Guys,
I've spent the last few weeks and even months discussing this topic.
I've also spent a considerable amount of time discussing the position with various people within the college football industry, that means some of the best and brightest doing this very thing today at other institutions.
I've also discussed this topic with members of the Texas athletic department.
Texas is moving into a new realm on many levels with this hire.
*****
Here's what I am told that Texas wants from the position - the order is irrelevant because they want it all:
* Early identification of recruits; thorough evaluation of recruits across multiple recruiting classes
* Improved camps; both attendance of recruits across various classes and increased value obtained from them
* Improved communication tools used by coaches with recruits (think Skype/FaceTime)
*****
I am also told that you can expect Texas to have different people responsible for different aspects of the recruiting/camp program and some of them will roll up to the director of player personnel.
*****
Here's the bottom line:
I think Mack Brown made the first right move today. He's got it started.
Now, how does he keep it going, who does he add to his staff that helps with identification, what about camps and how does the personnel director integrate successfully with his coaching staff? Those are key questions that remain to be answered.
*****
I am told multiple members of the staff discussed this hire with Brown and that Brown and the staff came to a consensus on what they wanted out of the position.
Again, this is the start. I think the Horns took a step forward today.

Bobby - do you expect Mack to bring others from outside of the state, or start filling the staff with in-state connections? Meaning, do you see somebody from AZ or Cali on the staff that may have connections out west?
& then possibly someone to cover each of HOU, DFW, West Texas, etc?

Bobby, will these new hires' input for a given recruit cease once the LOI is signed or will they also play a role in player development? I still feel that Texas has had good luck bringing in quality talent but has not been as successful in the player development. We need to fill this gap.
