The Notre Dame pendulum

  • So would ND eliminate themselves from any conf champ game consideration? How could they be considered any type of conf champ playing 3-4 games?

They're not committing to play a conference football schedule.

  • I just don't understand what Louisville brings to the equation. FSU I get. Ga Tech I get. Va Tech I get. Hell, even Miami I get (although I understand the concerns with Miami with the powers that be).

Louisville is a 3rd or 4th tier team in football. And that is what this about- a football land grab. Why not go get FSU, Miami, Ga Tech, Clemson/Va Tech and call it a day with 14 teams? Notre Dame will not be giving up its independence and waiting around for them to come around could be disastrous!

If that is the case, I say add FSU and sit at 11 for 2013 and make sure that no better options become available. I would hate to take the 'ville just because they get us to 12. I'd rather wait on GTech of see if someone like UNC or a team in the SEC becomes available after FSU joins and the conference establishes an arrangement with the Domers. If those dominoes fall, the scope and stature of teams willing to consider the Big XII might markedly increase.

I would think FSU wants a regional partner before they move

If that's the way Notre Dame wants it, I say adios.

They are not the big cock on the block anymore. They are nothing more than a bunch of has-beens with a lot of TV sets.

Join the Big 12 completely or take a hike.

Just my opinion. I'd tell 'em to get lost. I don't see where they dictate any terms around here.

Their football team isn't the big you know what. But their television market certainly is mighty serviceable in size.

  • They should've just taken FSU and Clemson back when they had the chance. Great match for the Big 12.

  • I think Georgia Tech academics is a long term sweetner for Notre Dame and the Atlanta market is a full time sweetner for the broadcast partners.

Louisville must be in play as a concession to OU based on relationship with OU prez and Kentucky congressman?

WVU fans are at near outrage at the idea of having ND fail to commit to play everyone, and (they suspect) take a bowl bid, too. They've lived it, don't want it again. To me, Bobby's report pretty much confirms their suspicions.

I think that's not how it is working. The ND football games are simply a scheduling agreement . . . not a partial conference partner getting conference rights. That would have to be all in or all out which they are not going to do. They would still be independent for football . . . just with 4 (or whatever) Big XII teams on the schedule. They would not participate in the Championship game if there is one. They would not participate in the bowl alliances the conference has.

I could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

Get Hooked. I think this deal would be a huge bonanza . . . and would end up getting the LHN on all of our tvs.

  • Louisville brings cash rich program per discussion with DeLo$$ (money is the driving force as Bobby stated earlier)

  • As someone who lived in Atlanta for two years, I can say that it is a UGA city despite Georgia Tech being in town. I would guess it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 80%-90% bias toward Georgia amazingly (and this was of course purely my perception, I have nothing to base this on).

Lville would be better than Gtech. Especially 5-6 years from now.

    From an athletics standpoint, yes.

But from a financial standpoint, GT makes more sense... more eyeballs in the ATL mean more money. And Texas (and the rest of the BigXII) would much rather have a foot in the ATL recruiting area than Kentucky/Southern Indiana.

What do you think about Clemson's impact there?

You easily could be 100 percent right. However, to hear the WVU people tell it, ND did pretty much what it wanted with a similar arrangement, including grabbing bowls when it suited them.

Grew up in SEC country and I've been to Atlanta plenty of times, and I totally agree. UGA/SEC town despite Ga Tech being right there.

I'm not as anti-Louisville as others. I think they're continuing to pump money into that program and they're a program on the rise in my eyes. They also bring a very legitimate basketball team to the table, and though I know this is 99% about football, bringing in an up-and-coming football program and an established basketball program isn't that bad of a deal.

Notre Dame wants Texas or OU (or both) every year but only wants to rotate 1 or the other or both, plus another for 3 games.

That's where someone like Louisville or Georgia Tech become attractive as 12th team, not Clemson as originally thought. Given the landscape of college athletics, my bet would be on Louisville, not Ga Tech and not Clemson.

That first part about ND made my head hurt.

And Louisville does nothing for me.

I would say Clemson and Georgia Tech were close to the same popularity. I'd assume that Atlanta is the largest Clemson alum base in the country.

Lol. Wasn't exactly saying that but anyone who thinks just because ND has been down that they still are not the biggest brand in college football is kidding themselves. I know someone will bring up merchandise sales. That is not the whole story. It is bigger than that. The fact that Swarbrick has a seat at the bargaining table with all of the conference commissioners should tell you all you need to know.

I currently live in Atlanta and have for 9 years in October. I concur with your assessment.
