The Worst MLB Team

Astros should accumlate three #1 overall picks in a row. If they buy some good free agents when these guys make the majors they could be pretty good in a few years. I agree that this is correct route. Drayton's plan to put together a .team who he thought he could fool the fans into believeing had a chance by trading the farm system for mediocre players set back the franchise back ten years. I said it would at the time it was happening as well it was so ridiculous.

It was ridiculous for anybody who knew anything about sports.....................be careful what you post about the drayton! The alphabet T-Ball boys think drayton was a great owner! (35 just agrees with anything they post) But to be fair being a Houston pro sports fan it is hard to identify a "good" owner because they've never had one..............organizations like the Rangers and Spurs continue to be their "daddy"!

I am an Astros fan and could not be happier. I feel bad for the past 5 seasons when Drayton allowed our team to be systematically destroyed. New management has a clue and is executing a plan. I'll take the lean years in lieu of having a light at the end of the tunnel.

This. Dayton was the bad owner and Purpura was the bad GM. Let them let their plan take effect. It will be bad for two more years though. Then they will have a good young roster that had time to develop and lots of money to spend on free agents. Article misses the point IMO.

So what's your beef with the current ownership? That they moved the team to the AL? Your were educated on how that went down on the last Astros thread, so what else? How would you like the current front office to operate differently?

Again, it sucks for Astros fans wanting something to watch this season and next, but every single move they make should be around getting the farm system back up and running.

............I repeat you have a very short memory. But one more time I will recap:

    -Change of leagues

-Attempting to change the name (until the outcry was so bad he stopped)

-Going cheap on the manager and firing the prior manager while never giving him a chance to win

-Firing multiple front office people not because they were not doing their job but because it was change

Bottom line crane wiped out 50 years of history (and yes some tradition) to make a buck................

.................now you list what you think he has done correctly

For a long time....until the astros get a good owner and GM they will continue to lose 100 games. I'm concerned about the Rangers and the turmoil inside the front office. I just hope if they get off to a slow start they don't have a knee jerk reaction and fire Wash.....the good thing about the Rangers (unlike the astros) they've drafted well and have a lot of good prospects in their farm system. Since drayton fired his only good employee in 2004 the astros have been the laughing stock of professional sports with their player decisions.

the best thing the rangers could ever do is fire that ignorant, coke sniffing manager...he's a joke

Hayden Christensen - to merely call him wooden is an affront to puppets everywhere...

    -bringing back blue and orange

    -allowing food/drinks in the stadium

-hiring a young, fiery manager to motivate these young kids

-not wasting money on many past-their-prime free agents

Blaming the current regime for the state of the Astros is an easy, lazy take that frankly makes me question your baseball intelligence.

I get that you (incorrectly) blame Crane for the AL move, which in turn clouds your judgement for everything else. (I will admit that the billboard in LF is a monstrosity that I hate and hope he gets rid of soon.)

Otherwise, he has done a fine job. There's a reason that everyone who knows what they are talking about are excited about the Astros future, and the only people who are ragging on them are columnists who need a click.

They're going to be terrible this year. That's a given. But their future is as potentially bright as anyone in the league.

Yeah, nothing to see here. Really just more of the same vapor.

League change wasn't Crane's choice or preference. Was wither switch at a discount or don't get the team.

He didn't attempt to change the name, he merely did research and considered a change, which any smart businessman would do.

The manager today likely won't be the manager when the team is competitive again, so who cares? Maybe Porter does a great job and the team is competitive soon or maybe he's the stop gap before Biggio or Ausmus get the call. Either way, why would you care what happened to the last manager of the worst team in the league?

The old front office was a washed up, worn out, out of date, not in touch with reality group of blue hairs. They all needed to go, even the ones who had been there the longest.

I sincerely hope you're either younger than age 18 or older than age 70. Otherwise, your takes on the matter couldn't be any less relevant.

I see it took a few days for you to check with the Alphabet Boys and I am sorry you have a difficult time comprehending posts...................enjoy continuing to follow a loser. Its going a long wait until they can compete with the Rangers, Angles and A's................

  • Seeing these quoted posts from austinr just reminds me of how great the ignore feature is on this site, and how I wish some of you guys wouldn't quote consistent assbaggery in responses. The notion that the AL move is on Crane speaks to simple ignorance, but the claim that the new ownership is already worse than everyone in professional sports other than the Cowboys points to profound stupidity. Just let the guy shout into the ether on nonsense like that.

It's not impossible to spend money and still draft for the future, but Drayton wasted money in FA and refused to put money into scouting and development.

When he bought the Astros they were the pioneers in Venezuela, i.e. Richard Hidalgo, Bobby Abreu, Johan Santana, Freddy Garcia, and Jose Guillen. By the time he sold them, the Astros were basically non-existent in Central and South America.

They would draft players the could sign to slot deals instead of drafting quality players and going over-slot to sign them, like taking Mier in 2009 4 picks before Mike Trout went to the Angels. Mier may still be a major leaguer but the Astros just over-drafted him with Correa and Fontana.

  • The Washington Nationals approach. . Be the worst in baseball for three years and stock-pile #1 picks. It can work. Moving the Astro's AAA franchise to the Woodlands makes sense as well. I don't follow the Astro's closely enough to know how close they actually are. Bill James saying they will win 95 games in five years is pure sillyness though. They are just as likely to still be a .500 team at best. There are as many high first round busts in baseball as their are hits. My personal hope is that the Astro's and Rangers are battling for the A.L. championship yearly starting in 2015. Truly a win/win. Unfortunately, even with the massive spending mistakes that the Angels have made with Pujols and Hamilton, they have so much money that they can survive and still be a factor. The new deals that the Angels and Dodgers have signed put them close to Yankee territory. They can afford a salary of $160-180 mil. The Rangers are capped at $120-130. I don't know the Astro's money, but I suspect they are in Ranger territory best case.

The Angels have a good starting staff wrapped up for the next four years. They will sign Trout to a six year deal for less than $15 million a year. That's one of the top five players in the league. I hate all things L.A., so I wish they would go away; but they aren't.

It would make more sense to move the AAA team to Corpus and let the Skeeters become the AA team. Another professional team in the Houston area would saturate the market I think.

This season will be known as the Rodon draft.

  • I'm going to be serious for a brief moment, then get silly. This is just my opionion, so don't take any off it seriously.

I grew up in Corpus. I don't think its large enough to support a AAA club. It has a population of around 300K wet-backs and Bierce. I'm assuming that Bierce isn't a wet. I guess if you include all of the surrounding counties, it goes up to 400K. I think the over-whelming majority of AAA franchises are in cities with 750K plus population bases. OKC has a population base of 1.3 million for comparison. Round Rock has 1.5 million. Maybe the fracking explosion in south Texas has caused a population and money boom; but the Corpus I remember is a marginal AAA franchise. .

Houston has a trillion people the last time I checked. More people than all of China combined. There are at least a billion people living in the Woodlands-Huntsville corridor; which with Houston traffic is a long day's drive away from downtown Houston during rush hour, when most games are played. I think a AAA team in that wealthy corridor will flourish without impacting the downtown stadium's draw. The Ranger's Frisco AA franchise is remarkably successful without impacting the big league team. I think it actually builds interest with people watching the minor leagues moving up the franchise. But I could be wrong.

The Rangers scored the plum AAA franchise when they had Nolan move the Round Rock franchise to be their AAA club. The only other Texas city which can support a AAA franchise is San Antonio. My perspective, if you want to move the OKC franchise to Texas and don't want it in Houston, keep the AA franchise where it is and try to convince San Antonio to build you a new stadium in the north side of the city.
