger will win 1 or 2 more majors.

It may end up an interesting discussion with the Jack era fans siding one way, and the Tiger/current era guys going the other.

I'm not sure Tiger wins another major. Time will tell.

He could well end up with 90+ tour wins (maybe even 100 if healthy until 42-43), 120'ish world wide and shatter every other record in golf...except most majors.

    Fun times in golf.

  • Tiger certainly plays the best fields. But he also plays courses that fit his game. Despite announcer hyperbole to the contrary, golfers don't battle each other. They battle the course.

I think if tiger played more tournaments, he'd certainly have more wins. But his percentage would not be so ridiculously high.

  • As a Jack era fan, I had trouble at first embracing the genius game of Tiger. I prefer to recognize them both as some of the best ever. Jack had more great players in his timeframe while Tiger has far more depth in his group. It is interesting that Tiger wins so many multiples on certain courses. 7 on Arnie, 4 on jack, 4 on Augusta.

while recognizing Tiger's accomplishments, it is also interesting to look at golf now and "post Tiger". Is anybody playing the tour regularly have more majors than Phil with four? golf might get real boring without those two. We need some new rivalries and get some of these youngsters to start stacking up some majors themselves.

Damn you Tiger for being smart and beating the best field for most of your wins

Ernie Els just won his 4th at the age of 42 or 43.

Additionally, Phil Mickelson won his most recent Major just shy of 40. Nicklaus won his last major at 46. Addressing the notion that Tiger might not win another major, I'd argue that the window is wide open if you consider the contention of equal or lesser talent beyond Tiger's current age of 37. He's by far the best ball striker of his generation, and he has shown a knack for evolving his swing as his body breaks down. No reason to believe he won't get closer to Jack.

If he ballparks 16 majors while smashing the all-time wins record, as has been mentioned, the debate for GOAT will get really interesting. And if he breaks that golden number, it's end of discussion.

  • I met Nicklaus on the driving range at my course several years ago. There were only two of us on the range when he and Gary Player showed up to practice; so was able to visit with them for a while. I thought Nicklaus was a prick. Player on the flip side was incredibly nice. At one point he told Jack that it was time for him to go out to pasture. So I'm pulling for Tiger to take the record. My wife of course hopes he never wins another event.

thanks John, forgot about big Ern. I believe Tiger will win a few more majors before he is done. GOAT will always be a debateable subject.

  • Most of those old guys need to be put out to pasture. How many times can we go over how Arnie's Army was mean to Jack? They can keep Lee Trevino around though, that's a character worth talking to.

  • One thing to watch with Tiger is how long his surgically repaired knee holds up. He is starting to put a tremendous amount of stress on his left knee during his follow through again. I won't be surprised if it starts giving him problems again within a couple of years.

  • If Watson hadn't over clubbed on the 18th at Turnberry, he would have won the British Open at the age of 58.

Actually they are out to pasture. arnie is 82, jack 72, gary player around 75, trevino around 70. As far as Arnie's Army and Jack, mostly true. Before that Hogan despised Arnie and his "common man" persona. I am sure Trevino gots lots of hate , being the only Hispanic on tour. all different times in history and that's what makes it fun to discuss as far as GOAT.

That was one of the most depressing things I'd ever seen.

    El General

  • I don't think he could've struck a better iron shot. When he hit that he had to immediately feel as though he'd won. Think about all the wayward shots a guy has hit in that situation and the 58 yr old man rifles it right at the stick. Heartbreaking to watch.
