The ones that got away....

  • Every year there seems to be a kid that Texas looks at and doesn't offer for whatever reason. This year it is killing me that Texas didn't offer Deon Hollins. He is far and away the most dominating pass rusher in the city of Houston. I have seen several people say that he reminds them of Von Miller, I actually could see him going in the direction of Dwight Freeny. Either way, I wish he had gotten an offer.

  • QB Andrew Luck, future OLB/DE MIke Mitchell, RB's Brandon Williams or Herschel Sims, ATH Jamal Turner are the first ones to come to mind

This is the correct answer and I doubt we are looking at 5-7 and 8-5 with even above average O-line play.

I cannot remember if he had an offer but I wanted Texas to get Luke Joeckel at the time. Probably would have been a longshot. Last year I wished Texas would have offered Corey Coleman especially after Thomas Johnson decommitted.

  • RGIII
    Andrew Luck
    Kendall Wright
    Von Miller

Those are the 4 big ones imo. That list could grow in a few years after seeing how guys like Trey Williams and Corey Coleman perform relative to the kids we took over them, but that's a conversation for a later day.

  • Momma always said "There's no use in crying over spilt milk, Forrest". There are some guys like RGIII and Luck that would have made Texas a different team in 2010 and 2011. But recruiting is a crap shoot and hindsight makes everyone look like a genius.

  • This year, for me, it's Robbie Rhodes. Wish we would have locked him up early. Love his film, athleticism, and upside.

I agree. That kid is going to be really good.

  • I just have this sick feeling that we're going to regret not going after Mike Mitchell. I don't really have any strong basis for it, other than his ridiculous athleticism... just a feeling.

This staff, unlike the previous crew, has shown that a recruitment isn't over until the fax is received. I don't believe they've conceded Rhodes yet.

  • I think the years of missed evaluations on the OL that Stacy Searels is going to need another class (maybe two) to fix.

Watching a guy like Cyril Richardson develop into an all-conference player at Baylor or having a guy like LeRaven Clark getting set to start at Texas Tech when was right down the street are mistakes that can't be repeated.

I also believe this staff goes out and evaluates the recruits and does not just read about how many stars they have or what thier high school coach says about them.

Agree with luck but was never in play as he was pretty add ament on playing for Stanford from the get go. Brandon Williams and Herschel Sims same class as Malcolm Brown so I think we got the better of the three. (Williams already transferred as well as Sims) Now Mitchell on the other hand is a to be determined situation although I would love to see him in Burnt Orange.

The only thing that matters is that we never offered Luck. I don't care what him or his dad have said since, we would have had a shot had we put ourselves into the game. He very well could have ended up at Stanford regardless, but you're shitting yourself if you don't think he would have at least listened.

This was another case of Mack and Co going after the low hanging fruit in Gilbert and calling it a day rather than trying to cover all of their bases.

Or...it could be a case of Mack Brown and Greg Davis actually believing that GG was a better fit for the Texas offense than Andrew Luck.

  • Coleman - last year
Dixon - Baylor DB - 2 years ago (I think)
Rhodes - Recruiting not done yet
    Massington - moved on

That is probably true but I believe you take a QB every year. To not take a QB that year really ended up hurting Texas.

Your post is spot on. Texas never had a shot at Luck. He was quoted as saying he was set on Stanford after Oliver took him there as a boy and he met Bill Walsh. Missing on Brandon Williams and Herschel Sims was a blessing in my opinion. Mitchell is frustrating but I think its more about his dad being a headstrong guy. Mitchell's comment after winning The Opening was that he wanted to make his dad happy. I thought that was kind of sad that he has to live up to his dad's expectations.
