The 2012 Longhorns: Joe Bergeron

Leading up to the season Hookem.com will spotlight 30 of the most important players on the UT roster. Next up is a guy that surprised everybody with his play in 2011.

  • RB is very interesting. Gray provides the home run threat. I love Brown's vision and I think he is actually being under-rated. I love Bergeron's power. If you could just combine Bergeron and Brown, you would have an absolute beast. I think Bergeron lacks a little vision and it maybe intentional. He seems to seek out contact at times, when it is not necessary. It will be interesting to see if Brown added power and Bergeron settles down a bit.. Definitely one position that is not a worry

  • its amazing that we went from a complete lack of run game, to trying to decide which of our elite running backs is the best.

Yep, add in DajeVu and Mr. Monroe to the mix and Texas is going to have a very, very dangerous running back corp this season. Can. Not. Wait.

  • The running back corp is definitely dangerous.

For me the question is whether the offensive line can start opening up holes against the top competition in 2012, not just the Kansases of the world.

  • How healthy are all the RB's? Any lingering hamstring or toe issues? How about Gray's shoulders?

Alabama or LSU? Maybe not quite yet. But if the OL improves from last year, and if Ash is even competent, we should have a good chance at success up front against all opponents not named OU

This is a valid question. But name me one position on the offensive line that isn't at least slightly improved over last year. Most positions on the o-line are significantly improved (center is really the only ? in my mind...and I'm a big Dom Espinosa fan). Add the improvements in strength and conditioning plus one more year under Coach Searels tutelage and I think the Texas offensive line this year may surprise quite a few defenses. The bigger key is, IMO, whether Texas' passing game can keep opposing defenses from loading the box on every single play.

I agree with you. I just want to see it happen against one of the upper echelon run defenses.

It's kind of like both the teams in the NBA finals. I think everybody would say that both OKC and Miami have the talent of a championship team. But you can't call either of them champions until they win.

Same with Texas. The pieces to be a dominant running team are there, but you don't get called a dominant running team until you do it against the better teams.

Very good observation. I guess the only question I have is if they will improve enough to make a discernable difference.

    I sure hope so.

  • Center will be slightly better, hopefully. If necessary, pieces can be moved around, especially when we are playing a dominant DT.
TE just got considerably better for setting the edge. Big improvement while actually having a modest receiving threat from the position.
Tackle is going to be way better. Cochran is doing a great job, but he should not have been forced (we had no choice) into the LT position. Huge upgrade at both tackle positions. The only concern is depth. Guard will be slightly better but with great depth and no loss in quality when guards rotate.
The line is going to be considerably better in my opinion

Allan, you are wrong in your assessment. Joe will be the top back at UT next year and will threaten long time records when he is done. He is a pro style back like we have not had for too long....

I actually agree completely. I see Bergeron as being the back with the most NFL upside right now. He was a freshman and was obviously the most mature RB we had. He reminds me a little of Ricky. He doesn't have break away speed, but he can move. He can avoid tackles, run people over, shed arm tackles, and score touchdowns. I think we haven't seen the best of Brown OR Bergeron yet. They will only be sophomores... And with Gray coming in, who knows how good the backfield will be.

  • I might be wrong (happens quite a bit) but I'll be shocked if Bergeron threatens longtime records at Texas.

If anything it'll be tough for him to do it with just 463 yards as a freshman. He may very well go on to have a successful NFL career down the line, but I agree about the odds of him being able to break longtime Texas records.
