Guys there is more to Alabama and the SEC success then meets the eye. The game could not have been more clear, the Alabama defensive front seven dominated the line of scrimmage. The Alabama offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage. You can go on all day about explosive plays but nothing trumps dominate line play. The SEC has consistently had the best line play over the last decade. The amount of NFL talent on the line that has rolled through, Alabama, Florida, and LSU is ridiculous. The other big difference is the cheating. I realize that lots of really good kids go to these schools because they want to, some of them are going because they are paid to.
While Deloss and Mack are around, we won't see Texas pay for players. That doesn't mean Texas can't have a great team, it just makes winning a championship that much harder. On the offensive side of the ball, Texas is building a SEC line. Riser, Estelle, Perkins, James, Raulerson are exactly the kind of kids Texas needs to push the ball against anyone in the country. Mack has been moving Texas into being more physical, and he is clearly moving Texas towards a run first spread power/option attack. Major is a great guy to put it in place and I don't think there is a better offense available for college football.
On the defensive side of the ball, we aren't getting the kind of lineman and linebackers that we saw from Alabama last night. While I would like to have them I don't know that you need that style to win. Saban has been very smart recruiting really big and physical kids to play in a physical league. For better or worse, Texas is in a spread league and needs to focus on a defense designed to stop the spread. Texas needs somewhat smaller/quicker defensive lineman to pressure the quarterback. Texas also needs depth so that they can keep the line fresh and platoon them in. At linebacker I really think Texas needs to focus more on guys like Jenkins or Nelson (OU). Speed guys that can help in coverage and that have the wheels to get after the quarterback via the blitz.
I am convinced that the offensive brain trust at Texas is going in the right direction. They are evaluating and recruiting the right kind of kids in order to be successful. I am not convinced that our defensive staff is doing the same thing.

Good post and I agree with all your points. The key for me to beat Alabama is to have an explosive offense that turns them into a passing team. I think that the 2009 Texas defense would have been turned loose on McElroy if Texas had been able to go up a couple of scores. Instead they got shredded by the run.
The Aggy game with Alabama and the Kansas State games with Baylor and Oregon come to mind as really good teams getting down early and not having the firepower to come back.

There's no reason we can't do what Alabama is doing!!!!!
