The 2012 Longhorns: Mike Davis

  • I really hope Davis has recommitted himself to the team and to football. His performance in the bowl game was truly awful.

Reports i got from thr spring were good by and large. He just needs to keep it going this summer and be ready to hit the ground running in the fall.

    I second what Jeff said.

One of the problems for a guy like Davis is there really isn't anybody he can look up to at his position who can be a mentor (Think Jaxon Shipley next offseason.)

Davis is one of those guys who could benefit from a guy he likes and trusts and who has accomplished the type of things Davis should accomplish. The Longhorns just don't have that player at receiver right now.

  • Can Ash develop into a good deep ball passer? If he can, that would be huge for a running team that can go play action and punish mistakes.

Last year, our qb's were awful with throwing a deep ball.

All I can say is I've seen him throw pretty balls in practice. He has the arm to do it.

Yeah, he's got the arm to do it. The question will be if he'll be able to put it on the receiver when he has Big 12 DEs breathing down his neck. If he can the Texas offense has a chance to be a lot better than people expect.

I think he can do it. You could see Ash operating in two modes when he was on the field last year. One looked like his CPU was stuck in a loop and often resulted in late throws, hesitation, bad decisions, int's and the general groaning of 100,000 people in DKR. The other looked like he was just reacting to what he saw, and in those instances he would flash his athleticism while throwing BB's or make plays with his feet. Think of how well he would execute the package plays and pre determined throws from those packages. The kid was money.

I'm not saying that he's going to be dealing like Colt McCoy during the 08 season, but I think he will make major strides this year. Perhaps even be considered outright good by the end of the year. He has all the tools in that he could need to do the job well. He just needs practice and game reps, and tons of them like every other kid.

Put me in the camp of Ash gets it done.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

And being the guy in the offseason should really help in the regard. Let's not forget he spent the entire 2011 summer and fall practice as the clear No. 4, significantly limiting the number of meaningful reps he was able to take in practice.

Having a full offseason as being the No. 1 (or whatever the coaches want to call it) should really help his maturation.

  • I'm not worried about the deep passing game. Even last year we saw that at least the chances were there.

At the very least this passing game needs some consistency to be able to move the chains on third down when the running game isn't an option.
