Looking forward to seeing him get his first real crack at contributing. He and Adrian Phillips are the X-factors of this defense IMO. Two guys who could take this defense from very good to great in 2012.

Great write up. One lingering question for me. Does his neck injury pose any potential long term problems for Cobbs?

To say this guy is huge for Texas in 2012-13 would be an understatement IMO. Pretty much a must to stay healthy.

When all is said and done, he will be one of the 3 most important players on this defense, considering the flexibility of our defense, and the depth behind each position. Who's really behind him, who can do what he does?

Yeah, probably one of the biggest drop-offs between starter and backup talent. There really isn't anybody right now on the roster that would be able to fill that void and not have Texas take a big step back there.

Unfortunately, the answer is probably yes. Its not a given, but the odds are that he ultimately will need a fusion.

He's very important if we want to have a top 3 national defense, but this is still a top 10 unit without him IMO. We have optionality to play 5 DBs and I expect one of Jackson/Thompson to be able to play quality minutes at OLB this year. We would be ok if Cobbs went down again. Obviously, it's a hit to the team, but I don't think it's as drastic as you make it sound.

If Cobbs goes down again, I think you start seeing a lot of nickel defense with a ton of pressure and playing time put on Hicks and Edmonds. as the two linebackers.

Shoulder and neck injuries while playing a position like safety is not unlike a golfer having a bad back...it's certainly not the ideal situation. Hopefully, with a bit of luck this young man can stay healthy this year and therefore be a major piece of what could be an excellent defense! I wish him the best.

You can't say that without knowing exactly what his injury was, and even then a spinal surgeon would only really be guessing. Such uneducated guesses on an internet message board really shouldn't be made.
