The Worst MLB Team

  • The worst ownership and managed team in professional sports.........outside of jerrysboys.

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Houston Astros have a plan. It sounds complicated, but isn't. Their smart guys seek smart ways to get good players or to make their own players better, and one day we'll find out whether the plan worked. That's about it.

In the meantime, a 107-loss team will be fed to the American League in general and the American League West in particular, places where plans often – but not always – arrive at media conferences in black limousines.

The observation has been made that the Astros will pay their full roster about what the New York Yankees will pay Alex Rodriguez, which sounds inequitable. In reality, however, the Astros and Rodriguez are likely to have similar effects on their division races in 2013. Manager Bo Porter says just about every player in uniform has a shot at cracking the Astros' big league roster. …

The Astros that will cover the ground between what the organization is now and what it will be in general manager Jeff Luhnow's plan are, granted, no-names. I use the term because Luhnow did the other day before an exhibition

  • I feel bad for Astros fans ( of which I am. They are my #2 team behind the Rangers). The team is gonna be painful to watch I'm afraid.

For a long time....until the astros get a good owner and GM they will continue to lose 100 games. I'm concerned about the Rangers and the turmoil inside the front office. I just hope if they get off to a slow start they don't have a knee jerk reaction and fire Wash.....the good thing about the Rangers (unlike the astros) they've drafted well and have a lot of good prospects in their farm system. Since drayton fired his only good employee in 2004 the astros have been the laughing stock of professional sports with their player decisions.

  • It's just sad what has become of the Astros. I can barely even name more than a few players.

This team isn't even a MLB team anymore. More like a AAA team & that might be insulting to other AAA teams.

For at least the next 5 years or maybe more, this team will lose 100+ games each season.

Did I mention I really hate the Astros moving to the AL! This ownership group is making no attempt to be competitive on the field. They are going with a bargain basement roster with hopes the kids will develop. In the interim, management wants us to pay to watch this product when everyone knows they have zero chance to compete against anyone.

  • I would give the new ownership a couple of years before making judgements. Drayton left a decimated farm system and overpriced players past their primes. Management is doing the right thing in rebuilding the farm system. You're only as strong as your minor league system.

Right now it sucks to be a fan of the Stros. If they lose under 100, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I am an Astros fan and could not be happier. I feel bad for the past 5 seasons when Drayton allowed our team to be systematically destroyed. New management has a clue and is executing a plan. I'll take the lean years in lieu of having a light at the end of the tunnel.

  • At the #SABR convention Bill James just praised the hell out of the Astros strategy. He said, ""No question, in 5 years they'll be winning 95 games a year."

    Basically, BOOM.

It's a tossup who austinr hates more - Jim Crane, me, or NLeininger. He's blinded by that hate when it comes to the Astros. Also, they fired him a long time ago.

  • I find myself following the minor league affiliates more than ever since I'm firmly in the Luhnow camp. He helped make St. Louis the top system in baseball and the improvements already evident on the Houston farm are buying the big league team a couple of years from me. I like the idea of being competitive happening around 2015 when the Rangers and Angels are either re-stocking with prospects or dreading aging veterans finishing out long-term deals.

Comical...I am still cleaning my monitor. Maybe if the move the team to fantasy land.

There was a rumor going around the Astros writers/bloggers yesterday about moving the AAA team to The Woodlands. That would be awesome.

Yessir. It is the only way to build for the long haul. You can't put lipstick on a pig, I believe the saying goes, which is what Drayton did for far too long. Build from the draft, and supplement with smart FA signings when they make sense.

Rebuilding through the farm system is a good idea, and easier on the wallet for the owners no doubt. There will be some lean, depressing years but if they stick to the plan, it can work.

I think the new ownership and GM have done a pretty good job of informing the fanbase of the plan and timetable. For me, that makes it much easier to trust them and not lose interest. I feel like they have a solid plan and are working to execute it at all times.

  • Hopefully having the 1.1 pick in 3 consecutive drafts will yield high end talent. The way Luhnow managed the draft last year was simply masterful.

Before you compare Jerry Jones with Jim Crane, consider 2 things. The Astros have a GM and I've yet to see Crane go from his luxury box down to the dugout.

  • My dad and I bought a 7 game mini-pack for this season. Excited to see the new teams, the DH, and Bo Porter managing.

It's going to be another 1-2 seasons of below .500 play but most personnel experts have given the Astros rave reviews for their decisions under the Luhnow era.

I hope the Astros can add some impact arms to the system this year. I would like to get Appel this year and Rondon next year. There you have your potential 1-2 combo for the next 15 years.

There were lean and depressing years when the salary was over $100M. Spending to contend is a failed methodology in today's baseball.

Too many Sabr-smart GMs that understand how to win a lot of games on a $60-80M payroll.

    NLeininger

  • Astros should accumlate three #1 overall picks in a row. If they buy some good free agents when these guys make the majors they could be pretty good in a few years. I agree that this is correct route. Drayton's plan to put together a .team who he thought he could fool the fans into believeing had a chance by trading the farm system for mediocre players set back the franchise back ten years. I said it would at the time it was happening as well it was so ridiculous.
