Yes there is. It's called dominating the line of scrimmage and we are nowhere near what you saw tonight from Bama.

    Roll Tide.

  • It's not just Mack. Bama has won how many titles in their history? We've got how many real ones? Not that UPI pre bowl stuff. We tend to think we should be doing this or that but the fact is we really never have had multiple titles or titles stacked anywhere close together. It would take a special coach to do what Bama is doing. Bama won't be doing what Bama does in a few years but while he's there they will be dominant.

We need an Offensive Line and a new DC and I actually agree with you in a strange way.

We need a HC who is more concerned about being tuff than talking tuff.
You see that would frighten Mack....

  • Texas needs more gray-shirting and secret coaches to do what Alabama does. ;)

  • Guys there is more to Alabama and the SEC success then meets the eye. The game could not have been more clear, the Alabama defensive front seven dominated the line of scrimmage. The Alabama offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage. You can go on all day about explosive plays but nothing trumps dominate line play. The SEC has consistently had the best line play over the last decade. The amount of NFL talent on the line that has rolled through, Alabama, Florida, and LSU is ridiculous. The other big difference is the cheating. I realize that lots of really good kids go to these schools because they want to, some of them are going because they are paid to.

While Deloss and Mack are around, we won't see Texas pay for players. That doesn't mean Texas can't have a great team, it just makes winning a championship that much harder. On the offensive side of the ball, Texas is building a SEC line. Riser, Estelle, Perkins, James, Raulerson are exactly the kind of kids Texas needs to push the ball against anyone in the country. Mack has been moving Texas into being more physical, and he is clearly moving Texas towards a run first spread power/option attack. Major is a great guy to put it in place and I don't think there is a better offense available for college football.

On the defensive side of the ball, we aren't getting the kind of lineman and linebackers that we saw from Alabama last night. While I would like to have them I don't know that you need that style to win. Saban has been very smart recruiting really big and physical kids to play in a physical league. For better or worse, Texas is in a spread league and needs to focus on a defense designed to stop the spread. Texas needs somewhat smaller/quicker defensive lineman to pressure the quarterback. Texas also needs depth so that they can keep the line fresh and platoon them in. At linebacker I really think Texas needs to focus more on guys like Jenkins or Nelson (OU). Speed guys that can help in coverage and that have the wheels to get after the quarterback via the blitz.

I am convinced that the offensive brain trust at Texas is going in the right direction. They are evaluating and recruiting the right kind of kids in order to be successful. I am not convinced that our defensive staff is doing the same thing.

  • So Alabama pays their players, I would like to see any shred of evidence that makes this statement fact. I'm not doubting the OP, I appreciate his posts and insight. I just think if this was going on there would be more information out there.

Good post and I agree with all your points. The key for me to beat Alabama is to have an explosive offense that turns them into a passing team. I think that the 2009 Texas defense would have been turned loose on McElroy if Texas had been able to go up a couple of scores. Instead they got shredded by the run.

The Aggy game with Alabama and the Kansas State games with Baylor and Oregon come to mind as really good teams getting down early and not having the firepower to come back.

School Violations Occurred Probation Seasons Bowl Ban Seasons
    Alabama 1989-1990, 1993 1995 - 1996 2 1995 1
    Alabama 1995-2000 2002 - 2006 5 2002 - 2003 2
    Alabama 2005-2007 2009 - 2011 3 - 0

I went to high school with a coach at LSU, even they complain about Alabama. If the NCAA had subpoena power, I think getting the proof would be easy. As it is, you really have to be in contact with the kids, or the high school coaches or the college coaches to know who is doing what. It isn't a secret that as a conference (especially football) that the SEC has little regard for rules (recruiting or otherwise). I know another coach who worked for directly for Saban. He told me that there are rules in place for how many hours a team can practice during the week (I think 20). I was told that it was at least double that under Saban. The NCAA doesn't have time card monitors. The number of hours at practice is a self reported issue, Do you think some assistant AD of football operations is going to tell on Nick?

I don't know what they do but as Mussberger said last nignt, they bring in 5 NO 1 draft picks every year. Have so much talent, they really get by without a great QB. Will say this, the SEC Motto is " if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.

Bama did have a first and goal from the five with less than 2 min to go. The most amazing thing to me about that game was the Aggies stopped them.I thought Bama would just ram it in like the did last night. You are right tho, Aggies had them down multiple scores before they woke up. Took them out of their power game.
