Texas vs A&M recruiting

  • Somehow I get emails from Bleacher Report, do not subscribe. They said that Scout, ESPN, and 247 all rank aggie ahead of us in recruiting this year. I know we lost two huge commits recently and saw a big time recruit pick Baylor over us.

With the move of Aggie to the SEC and the hiring of Sumlin, are the aggies going to be more of a force in recruiting? My opinion is yes but would appreciate input from Mods and others. With the possible exception of Luke I am hopeful but not optimistic about any OOS recruits and have no clue how we will end up with in state players.

The LHN is a mess, four teams have bailed from the conference and Dodds is anti any quality team entering the conference, ND being an exception, back to back awful and mediocre seasons could impact us. I hope not but would appreciate thoughts.

  • I think Texas is doing extremely well in recruiting. Texas absolutely would not trade its class for the Aggies.

a&m has like 24 commitments. Texas 14? That explains why they may be ranked higher FOR THE TIME BEING.

    THIS. 24 vs 14.

  • I think you will get a more accurate picture when you look at the individual player ratings. Right now the rankings are skewed because the numbers differ so much. Texas averages 92.07 compared to A&M's 87.38. That's a huge difference. For comparison, USC tops all teams with 94.81 which is unbelievable in itself.
I believe the staff is very happy with this class so far and if Texas can close with Luke, Billings and/or Benenoch and RSJ, it will have a far better class than the Ags.

You do realize that any human being can write an article for Bleacher Report right?

The place is infested with aggy. I guarantee you that there is a "10 reasons aggy will win the SEC in 2012" article somewhere on there.

The place is a joke and isn't worth a single second of your time.

  • They all base their rankings off of total points, so if a team has more commits they generally have more points. I prefer to sort the rankings by average points giving a measure of the quality of recruit that is committing.

As an example 247 has Texas A&M (#10) with 24 Commits and 737 Points and Texas (#11) with 14 Commits and 736 Points. But when sorted by the average Texas jumps to #2 at 92.07 and A&M drops to #20 with an 87.38 avg.

    I prefer quality over quantity.

  • new to this whole recruiting asset of football, but im a stats nerd.

doesn't this mean that class rankings aren't normalized (averaged) in anyway based on the number of recruits ?

ie if texas has less recruits with a higher avg ranking, i would expect their ranking to be higher .. or is that another statistic ?

shouldn't we really care about avg recruit ranking to number of recruits ?

  • I understand the negative comments regarding Bleacher Report. In this case though they gave the rankings of ESPN, Scout and 247, not their opinion.

I misled my reason for the post in the title. My question was with the change in coaches and move to the SEC at a&m, will their recruiting improve. I realize a lot depends on how they do in conference play but the SEC, football wise is considered the premier conference. Also, Sumlin and is offense could bring increased optimism to the program and potential recruits. I hope they fall on their butt and am interested in any thoughts.

I'm probably putting too much emphasis on the recent decommits and Rhodes picking Baylor but it seems we are losing momentum. I'm not trying to be negative, just looking for additional opinions. Just passing time until the season starts.

Well how 247 ranks teams is based on a Gaussian distribution. You can get the full explination by clicking the "i" on the team rankings page. That methodology is a good way of combining the two metrics of avg ranking and number of recruits.

all the sites do a total ranking in their own way.

imo, there's some validity to the quantity aspect - a class w/ 25 4* players is better than a class w/ 10 5* players, for (an extreme) example. that said, i tend to look at avg ranking of the players over any total ranking, regardless of which service.

people take all of the rankings WAY too seriously to begin w/ - it's simply another dong measuring contest so that one fanbase can brag over another.

for a truly "accurate" ranking, you need to average all the different ranking sites. i don't know of a national average, but some of the guys from shaggybevo have done good work on the recruits from texas:
