The Fix Begins Today -- a lot for Manny Diaz to get done

The Texas defense had some dreadful moments in 2012. Manny Diaz has a lot to get accomplished this spring in order to get it turned around for 2013.

  • I just hope they react faster to red flags...thanx to some awesome work by 247 we heard about the defense struggling before the season began..then they brought that debacle of a defense into the regular season..

    TimmyLonghorn

  • I wonder if Manny would benefit from talking to Leon Fuller about how to create great defensive players?

  • Why won't he just play a little bit more base defense and play a bend and don't break style with having so many questions about his defense. Has he talked about that at all.

  • I think we will know early on whether this defense is going to improve. If we hear from Manny that players are still learning his scheme then Texas is screwed.

  • I hope I am wrong, but I do not see our d making improvement next year.

  • It blows my mind that someone as mind blowingly terrible at their job as Manny is, would be allowed to retain said job.

Don't worry....Mack put him on a PIP. We will be much better only allowing 2600 yards rushing

Slick, it can't get any worse. Can it?

  • 40/6=6.67 explosive running plays allowed per game!! Mind boggling for the talent we had in place

I think Mack and Manny are both on a short leash this year.

If it goes sour early or gets out of hand against Blow U, I suspect the backlash to be deafening.

Agree - the lead up to this game is going to be deafening, too. Maybe we can take this seriously for once. UT needs to come out ready to play smashmouth with some serious attitude.

But if the Horns blow it again, MB et al should be looking for the exit IMHO.

I remember a post before the 2012 season began by a 24/7 regular saying our D "could really be something special".

For the record, I agreed with him - I thought we would kick ass too.

    Let the down-votes commence.

  • I remain firmly entrenched in the " I'm from Missouri " category
And frankly , I have no patience for blown plays and assignments against the over matched early opponents on our schedule
The problems were apparent there last year
Those should be shut down games or get ready for another long year.

  • Spring training is exactly that.......SPRING TRAINING!! It will only tell us who is in the running to play where when the season starts. It won't tell us beans about whether this 2013 Longhorn team is really going to play like Texas Longhorns should, or will it be another year of misguided efforts by the highest paid coaches in college football with most of the best players in the state of Texas.

That question will not be answered until October 12 in Dallas against Oklahoma. Texas should come into that game 5-0 and with all the hype they get every year before Oklahoma.
There is nobody in the first 5 games that should even come close to playing football with the Longhorns. New Mexico St? Yeah, right. BYU? Really? Ole Miss....NOT! Kansas ST....not this year. Iowa St......Yawn!

Once again, we'll look like world beaters to start the season. But then comes that seasonal test that has been a complete failure by our $1000.00 an hour head coach the last 3 years. So drink the Spring training KoolAid Mack serves up, get ready for a special batch after two-a-days and those first 5 cup cakes we play. The season starts and this team will be defined by that October 12th Saturday in Dallas. End of story.

The fact that Manny is still on a leash is pathetic. Mack I get. He's got skins on the wall, and while I want him gone yesterday I understand why others are willing to give him another year. Manny has never proven shit as a DC other than the fact that he has absolutely no idea how to defend the spread. There's absolutely no logical reason why that man is still employed here, other than Mack being too big of a pussy to want to go through another coaching search.

  • I have absolutely no confidence in Manny turning around this defense. Last year he was at a loss on how to fix anything. The fact that he was not fired after the season is inexpicable. He is in over his head in defending the wide open offenses of Big 12 teams.

Any D that sports Mykelle Thompson in its backfield will be highly suspect.

It will be like playing their 11 with just 10 Horns on the field.

Anyway, I agree completely with the poster who said it's complete BS to read "we will know what kind of D we have on Saturday night after the Spring game" - we won't know squat until sometime in Sept.

The problem with the coaches is they believe their own BS. Because I believe it was poor coaching by the Oregon State staff to leave in a struggling QB, and finally an injury by the RB that helped the Horns. I don’t believe the defense played as good as he is saying.

My concern is that he does not know how to make real time adjustments in a game.

  • I really hate to do this, but I will defend Manny. I find it interesting he was a god 12 months ago and now he is a moron. He has had an excellent career up until 2012. Set records at MTSU. Great defense at MSU and his first yr at Texas. He can not coach, but most people are excited to see Jinkens this yr. The true freshmen that that seemed to get better with every game. Kendall Thompson clearly got better as the season wore on. Edmonds and Cobbs did not. Even the LB play showed mixed results. I know this is the Internet and everything is seen through a teenage girls eyes. It is either great or life altering bad, but I think the truth lies somewhere in between the 2011 Longhorn fans and the 2012 Texas Fan's opinion.

Agree. That was the single worst QB performance I've seen in a long time in Div 1.

And their only running threat went down early in the 3rd.

    That W was a gift.

Any normal person who watched the UT defense last year, would realize that Manny has "no chance" to fix the defense. You had:
    1. people playing out of position
    Mychal Thompson.........................kr or wr
    Steve Edmonds.............................de
    2. people who can't tackle
    Adrian Phillips
    Mychal Thompson
    3. people who can't figure out Manny's reverse ferris wheel defense
    which is the whole defense
    4. Malcolm Brown, dt, on the bench most of the year; ditto for Peter
    Jinkins, Tevin...............................................
This talk of Manny fixing it is preposterous.

This cannot be emphasized enough. Everyone loved Manny at this time last year and many were worried about losing him to another team. I don't know whether he will turn it around or not, but he is surely capable of it based upon what I saw in 2011. I think a year of experience, plus the return of Hicks, will do a lot for our LB corps.
