The Hookem.com Top 100

  • Jerry,
There seemed to be a pattern with Kennedy selections of tall receivers with good hands (Timmons, Harris, Terrell) , but not enough speed for separation. Does Onyegbule fall into this category?
Do you think Wyatt will place a little more emphasis on explosive ability?
Is Caleb Jones possibly in this category, although much higher on general skills?

  • If Wyatt's history holds I'd say it's a definite yes.

As for Onyegbule, he has very good athleticism but may spin to TE or even over to defense eventually. Never know but he is a very good athlete.

The Hookem.com staff has seen all of the state's top recruits. Here are the final rankings for the class of 2011.

    Gerry,

I was wondering if these rankings are based strictly on on-field performance and athletic upside or if you take into consideration mental makeup, family influence, academic issues and anything else that might effect a particular kids ability to succeed in college. I realize, of course, these other influences are harder to quantify but I was curious if they are taken into consideration at all.

Onyegbule is a better athlete than, say, Dan Buckner.

The book is still out on Timmons and I think Harris was actually a good eval. Bottom line is I give Onyegbule a chance to be a contributor somewhere because of his athletic ability and the fact that he'll do what he can to get the most out of his talent.

I don't think Cayleb Jones is in the category of a big guy who can't create separation. His burst continues to improve and he knows how to manipulate man coverage for a big split end. To me, Jones's ceiling is being a guy Alshon Jeffrey.

    Taylor Doyle, Chet Moss

Gerry, Bobby, and Jeff. If you had to throw a number (or range) on these two prospects what would it be?

I've always questioned Doyle, but Chet does seem like he's got the talent and desire to eventually become a solid to very good player for Texas.

They are if there is enough truly known about a guy to factor it in.

  • Miles O at #94?

Suprised Ash finished ahead of Walsh.

And I appreciate you designating guys as OT vs OG or CB vs S. DB/OL doesn't tell you much.

Did any of our commits not make the top 100?

Doesn't feel like with the the "committed to Texas" up there.

It's always fun to see if the the unheralded guys can come in and do something crazy, a la Colt McCoy.

  • Gerry,

Do you think Q. Diggs is a better prospect as a cornerback/safety or running back?

    Thanks.

  • At the end of the day 6 out of the top 10 prospects in the state is a very good haul for Texas considering all the turmoil this year. A 5-7 season and all the coaching changes could have easily killed this class, but that's a quality group of kids coming to Austin.

  • Here's some breakdowns of the Top 100.

    # Committed in Top 100:
    Texas - 18
    TCU - 12
    Oklahoma - 11
    Oklahoma St. - 11
    Texas Tech - 9
    A&M - 7
    Neraska - 4
    Uncommitted - 4
    Arkansas - 2
    Baylor - 2
    Houston - 2
    LSU - 2
    Michigan - 2
    Missouri - 2
    Notre Dame -2
    Utah - 2
    Arizona - 1
    Boise St. - 1
    Cal - 1
    CSU - 1
    Oregon - 1
    Rice - 1
    Stanford - 1
    UCLA - 1

    - Texas is again the class of the state with 18 commitments in top 100.

    - TCU did a great job with this years class. Really happy they stole Brandon Carter from OU.

    - I think Oklahoma St. did very well in state.

    - A&M is recruiting poorly everywhere except along the offensive line. Their class in state is bad and if their roll of the dice on 2012 doesn't work out then Sherm isn't going to be around much longer.

  • More breakdowns:

    # of prospects by region in Top 100:
    DFW - 34
    Houston - 29
    East Texas - 14
    San Antonio - 10
    Centex - 10
    West Texas - 6

    - As you would expect the majority of prospects in state come from the DFW, Houston and East Texas areas. This is where Texas' best recruiters should be and have not always been during Mack's tenure.

    - The Houston area had the most quality with 13 of the top 40 prospect coming from that area. DFW is next with 8.

Didn't realize Matt Wilson switched to Tech. That's a big pick up. Tech probably had a better OL haul than we did.

Hardly. Certainly not based on rankings.

Yes I do...............look at some of the state ratings(he is a 3 star everywhere but 247)............unless they've changed this is his highest rating..........BTW again I think Bobby, Jeff and Gary are better than most evaluating............just looks at GG ratings............(by the 3 wise mentongue.............how about that for a suck up!)

espn has Ash as a 4* as well. outside 247, rivals, and espn, what ratings with stars are left? So, rivals is the only one giving him a 3*.

I've always thought RB and slot receiver were his two most natural.

If he's going to be a DB, which he is, then it's safety/nickel for me. I think he plays CB out of necessity more than long term position right now at Texas. I think as a safety/nickel, he would be terrific.

Gerry said something yesterday in a telephone conversation that makes some sense to me.

He thinks Diggs could eventually become Gray's Blaine Bishop, which essentially means a rover nickel type that can play underneath and deep depending on situation.

We'll see but the big deal for Diggs is his overall speed, athleticism and the fact that he's naturally strong, which will allow him to play more as a true freshman IMO.
