The Day After -- do we know who the Longhorns are?

The Texas Longhorns appeared to grow up a lot in the win over Texas Tech. In looking back at the win, it's possible the victory in Lubbock is a sign of things to come.

  • Let say these two things about this edition of The Day After:

    1. I'm very sorry it's late.

    2. If someone ever tells you they want to drive to Lubbock, please punch them in the face so they'll refrain from making the same mistake I did. LONG drive.

  • Manny Diaz should still be fired. It shouldn't take 9 games to figure out to quit running your front line and Linebackers out of plays.

    Totally ridiculous.

IMO...If we Fire Manny Diaz, one day he will become a Head Coach at a Big XII school and come back and kick our ass....I have said all along to give him one more year to prove himself. I think he has learned his lesson and will change his scheme from now on and will be successful next year. Again, just my humble opinion...

"Don't know. Never had one" -- D. Royal-Mack Brown how to coach a team after a losing season

  • I think the win over Tech and who this Longhorn team is can very easily be defined. The coaches finally quit trying to put square pegs in round holes and let these 4* and 5* recruits play to their strengths. Simply put, we opened up the offense and simplified the defensive schemes and let these athletes do what they have done all there lives.....beat the other guy...one on one! That's how they earned their ratings and that's why Texas recruited them in the first place.

The only time we didn't look good in that game was when the coaches went back to their "play to not lose" conservative attitude in the 3rd quarter.

Take the handcuffs off Ash, run Jonathon Gray off tackle, get the ball to our speed guys and get out of the way! On defense, shelve all the ridiculous stunting that puts guys out of position and let them physically whip the guy in front of them like they did and we'll be fine.

These are the best football players in the state....LET THEM PLAY FOOTBALL....We don't need to re-invent the wheel so some asst. coach can get a HC job. None of these asst. coaches are the Emory Bellard (inventor of the "Wishbone") of the 21st century. It may sound "old school" but our best shot at winning is to line these guys up against anybody and say "my guy is better than your guy", because in most cases they are!

  • Yeah I'm done trying to figure this team out...

Anybody notice that when Manny did get cute, TT was able to make a play? Never understood why Okafor was standing up at times..never worked. He needs to keep his hand on the ground. No reason to get cute against Iowa State...offense or defense

I think there's a lot of truth in what you just said, particularly about the defense.

Consider that the Horns are without 2 of their top 3 defensive players - Jeffcoat and Hicks - and they still held Tech to what they did.

Most successful plays in football, on either side of the ball, end up being broken plays. They are not executed as drawn up with the Xs and Os. That tells me that the best football players are those guys that can react to a situation in the blink of an eye and make a play. You just can't have these guys trying to make 12 different reads on a play and expect them to play football.......block, tackle, run, and throw. While they are trying to get into a "blackboard position" the play has happened and they end up looking like a high school JV player when in reality if the guy just reacted to the play, he would have made the play and knocked somebody's jock off. That's why he was a 5***** recruit. It's the old saying, "Keep it simple, stupid." I hope the Longhorn coaches have learned that from the Tech game.

Then chalk it up to poor coaching. I'm not buying back into the koolaid because we beat Tech - a second tier team. I look at the entire body of work this year and it has been poor when playing good teams (OU, WVU - maybe not so good) and lousy ones (Kansas). I look at the job Gary Patterson is doing with TCU, Snyder at KState, Gundy at OSU and Sumlin at aggieland with a lot less talent and even younger teams (3 of them have true freshman QBs). Seriously, with the talent we have, we are celebrating a win against Tech as the team is maturing, blah, blah. My how the expectations have fallen.

Let's check back in after the last 3 games and see where things are before annointing a turnaround. Seems I remember a similar story by the MODs after the Bowl game last year that led up to a lot of the expectations for the team this year. I know I'll get downvoted, but review all the hype early in the season. The one most ridiculous was the depth at DT. What we have had is just more average players at our disposal and played the one with the most potential (Brown) very little.

A&M has three projected first round picks right now. Two at tackle and one at DE. They have more top-line talent than Texas this year IMO.

Aggies lose the two tackles and Moore and that's a big hit for next year. All of a sudden no one is setting the edge for Manziel's running.

Sherman and the staff he hired were excellent talent evaluators.

I agree with you 100%. I don't think you can consider beating Tech the "break through game of the year". I really think it only serves to prove how inept the coaching had been this year up to that game and when the coaches realized their jobs were on the line, they finally saw nobody was buying what they were selling and started to earn their salaries as the highest paid coach coaching staff in college football......and they still have a long way to go. The sad part of this season is that no matter if this Longhorn team goes 3-0 and beats Iowa St., TCU, and Kansas St., which won't happen, but if it did, there is still that embarrassing loss to OU that will NEVER be forgotten. That alone should cost them their jobs in my opinion, but it won't.

Long flat featureless roads for the last two hours of that drive. I wouldn't do it again on a bet.

  • Jeff -- Stretched that fruit metaphor so far it's laffy taffy. ;)

Agree with what was said about the coaches not out-smarting themselves this game, especially Diaz. Play straight up on defense. Play to your strengths on offense -- meaning, what your strengths ARE, not what you want your strengths to be.

Oh yeah cutting up a green banana to put in my cereal isn't the best thing in the world. I like a dang good banana too.

The metaphor has me picturing the team as a collection of bananas and a guy like Vaccaro wearing a banana suit doing that banana dance lol

I was thinking the same thing, but when I rewatched the game yesterday it looked like more of an option blitz for Edmond. By that, I mean that he seemed to be keying on the RB in the backfield. If the RB left the pocket and headed out to the flat, Edmond would initially rush and then follow the back. If the back stayed in the pocket Edmond would keep coming, but typically with his eye on the RB the entire time.

I agree with you though in that trying to bring him or anyone else up the middle on a blitz seems to rarely work due to all the big bodies inside. Jackson got the sack at KU, but that's the only time I recall a middle blitz working recently

I think you still have to run between the tackles some to keep the opponent's defenses honest. They couldn't run outside on WV or OU. The opponent's defenses will zero in on tendencies. I do somewhat agree that man-on-man matchups is what football comes down to.

Especially when the comparison is made to a first year coach in Sumlin. Also what Muschamp is doing in Gainesville.
I think Tech is a good team, just not great. They have depth deficiencies as has been the MO of the Tech program.
