The Daily 5: Reasons for 10 wins

The way I look at the schedule, I predict that one as an L for the Horns as of right now.

Hypothetical: Can Mack survive another 5 in a row to Stoops? The leader in the clubhouse is that three is very likely, but neither team is senior heavy and is setting up for some epic battles over the next few years. Thoughts?

Fair question IMO. But there are a few games to go before the question becomes valid.

After your prediction on last years game, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

True, but IF OU wins this year, the conversation could be had over some beers and move to coffee if we get #4. Lots of time before that as you said though.

  • OU doesn't look as good as years past to me. Definitely winnable.

Yep. I really think you can tell who is going to win that game by week two of the season. I've said that for years and I continue to believe it to be true.

I totally felt that way last year. With our OL this year and the active DL we will have, I am much more confident about this year than last, even with the WR issues. Solid everywhere but LB depth. If we start to lose LBs, there may be issues. The depth we have is quality and has played, but its a numbers game for me.

  • OU will be favored and even in my mind they should be. However the key thing to me is that they are not overwhelming favorites in that one and a W for the Horns is not going to be a major shock across the nation or anything. I'd say we got a 45% chance in that one. As for the rest, we will get upset somewhere one, if not twice because UT also will not be so much better than the field that we can afford off days and survive against the likes of OleMiss, KState, BU, OSU, TCU or WVa.

45% is pretty generous, but we will see.

Highly doubtful either coach is going to drop 5 in a row anymore. The football program at Texas isn't the same complacent organization that OU (and a lot of other programs) were able to exploit in the early 2000s. Stoops is too good a coach to let a long slip-up happen either.

Also, losing the TX/OU game isn't as catasrophic as it once was. The loser can still put together a BCS-qualifying season (OU played in NCG after losing in '08.)

Stoops and Boren appear to have weaned the Sooner program from its chronic dependency on cheating. And, OU's AD, Joe Castiglione, is now one of the UT athletic department's most trusted and respected allies.
